Anambra State University Shuts Down Indefinitely After Graduate Was Tortured To Death

Last week, it was all over the media that a spillover student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, formerly Anambra State University was tortured to death by the school’s anti-cult for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.

Unlike what was widely reported, the late victim, Ndirika Michael was a graduate of Mechanical Engineering, who came back for clearance.

According to different students of the University I interviewed, the student was said to be a cultist during his days at ANSU, and the Anti-cult have been looking for him for so long.

When they heard that he is around, they captured him and he died while being tortured by them.

The late victim never stole a phone, he even uses an iphone 6.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Fidelis Okafor however, said that the student wasn’t killed by the Anti-cult, but he was killed by rival cult groups, that he died when the Anti-cult came to rescue him.

this further angered the students, especially cult boys, who used the leverage that one of their own has been killed, to destroy properties worth millions of naira.

The vice Chancellor later gave a directive that the school be shut down indefinitely.

Citations for mugwump
I was very anxious to keep him in his place, but at first I could not think of any way to help him, for I was a mugwump. We, the mugwumps, a little company made up of the unenslaved of both parties, the very best men to be found in the two great parties--that was our idea of it--voted sixty thousand strong for Mr. Cleveland in New York and elected him. Mark Twain, "Chapters from My Autobiography.--VII," North American Review, December 7, 1906
Dewey's problem will be to corral the great and growing army of independents and "mugwumps." Mugwumps are those conscientious citizens like the anti-Blaine Republicans of 1884 who, by leaving their party, frequently decide elections. , "Nominee Dewey," Life, July 10, 1944

Kogi State University Strike Clocks 7 Weeks, Massive Exodus Of Lecturers

Im just curiously wondering why some of us are keeping quiet even with the nonsensical ongoing industrial action by ASUU, Kogi State University chapter (ksu), even when when the govt. is incommunicado about what she has decided to do.

What has changed, really? I rooted for Yahaya Bello' because of Wada' helpless cluelessness. Now, it seems de ja vu is taking a turn on us.

First, they told us the state was broke due to irregular or reduced monthly allocation from the FG. We were advised to pray and hope on bailout fund which would be used to clear all salary debts immediately.

They said screening would be conducted, that of the lecturers have been long completed.

The incumbent Governor announced that he received the bailout on the 18th of May, 2016.

I would like to ask? Why are we not talking even in the face of no explanation? Why are those who called Wada unprintable names now cowing in quiet?

With one ear, I heard the Governor even said the strike was politicised by the Kogi State University VC to witch-hunt his administration because he is Ebira, relaxing on the logic that Wada was an Igala man and the Igala VC never went on strike with his lecturers when he was in power, forgetting that the same VC has been providing soft loans for the lecturers to cushion the effect of the inconsistent menstrual pain called salary.

It is also on record that the Students Union Government (SUG), in recent weeks embarked on many Ajala visits to the Glass House in attempts to pacify the Governor to roll the salary backlogs, however many described those efforts as fruitless as no exact person can give an informed position on when the lecturers would be paid.

The warts in my heart is to learn daily that Kogi State University, which was the best State citadel of knowledge during the FS Idachaba' VC regime, and the dream of many lecturers in other institutions has in recent time witnessed brain drain. Informal quarters have placed the number of lecturers in massive exodus from the university to other institutions to be above fourty (40).

A student of the institution, Mr, Ali Abbah also reported earlier that the Governor had dissolved the School's Governing Council, which without that, results cannot be approved for NYSC mobilisation for graduated students.

It is also worthy to note that under this Yahaya Bello' regime, no one seems to know what anyone is about to do. For every sensitive administration, communication between government and the governed is key to the success of that administration.

It is painful that students should be the grass of any elephant and government war. We cannot take this anymore. Our future is been held hostage to what we don't even understand.

Please, as a concerned Kogite, I don't care who becomes the governor, if he likes, he can be an Igbo man, but let him provide us quality leadership. It is insensitive for the state governor not to give priority to what drives the excellence of his state (Education).

The painful pill to swallow is to know that 20BN bailout fund is now at the coffers of thestate government and she is yet to anything while the institution' lecturers seek greener pastures elsewhere.

It seems anything APC is now actually insensitive to the plight of those she governs. They have subjected the fate of the students to political expediency. Enough is enough! Something has to be done this week or they'll be massive revolt from the students.

Please share this post until His Excellency, Gov. Yahaya Bello and his Media team sees this to explain what is going on. We are tired of speculations.

University Of Ibadan To Hold ‘PTA’ Meeting Over School Closure

The University of Ibadan (UI) will be holding a parent and stakeholders forum to resolve the crisis, which led to the closure of the university, a few weeks ago.

