Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) has announced to set up a global institute in Rome in the next fall. It aims to provide 15 new global study program in 2016.
As an effort to provide opportunities to study abroad for the undergraduates from the United States, the programs are duly approved and recommended by the Academic Consortium Board (ACB) of CIEE.
This initiative comes after much deliberation upon the issues a student face while undertaking an international education. The imminent barriers such as cost, curriculum and culture shock are some of the priority areas CIEE wishes to breakdown. It’s an innovative open campus program allows the students to engage in meaningful and fully customized educational experience abroad.
James P. Pellow, President and CEO, CIEE, said “CIEE is committed to breaking through the barriers that keep too many students from studying abroad. That’s why we’re developing flexible, high-quality, and affordable international academic programs that will provide more access for students from all socioeconomic backgrounds and academic majors. We’re pleased to able to extend our affordable and flexible Open Campus model into Rome to give our students access to one of the world’s most historic and culturally relevant cities.” CIEE is also set to open global institutes in Berlin and London. Currently, it operates its international program in Farrara in northern Italy.
CIEE shall provide a flexible learning option in which students can study in both Berlin and London together by using a 12 week block–six week in each city.
This will be a pilot program and will be introduced next spring. A total of 14 new study abroad programs were approved in 10 cities which includes Buenos Aires, Moscow, Taipei, and Rabat.
Currently, the number of study abroad programs stands at 220 with CIEE operating in 43 countries that includes 61 study centres. The newly inducted programs were approved by the ACB in its annual meeting.
Apart from the study global program, CIEE and Academic Internship Council (AIC) shall provide internship opportunities in cities such as Berlin, Germany, Cape Town, South Africa, and Santiago. The goal is to enable students to gain work experience in the real world setting in the places of business operations and innovations. The internships shall be customized as per the need of the students which will give them a competitive advantage in the global field. There are total 10 international cities where AIC provides internship opportunities to the undergraduates.
Last year AIC merged with CIEE with a vision to increase the opportunities for the students in the area of global education and experience. The demand for high-quality internship programs is widely prevalent considering the emerging interdisciplinary world. Therefore, creating a comprehensive portfolio of internships serves the purpose.
CIEE was established in 1947 as a non-profit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization in the United States of America. It undertakes 35,000 international student exchanges per year. Whereas, AIC facilitates customized internship programs for the students. It has 30 universities as partners.
