The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU in the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) are now divided as controversies continue over the selection and consequent announcement of a new vice chancellor for the university.
The division follows a recent statement by the chairman of the union in the university, Dr Caleb Aborisade, allegedly declaring the support of ASUU for the process leading to the announcement of a new vice chancellor for the university.
The pronouncement by Dr Caleb Aborisade, allegedly stating that the selection process for the new vice chancellor for the university was free, fair, and credible drew the anger of some members of the union.
They gathered under the umbrella of ‘Concerned ASUU Members’ stating that the chairman of the union did not state the position of ASUU in the university.
However, the chairman of ASUU of the university, Dr. Aborisade, when contacted declined to speak on camera stating that the union could not have taken a stand on the legality or otherwise of the process as none of the aggrieved candidates has approached it with their grievances.
Meanwhile, members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have continued their protests against the selection process and the consequent announcement of Professor Ayobami Salami as the new Vice Chancellor of the institution.
They called on the Federal Government to set up a panel of inquiry to look into allegation of fund mismanagement by the outgoing vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Bamitale Omole.
The tenure of the incumbent Vice Chancellor of the institution, ends on June 23.