The meeting titled “University of Ibadan parents/stakeholders’ forum” is scheduled to hold at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, on Tuesday, 7 June, 2016, at 11am.

In a statement signed by Olujimi Olukoya, registrar of the University, parents are urged to attend the meeting without their wards, as students are not yet allowed on campus.

“Following the recent development that led to students being advised to vacate the campus, the Management, Senate and Council of the University of Ibadan, have at various levels been deliberating on ways to address this problem with a view to finding lasting solution and ensuring resumption as soon as possible,” the statement read.

“Parents and other stakeholders in the UI project are cordially invited to this forum… we specially covet your presence and valuable input at this important meeting.

“Kindly note that students are yet to be recalled and as such should still stay away from the campus. Thank you for your support at all times.”

Students have taken to social media to describe the meeting as a Parents, Teachers Association (PTA) meeting, reminiscent of their primary and secondary school days.

Ayantola Alanyande, the Students’ Union public relations officer (PRO), in another statement, urged students to remain calm and resolute in their demands for justice and basic amenities.

“While we await the decision of the University on Mote’s case, electricity and water supply, and resumption date, we have our fingers crossed and keep undying strategies to ensure that our victory is certain,” the statement read in part

“Once again, disregard any post launching attacks on the Union leadership and throwing such divisive darts in the minds of students.

“Like the Vice Chancellor of the University himself said yesterday ‘tough time never lasts, but tough people do’, we remain committed and undiscouraged in this struggle. This is a moment of social change and it comes with both loyalty and betrayal.

Bayelsa Varsity Students Protest Indefinite Closure Of School

Some students of the Bayelsa State-owned Niger Delta University, Amassoma, on Saturday, took to the streets to protest the indefinite closure of the university.

The lecturers of the institution, had on April 28, 2016, proceeded on an indefinite strike, following the inability of the state Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, to pay backlog of workers’ salaries.

As of the time the lecturers commenced their strike, the state government was owing the lecturers and non-lecturers of the NDU four months salary arrears as they have not been paid since January 2016.

The students, under the aegis of the Niger Delta Visionary Movement, also criticised other students’ bodies such as the Student Union Government of NDU, National Union of Bayelsa State Students and the National Union of Izon-Ebe Students, describing them as puppets.

The aggrieved students in a statement by the spokesman,, NDVM, Mr. Wisdom Adike, threatened to march Unclad with their books and block the entrance to Government House if after a week the stakeholders failed to settle their rift and open the university.

Adike said, “We wish to bring to the notice of the general public, that the strike embarked upon by the ASUU, NDU chapter, on April 26, 2016, over nonpayment of salaries, have led to the shutdown of the institution for over one month now.

“This development has continued to give parents and students great concern.

“Niger Delta University being the only state owned university is a legacy institution established by the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha who was recently laid to rest. The institution has not only helped in meeting the manpower needs of the state but the entire Niger Delta region and beyond.

“However, we wish to express our displeasure over the lingering strike and government’s attitude towards resolving the situation. The strike has increased hardship, made students to sit idle at home and lose focus on their academic pursuit, as well prolong their academic programmes, thereby causing youth restiveness and society unrest.”

He wondered why all the students’ bodies kept quiet over the plight of students, a pealing to the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide to intervene and ensure immediate reopening of the school.

He added, “We also call on the Ijaw Youths Council to stand up, break their silence and defend the legacy of the Ijaw nation by ensuring the immediate reopening of Niger Delta University. This is because now is the time to protect our common heritage.

“We are also using this medium to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in his magnanimity and benevolence in salvaging the state from the current economic crunch and hardship as parents and guardians especially in the local governments of the state have not received salaries for over 12 months, despite the release of bailout funds by the Federal Government.

“Finally, we want to urge all students to remain calm and embrace as all available non-violence means will be utilized to end this strike and return to school.”

rape-victm
“A bill for an Act to make provision for the Prohibition of Sexual Harassment of students by educators in Tertiary Educational institutions and for other related matters, 2016 “, Omo-Agege submitted.

Widening the scope of bill beyond educational institutions, Senator Biodun Olujimi maintained that it was not only in tertiary institutions that the trend happens, canvassing that it should be anywhere at all.
Senator Dino Melaye, however differed, stressing that female students having dressed offensively also harass their lecturers by offering to sleep with them.

“Mr President of the Senate, Distinguished Colleagues, we should also take cognizance of the fact that female students dress offensively, thereby tempting lecturers who could not resist themselves, ” Melaye noted.

He added that every educational institutions should have a dress code and insist on students observing it.

