Yabatech Computer Science PT ND Programme 2015/2016 Application Ongoing

College of Technology Yaba Lagos YABATECH Online application for ND part time computer science for the 2015/2016 session at the Epe Campus) is ongoing. Members of the public that are still interested in applying for the programme are hereby informed.

Five (5) credits passes at SSCE/NECO/NABTEB and not more than two sittings in the following compulsory subject in Physics, Mathematics and English plus any two of Statistics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Economics and Biology / Agricultural Science.

PHOTO: Nigerian Secondary School Leaver Makes Breakthrough In Medical Field



…Invents monitor, light concept

Chidi Ohagi from Isuochi in Umunneochi Local Government was like a secondary school leaver the day this reporter met him in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State.
He had invented some products but no one seems to know. Intuitively, he began a tireless search for the Aba office of The Sun, the newspaper he believes would tell the story of his feat in the medical field and show him to the world.
Effusive Ohagi without any scholastic blue blood running in his veins treaded where the most effervescent scholars feared to go.
Out of sheer providence and hard work coupled with dent of positive stubbornness, he tackled the challenges on his way head-on to brace the tape of a trail blazer.
Ohagi attended Isuochi Central School for his primary education before proceeding to Isuochi Secondary School and later to Okija Grammar School in Anambra State for his school certificate examination.
That was Ohagi’s zenith in the wild firmament of formal education. However, what he lacked in paper qualification he has stoically made up in his breathe taking inventions that would take Nigeria out of its technological doldrums and properly place her among the comity of technological nations.
The thinking that Ohagi is just a secondary school leaver, interviewing him on his inventions was fun itself as he with dexterity dazzled technological terminologies oiled in flawless English; which makes one begin to ask if he actually did not see the four walls of the university.
Ohagi first came up with an invention in the medical field he called “Cohagi Intravenous Monitor” (CIM) and later invented a light concept he called “Cohagi Ever Light”. Names of his inventions were taken from his own name, Chidi Ohagi.

Aim of CIM invention
Explaining why he invented the Cohagi Intravenous Monitor, Ohagi said: “The invention seeks to address certain anomalies I observed in hospitals wards where I have been severally admitted. I observed that during the process of infusion certain activity comes up. For example, when the infusion bottles gets empty without the attention of the medics the blood of the patient starts moving up through the line of the infusion administering tube. Medically there is no known hazard associated with this incident but the psychological hazard it might cause prompted me to create this monitor”.
Despite the fact that there was no known hazard associated with blood moving up through the line of the infusion administering tube when the drip water finishes, however, Ohagi said he had witnessed a situation where a patient slapped a nurse for allowing his blood to go up the line.
It was to avoid this that the Abia State-born scientist invented CIM which will help medics monitor the process of the infusion and duly alerts them when it was done.

Other functions of CIM
Besides monitoring the infusion process in a patient, the invention, according the 41-year-old inventor, detects when the line of an infusion vies off from the vein of the patient.
“When blood clots on the tip of the needle the invention identifies it as a line blockage, it acts accordingly. Again, if the patient’s temperature goes higher or lowers than normal the monitor alerts the medics. Most importantly, this monitor aids a weak patient to call for assistance when the patient needs attention.

Evolution of the invention
Although it is on record that most inventors of old and in some cases of present never had formal education, yet it beats one’s imagination that in Nigeria where hard work had gone to the dogs paving way for mad rush for easy money, a young secondary school leaver whose quest for further education was truncated by lack of money came up with an invention that has become a very big challenge to the world.
How was Ohagi despite his limited education able to invent the CIM?
Hear him: “Well, naturally I’m gifted. Also as a child I was extra ordinary, I found myself creating something out of nothing. Although I was not able to study in the higher institution, but later I came in contact with Cleaveman Institute of Electronics, Ohio in United States of America and they offered me admission to study Electronic System Engineering. The institute is not concerned with grades an applicant makes but they solely depend on the interest of the applicant to study Engineering. It was not easy for me to study in the institute due to lack of finance, I could not pay my fees so I dropped out. Later, I joined Radio Netherland because they were running a short technical programme. So, that was how I started.

