Students of the Department of Political
Science and Public Administration of the Babcock University,
Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, have called on Nigerians to shun violence while
discharging their civic duties.
They made the call during a sensitisation rally held at their host community in Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.
Clad in colourful T-shirts emblazoned
with the university’s name, the students, amid singing and drumming also
visited Ilishan, Iperu, Ogere, Ikenne and Irolu all in the council
area.
At the various towns, they stopped at
markets, palaces of traditional rulers and motor parks where they
educated residents on the need for peaceful elections.
The students, who had their lecturers and
other workers in their midst, also distributed handbills with the
message, “Say No to Violence, Your Vote is your voice” expressed in both
the English and Yoruba languages.
The President, Public Administration
Students Association, Miss Taiwo Oguntuyo, on one of the occasions, said
it was a way of giving back to the society based on their course of
study.
Oguntuyo added that the move was to bring voter education to the grass roots in the native language.
The Head of Department, Political Science
and Public Administration, Dr. Olajumoke Yacob-Haliso, also noted that
initiative was to educate the grass roots on the need to shun violence.