After contributions from other Senators in favour of the bill, Senate President, Bukola Saraki in his remark noted that the bill was a response to the menace in educational system, stressing that it was right time the Senate rises to the occasion. Today's Quote And Fact

Today's Quote

The world is hard and cruel. We are here none knows why, and we go none knows whither. We must be very humble. We must see the beauty of quietness. We must go through life so inconspicuously that Fate does not notice us.

"I Donated $900,000 Not $14 Million To US University" - Muhammadu Indimi

The chairman of Oriental Energy Resources, Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, has denied media reports that he donated US$14 million to Lynn University in the United States. Rather, the amount he donated, according to him, was $900,000. In a statement sent to THISDAY editorial Board Chairman, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, to protest the piece, “The Prodigal Billionaire”, published in his column of 25th May, 2016, an official of Oriental stated that neither Indimi nor the company donated the figure being credited to him and for which he was being vilified.

The company also listed Universities of Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Nsukka among institutions of higher learning in Nigeria to which Indimi and his company had extended considerable financial support running into billions of Naira in recent years. Below is the full text of the statement from Oriental, endorsed by its chairman, Indimi: “Following recent online, and media coverage of a donation made by our Chairman, Dr Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, we find it necessary to provide clarity on the nature of the relationship with Lynn University, and Oriental’s operations in and commitment to the Niger Delta. “Contrary to reports circulating, neither Oriental, nor our Chairman, donated US$14 million to Lynn University. This figure is unsubstantiated, inaccurate and misleading.

The figure jointly donated by Oriental and former partner, Afren Plc, to Lynn University, a University from which Dr. Indimi and nine of his children have received nine Bachelors, five Masters, and one Doctorate degree, is $900,000. “Oriental Energy is a proud indigenous oil company with a steadfast commitment to investing positively and purposefully in the communities where we have operations and beyond.

Oriental is particularly committed to fostering and supporting the development of education and indigenous technical skills, as a fundamental pillar for long term sustainable development. We understand that without adequate investment in the education of the youth, there will be no sustainable economic growth. “This is why the organisation has, over a four-year period, contributed billions of Naira to the communities where we operate in Nigeria.

These donations include scholarships to beneficiaries from the Universities of Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Nsukka, amongst others, the development of University Of Port Harcourt’s digital library, the re-habilitation of the University of Uyo’s Petroleum Institute, infrastructure development in our host communities” as well as donations towards support for Internally Displaced People in the North East of Nigeria, and victims of terrorism. “Oriental Energy Resources will continue to protect its reputation and reiterate its commitment to the Nigerian community particularly in instances like this where journalistic due diligence would have disproved the unsubstantiated rumors.”

Nigerian Student Attacked With Iron Rod In India Over Parking Spot

India's foreign ministry says it is looking into an alleged attack on a Nigerian student by a local man in the southern city of Hyderabad.

Police said 26-year-old Bamilola Kazim was allegedly assaulted by Mohammed Gafoor after a row on Wednesday

Mr Kazim was treated for wounds at a local hospital and released.

Last week a student from the Democratic Republic of Congo was beaten to death by a group of Indian men after an argument in Delhi.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the killing of the Congolese man.
Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted on Friday that Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj "had urgently sought report" on Wednesday's incident from the local government "and is monitoring the case".

Police said Mr Kazim allegedly parked his car in front of Mr Gafoor's house, and was attacked with an iron rod by the latter after an altercation.

Hyderabad police officer K Srinivas told BBC Hindi's Imran Qureshi that the two men had "reached some understanding" after Mr Gafoor was arrested and released on bail.
Gideon Omodowale of the local Nigerian Students Association said it was a "small issue".
"He [Mr Gafoor] has apologised and we have also forgiven him. It happens," he told the BBC.

There are more than 4,000 students from African countries in Hyderabad.

Following last week's killing of an African student in Delhi, a group of African embassies had said they did not want to participate in Africa Day celebrations on Thursday because of repeated attacks on African students in India.

They relented after Ms Swaraj promised to ensure the safety of African students in India.
Mr Swarup said the Indian government had received news from its embassy in Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo, that some "Indian establishments and shops were attacked on 23 and 25 May as a reaction perhaps to the killing of the Congolese national" in Delhi.

"It has been reported that by Wednesday, things have calmed down," Mr Swarup was quoted as saying by The Hindu newspaper.

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have not yet commented on the remarks.
In February, a Tanzanian student was assaulted and partially stripped by a mob in the southern city of Bangalore.

Photo Of A Stranded Abuja Corper Sleeping On A Pedestrian Bridge In Kubwa

It was just like an horror scene from a scary movie, stumbling on a body snoring away on a pedestrian bridge few metres away from Kubwa Garage.

