Nigerians perception of Maiduguri wrong – Students

The perception of some Nigerians outside Maiduguri that the place is a ghost town is wrong.

The final year students of the Department of Mass Communication of the University of Maiduguri said this Wednesday when they visited Media Trust headquarters in Abuja on an excursion.

One of the students, Jude Moses Melea, said life was going on in the town despite the se
curity challenge.

Melea revealed that the security challenge had been reduced drastically with the help of security personnel.
A student, Mahmud Adewole Muizdeen, said it had not been easy studying in an environment engulfed in insurgency but added that the University is one of the safest places in the town.

The leader of the delegation and a lecturer in the department, Dr Nuhu Gapsiso, said the situation in the town is calm now unlike before when there was relative tension among students.

He said the negative perceptions people outside Maiduguri have about the town is informed by media reports.

“The media can do more to inform people that people live there. Normal life is going on despite the activities of the insurgents,” he said.
The students were conducted round the newspaper company including the printing press, the newsrooms, and other departments. They also spoke on their interest in the journalism profession.
