Educationist tasks pupils on hard work

The Chairman, Atlantic Hall Educational Trust Council, Chief Morenikeji Okunowo, has counselled pupils not to expect special favours from the society but rely on hard work and perseverance to get ahead in life.
BACK TO SCHOOL: Pupils of Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary School, Ojodu, Lagos on resumption... on Monday.
Okunowo was speaking at the 23rd valedictory and graduation ceremony of the Atlantic Hall, Poka-Epe, Lagos, penultimate Friday.

“Each one of you has been endowed with talents to contribute positively to the growth and development of our dear country and the world at large. You must however note that success is one of those rare gifts in life that is never given but always earned through hard work, perseverance, honesty and commitment. Do not bury your talents and do not let life pass you by. Make it count by putting to good and productive use your God-given talents,’’ she said.

In his remarks, the principal, Mr. Andrew Jedras, urged the graduating pupils to be disciplined and ready to take on challenges if they desire to be successful.

“Our graduates of today will certainly be required to be even more disciplined towards their future learning, technology will be at the heart of most things, research will be a norm, interpretation a must, risk-taking and entrepreneurialism will be essential and permeating these will be creativity and vision. Such will be the complexity to be successful,’’ he said.

However, the cynosure of all eyes was Kanyinsola Sagoe, who emerged the valedictorian.

According to the Vice- Principal, Academics, Mr. John Olagunju, Sagoe had always received a merit certificate and the principal’s award for excellence.

“He is an all-rounder. By the time he got to Junior Secondary School 3, he had difficulty choosing his discipline. He distinguished himself in sports and broke a tendon at the last inter-house sports competition. As a result, he missed three weeks of school. But on resumption, he covered all he missed in one hour. He is the kind of pupils we are breeding with multiple competencies,’’ he said.

Sagoe, 17, who aspires to be a software engineer, has already been given admission to study at the Clifton College, Bristol, United Kingdom. He however urged the federal government to reform the education system.