Idea for this invention
The invention of the CIM was out of necessity. Ohagi told a story of how in 2011 he travelled for the first time to New Delhi, India to make contacts with certain companies that will help him develop his inventions. While there, the inventor whose product is going through some analysis in the United States of America had a growth on his right eye and so decided to visit a hospital in New Delhi for a surgery.
“After the surgery I was in a recovery ward. I opened my eye to see one other patient who was moaning, I discovered that he was going through an infusion process, I didn’t know that his infusion has ended and there was no medic to check on him and the man was frightened as he watched his blood moving up the line. I had to alert the nurses through a button close to my bed so they can check the man. When I was discharged I had to make a research for any equipment that will help alert the medics whenever an infusion process ends. So, when I got back to my hotel, I thought about that invention, so I visited the biggest electronics market in New Delhi to pick up equipment I needed to create this monitor”.

Components for CIM, its guarantee
He said many components were involved in putting together the CIM which is fully digitalized and took him four years to develop.
Ohagi, however, said that one of the primary components he used was load sensor which he said cannot be found in Nigeria.
He assured that CIM was a durable concept which guarantee is based on the user’s ability to handle carefully without crashing it.

Appeal
Despite this noble feat, CIM is yet to be mass produced because of financial constraints, making him to appeal to both his state and Federal governments to give him financial assistance for the mass production of the product which cost he put at about N153 million.

Cohagi Everlight
Also on Ohagi’s invention menu is a light concept he called, “Cohagi Everlight”. According to Ohagi, “Ever light as the name goes implies that there should be light always. In our society, one of the things that bring development is power. It is a device that produces light. When there is power outage the Cohagi Ever light automatically comes on and starts to supply light to any environment it is brought into”.

5 Inventions By Kids

Who says kids can't be innovative? these five inventions were all dreamt and actualized by kids.
1. Braille: Braille is a writing system for blind and visually impaired people. Its a system that consists of small raised dots that can be read with the sense of touch.
This life-changing invention was created by 15 year old Louis Braille in 1824, who lost his sight in an accident. With this writing system, the blind can read books and even computer screens.

2. The Calculator: At the age of 18, Blaise Pascal invented the first Mechanical Calculator named Pascaline. Though not initially accepted because it was believed it would make people become lazy, it was later made commercially available 200 years after its design.

3. Ice Pop: This was an invention 'by accident'. In 1905, 11 year old Frank Epperson left a mixing stick in a glass of powdered soda and water. Due to the cold temperature that night, he woke up to find a frozen pop, which he initially called 'Episcle'. After patenting 'Popcicle' in 1923, it has gone on to be a Kid's delight.

4. The Trampoline: This gymnastic apparatus which has been incorporated into the olympics was invented by George Nissen in 1935 alongside his gymnastic coach. It is now also used in flight and Astronaut training and of course. . . for recreational purposes.

5. Ear Muffs: This simple but ear-warming piece was invented by 15-year old Chester Greenwood. The idea came to him after he got tired of having cold ears while ice-skating in his area. He made a wire loop and requested his grandmom to sew fur (soft hair from some animals) on its ends. He kept working on the model and finally obtained patent rights in the 1870s. This piece of device was used to keep the US soldiers' ears warm during the World War.

Nigerian Scientist Presents Ebola Vaccine In France

A Nigerian vaccinologist, Simon Agwale, has presented a report of an experimental vaccine for the dreaded Ebola virus disease to a scientific conference in France.

In a statement, Yuri Nakamoto, on behalf of the scientific committee of the conference organised by the Pasteur Institute, Paris, said the report was one of the items discussed at the two-day conference.

The International Conference Targeting Ebola had more than 300 delegates from 42 countries in attendance, Mr. Nakamoto said in the statement.

He said that the agenda of the conference included 140 oral, short and posters communications, latest developments in the Ebola outbreak in Africa, and latest clinical developments.

Others were latest innovations, vaccines and drugs to combat Ebola, and prevention of Ebola contamination and transmission, to be published by the committee.

“Agwale, alongside Epie E. and Pushko P. of Innovative Biotech Ltd, Keffi, Nasarawa State, and Innovative Biotech USA Inc, made a presentation on ‘Construction and Evaluation of a Highly Immunogenic EBOLA Influenza VLP Vaccine Candidate’.

“They prepared and evaluated EBOV VLPs that included GP of EBOV Zaire strain in which VLPs were expressed using recombinant baculovirus in Sf9 cells.

He quoted the researchers as saying that they had developed and evaluated an EBOV candidate vaccine that was highly immunogenic in mice.

“Given the immediate need for an Ebola vaccine and the efficiency, safety and adaptability of our VLP platform technology, we are confident in producing a high yield, high quality product using the most cost effective methodologies available, they said.

