PHOTO: Auchi Polytechnic Students In Peaceful Protest

Students of Auchi Polytechnic marched out in their hundreds in a peaceful protest to express their dissatisfaction about the persistent strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) over a number of issues such as unpaid salaries, undue demotion, sack and suspension of some lecturers alleged to be corrupt, and other issues which are yet to be addressed by the government and the polytechnic’s management.

Academic activities in the school have been in perpetual undulation due to the serial strike actions by the union. This has cause a setback for the students who until this moment still have their fate hanged on a limbo.

The academic and administrative atmosphere in the institution is very tense at the moment. Efforts by the Students Union Government (SUG) to bring the lecturers and management to a round table to reach a compromise have proved abortive as the lecturers are more agitated than ever.

Students, in demonstration of their frustrations took to the street in a peaceful demonstration to raise the consciousness of the government to their challenges and frustrations. They carried boards and placards with several inscriptions that signaled to the government their plight. However, their protest caused the blockage of a federal road, shutting down movement for two hours.

The SUG pleads with the government to come to the aid of the students and academic staffs alike because as the saying goes, “when two elephants fight, it is the grasses that suffers”. Students are at the receiving end of the struggle between the lecturers and management.
Also, The constant encroachment of the previous year’s academic calendar into this year, non-mobilisation of students for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the giddy flow of academic activities (to mention a few) in the institution is one too many. The government should intervene with swiftness before the situation degenerates to a barbaric and bestial stage.

YABATECH Short Paying Salary By 25 Percent

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Yaba College of Technology chapter, has accused the management of the institution of short paying staff salary by 25 percent.

ASUP Chairman in the college, Mr. Adeyemi Aromolaran, on Thursday, insisted that the workers would not call off their strike until the full salary is been paid.

The union had on February 10 begun an indefinite strike over non-payment of the balance of January salary by the college management.

Aromolaran said this was not the right time for the management of the institution to deny workers their full salary when the economy was biting hard.

According to him, for about 10 years now, workers’ salary is being paid by both Federal Government and the institution on 75 per cent and 25 per cent ratio, respectively.

He said, “The Federal Government had in January paid 75 percent of the salary while the school management is expected to pay the balance of 25 per cent.

“The balance, which represents various allowances, is yet to be paid by the management.”

He said the allowances were supposed to be paid from the Internally Generated Revenue of the college.

Aromolaran said that the payment of the salary on the ratio of 75:25 by the government and school management had been on for more than eight years.

According to him, the fractional payment policy has been on since the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He also alleged that for more than 10 years, staff salaries and allowances have not been reviewed.

He said, “This is not the right time to deny workers full payment of their salary. The economy is biting harder on the workers, particularly in Lagos State.

“We will not call off the strike until the management pays us our money, all academic activities will remain suspended.”

He recalled that the union had a similar experience in August 2016, but that after a protest, the Minister of Education intervened by directing that the allowance is paid.

“This time around, we will remain on strike until our full salary is paid. The management is trying to play pranks with the union.’’

He said that if it warrants waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to return from vacation, the union would not suspend the strike.

Governor Ajimobi's Aide Arrests Students During School Hours

A patrol team led by Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Community Relations, Abidemi Siyanbade has arrested eight students of secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo state. The students were arrested on Tuesday, for roaming the streets during official school hours.

The students include students of Methodist Grammar School, Bodija; Bishop Onabanjo Memorial Grammar School, Bodija and St Luke Grammar School, Molete.

Siyanbade who stated that the clampdown on students who wandered during school hours would be more regular, listed Community Grammar School, Osungbade and Ibadan Grammar School among schools whose students were notorious for truancy.

The eight students were subsequently taken to Oyo State Social Development Centre, Samonda for counselling.




He added that the parents and principals of the arrested students had also been invited to the Social Development Centre for appropriate counselling.

He also pointed out that the just inaugurated School Governing Boards (SGBs) would also help the resolve to stem acts that constituted indiscipline among students.

“Imagine our students being tagged ‘Olu-Igbo’ because they are always in the bush when others are in class. You can see that the communities support the efforts of the government and I can assure them that we will achieve greater successes from the exercise. We are acting on the directive of Governor Abiola Ajimobi to clampdown on truancy in the state,” Siyanbade said.

19 Arrested Poly Ibadan Students Released

The Students Union Government (SUG), President of The Polytechnic Ibadan, Oluwadamilola Peter Edema and eighteen other students of the institution who were detained at the Oyo State Police Command headquarters, Eleyele Ibadan have been freed.



The students according to the Public Relations Officer of the command, Adekunle Ajisebutu were arrested on Friday for assaulting policemen on duty, breach of public peace and invasion of the command.

But the students claimed that they were at the command to bail two of their colleagues who were wrongly arrested by the police.

President of the SUG, Edema confirmed on Sunday evening that they had been released.

Treasurer of the union, Mariam Anifowose in a telephone conversation with our correspondent also confirmed that all the students detained had been released.

The students, however, did not give details of their ordeal at the detention and the conditions to which they were released.

Daily Post learnt that the impending protest planned for Monday (today) by the students to express their grievances over the arrest of their colleagues propelled the police to release them.

