The Nigerian government has upgraded the Imo State College of Health Sciences and Technology in south-east Nigeria, with a provisional accreditation to be among tertiary institutions to be regulated by the National Board for Technical Education.
The news of the upgrade of the institution located in Amaigbo, Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State to a polytechnic was celebrated by the provost of the college Dr. Ngozi Duru, staff and students.
Dr. Duru said with the new development, students of the college after graduation could now participate in the National Youth Service Corps scheme and that any admission into the school would no longer be an internal arrangement but regulated by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board.
The Imo State College of Health Sciences and Technology was founded in 1983 by the State government to serve as an institute of higher learning for health and technology workers.
But ever since then, it has never been recognised as a tertiary institution or higher college of learning, as its activities were never regulated by the National Board for Technical Education.
Move to ensure that the school is recognised and accredited by the National Board for Technical Education started some years ago after the Okorocha-led administration took over office in 201.
Few days ago, the much awaited result of the visiting accreditation panel from the National Board for Technical Education came, with a news of a provincial upgrade as a polytechnic.
Some staff and students of the college expressed delight over the new status of the college which they said would go a long way to aid the development of education in the state.
With this new status, the Imo State College of Health Sciences and technology Amaigbo can now enjoy some benefits which their counterparts in other tertiary institutions enjoy.