The researchers said that the vaccine approach could be used for mass vaccination in Africa to prevent EBOV infections and future epidemics of the deadly disease.

They announced that they were also using their platform technology to develop vaccines against HIV, malaria and other diseases that plaque Africa.

16 Nigerian Inventors You Should Know About

This list comprises of 16 Nigerian inventors who have contributed to development in various fields worldwide.

1. Saheed Adepoju



He is the inventor of the INYE-1 & 2, tablet computers designed for the African market.



Bio: Saheed is the Co-founder of Encipher Limited, a Nigerian-based technology company that introduced the first android-powered tablet into Nigeria. The INYE-1, which was unveiled in April 2010 is a 7-inch resistive screen tablet. It runs android 2.1 and allows users to connect to the internet using its inbuilt WIFI card and to use an external 3G modem from GSM networks. It offers about 3 hours of battery life and allows HDMI output to HDMI capable devices.
INYE-2, which was unveiled in May 2011, is an 8-inch capacitive screen tablet. It runs Android 2.2 and allows users to connect to the internet using its inbuilt Wi-Fi card as well as its inbuilt SIM. It offers about 8 hours of battery life and allow users to connect to other USB devices.


2. Seyi Oyesola



He is credited with the co-invention of CompactOR or the “Hospital in a Box”, a solar-powered life-saving operating room which can be transported to remote areas of Africa and set up within minutes.

Bio: Seyi is a Nigerian trained doctor and inventor. He received his basic science and medical education at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, with specialist training in Anaesthesia and Critical Care in the United Kingdom and United States. In order to help bring surgical care to every region of the continent, Seyi co-developed CompactOR, or the “Hospital in a Box”: a portable medical system that contains anesthetic and surgical equipment. One major advantage of this invention is that the operating suite is light enough to be dropped into inaccessible zones by helicopter and it can be powered by solar panels.

3. Jelani Aliyu



He is credited with designing General Motors’ leading auto brand, Chevrolet Volt.

Bio: Jelani was born in Kaduna State, Nigeria in 1966. He originates from Sokoto State, Nigeria and earned an associate degree in Architecture from Birnin Kebbi Polytechnic in 1988. Upon graduation from the Polytechnic, Jelani worked at the Ministry of Works, Sokoto before pursuing additional education in the United states. He graduated in 1994 with a degree in Automobile Design from the College for Creative Studies, Detroit, Michigan and was hired by General Motors.

4. Ndubuisi Ekekwe



He is credited with the development of microchips used in minimally invasive surgical robots

Bio: Ndubuisi is the founder of First Atlantic Semiconductors & Microelectronics Ltd. He holds a U.S. Patent on a microchip used in minimally invasive surgical robotsand was part of the team that created XL sensor inside the iPhone and iPad.

5. Col. Oviemo Ovadje (Rtd)

Oviemo is a Nigerian medical Doctor who is credited with the invention of the Emergency Auto Transfusion System (EAT-SET), which is an effective, low-cost and affordable blood auto-transfusion mechanism that saves patients in developing countries. He has patented the invention in nine (9) countries.

Bio: Oviemo was born in Nigeria and hails from Delta State. He began working on the invention in 1989 with $120 dollars. In 1995, he was declared best African scientist and founded EATSET Industries, in April 2001. The United Nation Development Program (UNDP) and the government of Nigeria funded the EAT-SET Project, with the World Health Organization (WHO) acting as the executing agency and providing assistance in the coordination of the project.
He has received many international awards including:
*.OAU-WIPO Best African Scientist Gold Medal, Geneva Switzerland (1995);
*.Winner Promex Medal Geneva, Switzerland (1998);
*.First African Winner World Health Organisation Sasakawa Gold Medal, Geneva, Switzerland, (2000);
*.Winner ARCO Gold Medal, The Dorchester, UK, (2001);
*.Winner Army Council Medal, Nigeria Army, Army Head Quarters, Abuja, Nigeria.

6. Cyprian Emeka Uzoh


Credits: He holds more than 126 United States issued patents and over 160 patents worldwide in semiconductor technology including U.S. Patent No. 6709562,“method of making electroplated interconnection structures on integrated circuit chips”, which earned him the inventor of the year award in 2006 from the New York Intellectual Property Association.

7. Kunle Olukotun
He is well known for leading the Stanford Hydra research project which developed one of the first chip multiprocessors with support for thread-level speculation (TLS).