A peaceful but heavy protest by students of Auchi Polytechnic Auchi has brought vehicular movement to an abrupt stop at the ever busy Benin/Abuja express way, a road linking the North and the south.

The students whose grievance was due to the continued strike by the ASUP (Auchi poly chapter) due to an unpaid arrears by the Federal govt, undue demotion, sack and suspension of some lecturers alleged to be corrupt and other factors which the lecturers are pushing on to be met by Management and Federal govt of Nigeria.

Over two months now, academic activities in the school has been epileptic and now, it has been grounded totally following the strike action by lecturers of the institution who are at loggerhead with the management of the school and the Federal govt. over the sack of their colleagues alleged to be corrupt, payment of arrears etc.

Trying to bring both the lecturers and the management of the school to a round table discussion by the SUG body proves abortive as the lecturers are more agitative than ever. And the students who seems to be the most hit by the tussles has now took to the Federal road carrying out a peaceful protest with several inscriptions on their placards, thereby sending signals to the appropriate authorities to come to their aid as the tussles which started since last year after the tenure of the previous Rector has now be full blown, thereby frustrating academic activities and stretching the academic calender of the school.
The protest is peaceful, but the Federal road has been blocked by the students thereby shutting movement for about two hours now.

Last year's academic calender slided into this year due to this same issue and many of the final year students are still yet to be called for service due to late or no registration for the NYSC scheme.

Bida Polytechnic Students Unable To Pay School Fees After Losing Money To MMM

A student of Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State, named Dupe Olurunfemi, was admitted into the school clinic when she heard school fees payment deadline.
She expressed that she invested over Seventy Thousand naira [#70 000] which was meant for her school fees and accommodation in the money doubling scheme, Mavrodi Mundial Moneybox (popularly called MMM) and has been unable to get the money back.



There has been incense and several pleas on social media by students who were affected by the Ponzi scheme after the Ponzi fails to keep its promise to start paying participants by January 14 as earlier announced.
Olorunfemi said: “I joined the platform on November 9, 2016 with N70 000 which I had been saving for months to pay my fees this session. I woke up on December 12, 2016 to get help (GH) only to find out that the GH had been frozen. I had hoped that on January 14, 2017, I will be paid but I am yet to get my money back.”

According to The Nation Newspaper, the deadline for school fees payment of the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State ended on Wednesday, January 25. Majority of the students who lost their tuition fees to Mavrodi Mundial Moneybox (popularly called MMM) are yet to pay their fees.

Another student of the polytechnic, Samson Endurance, an ND II student of Public Administration was expelled from his off-campus hostel accommodation during the night by the landlord because he owed rent. He said he invested his rent in the Ponzi Scheme -MMM.

BREAKING NEWS: Polytechnic Lecturers Begins Nationwide Strike Monday

Polytechnic lecturers, under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), will begin a nationwide one-week warning strike from Monday next week.
Already, the union has directed its members in all public polytechnics across the federation to ensure total compliance.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, President of ASUP, Usman Dutse, said there would be no academic and administrative activity any public polytechnic between 12 noon of 30 January, 2017 and 6 February, 2017.

He said: “The union therefore resolved at the emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC), held on the 25 January 2017 to embark on a one week warning strike effective 12 noon, January 30, 2017 to 6 February 2017 in the first instance.

“Members are therefore directed to ensure total compliance as no academic and administrative activity is expected in any public polytechnic across Nigeria within the period; and await further directives from the union’s organs.”

Comrade Dutse pointed out that the union had on two occasions in July and November last year communicated the decision of its NEC to withdraw the services of its members if a number of issues identified as undermining the sector are not addressed.




Specifically, on 14 November 2016, the correspondence to government conveyed a one month ultimatum to the government on the issues in contention.

Regrettably, the ASUP president stated that despite “the severity of the issues listed, government has not, within the intervening period demonstrated enough passion to address them , leaving the union with no choice especially as we have demonstrated enough patience in deferring the decision since August 2016.”

The issues in contention include the non-implementation of the report of the NEEDS Assessment report which as at July 2014 revealed that public polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria require injection of minimum of N652.6million to address the rot in infrastructure in the sector; sustained poor funding of public polytechnics as shown in the poor but yet unimplemented capital grant to polytechnics and deliberate attempts at frustrating the resolution of the meeting of the Council on Establishment held in July 2016 on the removal of entry level dichotomy against HND holders .

Other issues are victimization of union officials, non-release of union check off dues and interference in union activities; non-release of CONTISS 15 migration arrears; release of visitation panel report of Federal polytechnics and report of Ministerial panels to Federal polytechnics in Auchincloss, Oko’ Yaba and Ado-Ekiti; delay in the review of the Federal Polytechnic Act; non-commencement of renegotiation of the ASUP/government agreement of 2010 and government’s tardiness in the appointment of Rectors of Federal polytechnics.

The National Union of Isoko Students (NUIS), who made the appeal trough its new President, Comrade Innocent Jabin, urged the governor to rename the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, after the late Second Republic senator and South-South leader, Senator Francis Okpozo.