As if that was not enough, the snoring fellow was gorgeously cladded in the highly revered NYSC outfit. Upon waking him up, the horror story he narrated will exhaust several pages.

Is it not unfathomable that fresh graduate of one of Nigeria's Ivory Tower has been rendered homeless in the course of serving his fatherland? To further add salt to his injury, he was outrightly rejected by the government parastatal he was posted to for no concrete reason.

To further exacerbate his predicament, the unfortunate young Nigerian graduate is battling with pneumonia . This is to serve as a wake up call to our policy makers to holistically review the NYSC Acts. Also, as a short term solution, we hereby call upon every well meaning Nigerian to come to the aid of Abuja corp members before the untold stress impinged on innocent corps members exceeds yield point.

PHOTO: Girl Who Just Wrote WAEC Electrocuted In Lagos After High Tension Fell On Her

The sickening positioning of the high tension over a residential house is what baffles me. On Saturday 21st May 2016, 14-year-old Deborah Faleke was instantly killed after one of the high tension cables that ran above their compound at Fagbeyiro Street in the Alakuko area of Lagos State fell and electrocuted her, NGLatest has learnt.

Deborah had concluded sitting for her WAESCCE only weeks ago.

Her father, Pastor Ademola Faleke said:

“On Friday, I went out of Lagos State for a ministration. So, the girl went to stay with her eldest sister on Fagbeyiro Street. That was not her first time.

“I was at Iyana-Ipaja on Saturday on my way back when I was called on the telephone and told about the incident. There was no rainfall. Deborah was not sent on any errand. She was just passing through the gate when the wire fell on her. The marks on her body showed that the wire fell on her head.

“She was rushed to a hospital. The workers there said they did not have adequate equipment. So she was rushed to a second private hospital on Adegbola Street, where she later died. The doctor issued a death certificate to us.

“She just finished secondary school; she was also my interpreter. She was very active in church. I want the electricity distribution company to at least show some concern. My daughter, who is my joy, has been taken away by a careless electrical connection.”

20 Quotes To Inspire Teamwork At Work

The difference between success and
failure is a great team. Here’s how to
inspire yours.

When I first became a planner and a
manager in the spring of 2010. I was
doing it as a joke to keep myself busy. I
make my own hours, determine what I
wanted to achieve and avoid pretending i
know alot. But as i grow consistently in it
I began to exhibit many strange attributes never taught in recent times.
Ultimately, it creates some route I would never have
journeyed. After several years of practice
I learned that the only way to build a company / organisation with great success and scale is to build a great team. No matter how smart, talented, driven, or
passionate you are, your success as an
entrepreneur or HOD depends on your
ability to build and inspire a team. A
successful leader is one who can spur his
or her team members to work well
together toward a common vision and goals.

To inspire your team members, you’ll
have to talk to them, of course. I hate
meetings, but I love short (seven to 20-minute) huddles to align and motivate the team, distribute roles and
quickly achieve result. One effective way
to begin or end a huddle is by sharing a
quote. I love quotes.

Below are 20 quotes I believe will inspire
you from well-known coaches, athletes,
business leaders, and authors that will
compel you and your team members to
work well together:
1. “Talent wins games, but teamwork and
intelligence win championships.” –
Michael Jordan
2. “Teamwork is the ability to work
together toward a common vision. The
ability to direct individual
accomplishments toward organizational
objectives. It is the fuel that allows
common people to attain uncommon
results.” –Andrew Carnegie
3. “Alone we can do so little, together we
can do so much.” –Helen Keller
4. “I invite everyone to choose
forgiveness rather than division,
teamwork over personal ambition.” –
Jean-Francois Cope
5. “None of us is as smart as all of us.” –
Ken Blanchard
6. “Coming together is a beginning.
Keeping together is progress. Working
together is success.” –Henry Ford
7. “If everyone is moving forward
together, then success takes care of
itself.” –Henry Ford
8. “The strength of the team is each
individual member. The strength of each
member is the team.” –Phil Jackson
9. “Collaboration allows teachers to
capture each other’s fund of collective
intelligence.” –Mike Schmoker
10. “It takes two flints to make a fire.” –
Louisa May Alcott
11. “Unity is strength. . . when there is
teamwork and collaboration, wonderful
things can be achieved.” –Mattie
Stepanek
12. “To me, teamwork is the beauty of
our sport, where you have five acting as
one. You become selfless.” –Mike
Krzyzewski
13. “The best teamwork comes from men
who are working independently toward
one goal in unison.” –James Cash Penney
14. Without a team it is virtually
impossible to achieve OUTSTANDING
SUCCESS- AOCviews
15. “A team is more than a collection of
people. It is a process of give and take.”
Barbara Glacel & Emile Robert Jr.