Bio: Kunle is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from The University of Michigan. He is the founder of Afara Websystems (later acquired by Sun Microsystems), a company that builds servers surrounding a custom high-throughput CPU architecture and develops IP traffic management systems for high-throughput, low power server systems with chip multiprocessor technology.

8. Sebastine Chinonye Omeh

He is best known for his research into the use of wind-propelled turbines to generate electricity.

Bio: Sebastine is the Managing Director of Hybrid Micro Machine Products Limited. He is from Ogrute town in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. He is a graduate of engineering from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Challenged by the energy crisis in Nigeria, and the need to develop indigenous technology he conducted research into the use of wind-propelled turbines to generate electricity, thereby pioneering wind energy technology in Nigeria.


9. Shehu Saleh Balami



He is credited with designing a solid-fuel rocket.

Bio: Since year 2000, Shehu Balami, a Nigerian Engineer has been involved in designing rockets. He is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Niger State. He has produced two solid fuel rockets which were launched along the new Kaduna Millennium City Road in Kaduna State. In 2008, with the support of his friends and family members, he was able to build his first rocket which he later modified in 2011. The solid-fuel rocket was produced under the auspices of the Movement for the Propagation of Science and Technology in Nigeria.


10. Yemi Adesokan

He was selected by expert judges of the Technology Review of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States of America for his discovery work on drug-resistant infections. He was honored by the MIT in 2011 because of his innovative work.



Bio: Yemi is a Nigerian born and United States-based founder of Pathogenica Inc. Medical experts are of the view that his innovation may bring an end to the problem of drug resistance in the world particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. His discovery work was carried out by a biotechnology start-up that he founded with Professor George Churchof Harvard Medical School DNA technology.

11. Ume Ifeanyi Charles

Bio: Ifeanyi is a professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia. He is a recipient of the Donald P. Eckman Education Award in recognition of his contributions towards education of mechatronics throughout the world. In 2010, he was also awarded the Electronics and Photonic Packaging Division (EPPD) Excellence in Mechanics Award.

Bio: Aloysius holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Boston Massachusetts. He is the Founder & Chief Scientist of BREEJ Technologies, Inc., a developer and marketer of advanced treatment cosmetics products for problem skin. 


13.Mohammed Bah Abbah



Although he holds no patent on this invention, he is credited with taking on the challenge of making accessible the “pot-in-pot refrigerator” or “zeer”, a refrigerating device that does not use electricity, to people in rural areas. He is a recipient of the Rolex Award for Enterprise, an award that provided $75,000 which Mohammed used to produce and distribute his invention in 11 northern states in Nigeria.

Bio: Mohammed developed his pot-in-pot refrigerator by combining the knowledge he had gained from his grandmother’s craft of traditional pottery with simple laws of physics. He followed up on the idea by placing food in a small pot, which is then placed in a larger pot. The space between the two is filled with moist sand and a wet cloth cover is used to cover the whole set up. As the water in the moist sand evaporates through the larger pot, it carries heat away from the inner core of the whole set up.
Mohammed holds no patent on this invention because the pot making business is not new. What is novel is the fact that he set up a local production facilities to provide the pot-in-pot for the cost of $2 (N320) for the smaller pot-in-pot refrigerator and $4 (N640) for the bigger versions. The invention allows perishable food to extend their spoilage rate. For example, meat can be stored in it for up to two weeks instead of a few hours.


14. Olu Atanda

He is credited with the co-invention of a self-lubricating layer for a data-storage device and disk and holds the following patents at the USPTO.

15. Brino Gilbert

He is credited with the invention of the Counter Collision Gadget (CCG), a device that has the capacity to prevent accidents on the road, air, sea and rail. The invention earned him many awards including a bronze medal in the Aerospace/Aeronautics category at the May 2003 edition of the Invention and New Product Exposition (INPEX) in the United States. He also received a silver medal in the manufacturing category and a trophy for being the best invention from Africa in the continental category

Bio: Gilbert is a Nigerian physicist from Edo State. He spent 10 years seeking government attention for his research and approached several groups and individuals for sponsorship. His vision is to make CCG exportable to many countries of the world.


16. Emeka Nchekwube



He is credited with the co-invention of the following:

Bio: Emeka Nchewube is a Nigerian-born Neurosurgeon who currently lives and practices in the United States. He was born in Lagos, Nigeria and earned his Bachelors degree in chemistry from Central Michigan University. He attended Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit where he also finished his Neurosurgery residency. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He is also a member of the San Jose Surgical Society, the American Medical Association, and the California Association of Neurological Surgeons.