YABATECH Suspends Academic Activities After Fire Outbreak

The management of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), has suspended academic activities until further notice, following the unfortunate fire incident at Bakassi Hotel Wednesday morning.



The inferno which broke out at the wee hours of the day, consumed properties belonging to the female students. It is understood that no life was lost in the incident.

Men from the Fire Service eventually arrived and put out the fire.



However, authorities have decided to put all examinations and lectures on hold.

“By this notice, all examinations and lectures, especially scheduled for today (Wednesday) have been put on hold while the College attends to the exigency,” a statement by Dr. Charles Oni, YABATECH spokesman, said

“The Management regrets the misguided and outright falsehood on the social media and calls to certain radio stations that there was no water on campus to quell the fire.

“The truth is that firemen needed an excavator to attend to the fire, which the College provided promptly.

“Meanwhile, the Rector, Dr. Margaret Ladipo, has called on the College community to remain calm as the Management finds ways to soothe the pains inflicted by the accident.”

PHOTOS: Akwa Ibom Polytechnic Students Protest And Block School Gate Over Hike In Fees

'Students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua today blocked the entrance into the institution in a protest over increase in their school fees.

Year one students are now to pay N82,000 as against N47,500, while students of OND 2 are to cough out N92,000 as against N38,000. Also, in the new fee regime, HND One students are to pay N82,700, with HND 2 paying N85,000.

The protesting students insisted that they will not leave the gate until the management of the polytechnic reversed its decision'

Osun Poly Graduate Screams From Sleep, Dies After Project Defence

Students and staff members of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, have been thrown into grief following the sudden death of a fresh graduate of the institution, Felix Agandi, who died barely four days after he defended his undergraduate project.
One of Agandi’s coursemates told our correspondent on the telephone on Friday that he was dropped at his residence by one of his friends at around 10pm on Monday night.

The coursemate stated that the 27-year-old graduate of Mass Communication was an orphan, who struggled to finance his education from his national diploma days to the time he finished his higher national diploma programme.

The deceased’s neighbours were said to have rushed him to a hospital after he was heard suddenly screaming from his sleep but he was reportedly certified dead right inside the car before he arrived hospital on Tuesday morning.

He said, “We are all in a pensive mood in Iree now because of Felix’s death, who screamed from his sleep and died shortly after that.

“ Felix was a gentle person but jovial. He was humble and hardworking. Despite being an orphan he saw himself through school. His death is an unfortunate one and this week has been one of the saddest ones in recent times in Iree.”

The remains of the Delta State-born student were said to have been buried at Ilesa, Osun State, where he lived with his siblings on the same day.

A lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication, Mr. Tope Abiola, who is also the Public Relations Officer of the institution, confirmed the death of Agandi.

He told our correspondent that the management of the school had visited the deceased’s siblings to commiserate with them.

Abiola said, “The death of the student is still a big shock to everyone of us. We were told that he died in his sleep. He died just some days after he defended his project. There were few corrections made on his project and he was supposed to submit the corrected version when he died.

“He was a cool and hardworking young man. I learnt that he was an orphan but he was focused and determined but unfortunately death snatched him away. May his soul rest in peace.”

Polytechnic Lecturers To Embark On Strike From August 22

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has stated that it will embark on a nationwide strike from August 22,
as a result of the Federal Government refusal to honor its agreement with it.

ASUP President, Mr Usman Dutse, who disclosed this on Thursday at the end of the Zone A emergency meeting of the union in Kaduna State, northwest Nigeria, said the union will commence the industrial action, if the Federal Government fails to honour the agreement it reached with it in 2013.

He said that since the suspension of the protracted strike in 2014, the government is yet to address some of the core issues that necessitated the strike.

Dutse urged the government to as a matter of urgency, address these issues in order to avoid another nationwide industrial action.

A communique read by the Zone A Coordinator of ASUP, Kabir Yunusa, noted that no significant progress has been made by government in resolving the issues.

The statement highlighted the issues to include the non-implementation of Needs Assessment Report of 2014, non-payment of salaries in many state-owned institutions, delay in the review of the Polytechnic Act and poor funding of polytechnics among other demands.

The ASUP President said that despite giving the government enough time when it came on board last year to settle down and address all pending issues, the present administration has showed no concern about the plight of lecturers, whose salaries were being reduced or owed in most federal and state polytechnics.

LASPOTECH Student Attempts Suicide After The Theft Of School Fees

Mr Olaniyan Babatunde ND 2 Accountancy student attempted suicide after his school fees was stolen.

It has always been a life of struggle for Olaniyan, most especially when his father was alleged accused for bribe taken and hence was verbally suspended the same year Olaniyan was born causing things to go from bad to worse for the family.

After doing odd jobs to raise funds for his school fees of N45,000 which was then  stolen in the public transport he entered by a pickpocket causing depression in his heart, leading to attempting suicide. On that fateful day he bought the GO 90 insecticide then wrote a heart-felt note to his parents then drank the entire bottle, he suddendly developed stomach pain, then his housemates rushed in and took him to the to Omoju hospital in Baruwa area of Ipaja, Lagos, where he was revived.

Friends and family members promised to raise the more that was lost, while he was recuperating in the hospital.
