20-year-old Tumi Ayileka Defiles pregnant corper

rape
Men of the Ondo State Police Command have apprehended a 20-year-old suspected rapist, Tumi Ayileka, who allegedly raped a two-month old pregnant National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member at Imoru in Ose local government area of the state.

Ayileka, who claimed to be an Okada rider in the community, was among the 27 suspected criminals paraded by the State Commissioner of Police, Isaac Eke during his monthly press conference held in Akure, the State Capital yesterday.
‎Eke informed that the rape victim (name withheld) boarded a motorcycle from Ifon to Imoru where she was posted to by the NYSC.

He narrated that the suspected rapist allegedly dragged her into the bush and forcefully had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.
Confessing to the crime, Ayileka admitted that he raped the young youth corps member unknowingly.
He said it was his first time of committing the crime , saying he even still drove the victim home after the act had been carried out.
According to him, “she approached me around 7.p.m at Ifon that I should take her to Imoru community where she serves and I obliged after agreeing on N500 charges fee. On our away going, I don’t know the spirit that fell on me and I don’t know when I rode her inside the bush and have carnal knowledge of her.
“Immediately after that incident, the spirit went off and I was ashamed of myself. I didn’t know she was pregnant before and I even took her home. Later on, she reported to the Police station and I was arrested. I don’t know the spirit that fell on me because I have never done that before”.
The Police Commissioner assured that the suspect would soon be charged to court as soon as the judiciary workers end their industrial strike.

‘Education is a collective responsibility’

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala, has called on Nigerians to see education as a collective responsibility rather than a sole obligation of the government.
Nwaobiala said this at a convention to address improved access to quality secondary education and other marginalised youth in Lagos.
The programme was organised by the Results for Development Institute and the Education Partnership Centre under the auspices of the Partnership to Strengthen Innovation and Practice in Secondary Education.
Nwaobiala, who was one of the speakers at the recent convention, added that adopting approaches that strengthen the government and private sector collaboration would also help improve the education system greatly.
The Managing Director, TEP Centre, Dr. Modupe Adefeso-Olateju noted that well designed and strategic public-private partnerships could address challenges, which affect access, quality and equity in the country’s education.
However, the Team Leader, Human Development, DFID Nigeria, Ms. Kemi Williams, stated that the solution to removing barriers requires a comprehensive understanding of the barriers and a holistic approach to addressing them.
The convention was part of efforts to improve innovation and practice in secondary education in the country.
The technical sessions focused on sharing knowledge on monitoring and evaluation, translating research into policy, strengthening the design of secondary education research, scaling projects and engaging policymakers.
A board member of R4D and Chairman, Hygiea Nigeria, Mrs. Fola Laoye, said that for the country to be competitive in a global economy there is need to return to a merit-driven system.
She commended PSIPSE grant recipients for their commitment to designing and implementing innovative secondary education projects.

Deaf association urges Jonathan to sign disability bill

President Goodluck Jonathan
As a condition to support his re-election bid, a coalition of deaf teachers has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to sign the disability bill into law.
The National Assembly passed the bill last year.

The coalition, comprising the Nigeria Deaf Teachers Association, Nigerian National Association of the Deaf, Deaf Voices Coalition and the Lagos State Association of the Deaf, made the appeal in Lagos on Thursday.
The Executive Secretary, DVC, Adewale Adeyanju, who spoke on behalf of the coalition, noted that Nigerians living with disabilities constituted an important electoral population with their numerical strength.
According to him, the bill, when passed into law, is capable of ameliorating the challenges faced by the community in the country.

He said, “Our deafness is cheating us because there is no law protecting us. Other countries, even among developing nations have signed the Disability Bill, which has made their countries more habitable and friendly for persons living with disabilities.

“While appreciating the several initiatives the PWDs have benefited from this tenure, like mass employment into Federal Civil Service of many graduates living with disabilities and others, we strongly request that the bill be signed into law. Nothing other than this will make us happier and we are always ready to support your second-term bid. The six-week extension given by INEC will soon be over. These six weeks can break the record of your six years’ service or tenure if well utilised.”

Adeyanju said the bill would mark, “a turning point in the lives of millions of Nigerians and offer a chance to enhance Nigeria’s economy through the inclusion of people with disabilities, while also upholding Nigeria’s obligation under international law.’’

He also decried the “social ostracisation” of the deaf by the society and the political class, saying it took some time before information on the election postponement got to the deaf community.
The President, Deaf Women Association of Nigeria, Mrs. Adedoyin Beyioku-Alase, urged the wife of the president, Patience, to help facilitate the signing of the bill.

She added, “We are only paying lip-service to the issue of inclusion. Where is the inclusion? Now is the time to sign the bill and include all Nigerians living with disabilities. When I go to the polling station, I will cast my vote the same way as hearing persons. But where is the inclusiveness? We are mothers, wives and we have homes. Our voices must count,’’ she declared.

I won’t sack teachers – Orji

Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State has assured teachers of their job security.
Abia State Governor Theodore Orji
Orji, who gave the assurance a meeting with heads of public primary schools in the state, said that although one would be tempted to downsize teachers in view of teacher-to-pupils ratio, he would not sack anybody.
Public primary and secondary school teachers recently called off their three-week-old strike over salary arrears as the government paid two out of the three months arrears.

He appealed to them to exercise patience with the government, noting that there were efforts to clear their outstanding salary arrears.

According to him, the slump in oil price has affected adversely the revenue base of the state.

Orji regretted that some teachers derived pleasure in scandalising the government instead of reciprocating its gestures to enhance their welfare, considering the recent promotion in the state.

He said, “We are determined to pay you all the debts we owe you but you don’t encourage us. Some of you scandalise and demoralise the government.

However, as our revenues improve everyone will smile.”

He expressed optimism that his successor would continue from where he stopped to improve the lots of teachers in the state.

The governorship candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, promised to enhance the welfare of teachers.

According to him, Orji has laid the foundation for regular payment of teachers’ salaries and promised to consolidate on it if elected.

Ikpeazu also promised not sack them provided they were improving in their services.
He said, “Experts recommended right sizing because of the percentage of funds going into salary payment but we will not sack you. You will keep your jobs but you will have to work hard and improve your output.”

JAMB 2015: 6 Mentalities Candidates Must Possess to Scale Through

Image result for jamb
It is really funny how so many people can become successful failures when it comes to examinations. Some people virtually fail every exam they have ever written in their lives.

Back in the 90’s, I used to have a friend who literally wrote and failed JAMB 9 (nine) times, and believe me it was not funny then. I mean it got to a point where JAMB officials took good notice of him (as a regular customer) and they started sending him
seasonal greeting cards every Xmas (believe it or
leave it!).

Writing 6 mentalities to have before writing JAMB
exams is something of great interest to me. In my
15 years of partaking in various examinations, I
have come to realize that there is a big difference
between your state of mind and your IQ. Your
intelligence becomes very useful when you are in
a stable state of mind, but when the human mind
goes gaga, and there is no external hard disk or
back up around the examination room...

Firstly before dreaming of becoming a student of any tertiary institution in Nigeria is to have a good self esteem. Do not judge me wrongly here.

I am not going to tell you to read until we discover another source of electricity from your brains.

I already assume your parents, uncles, aunties and even your oga’s and madams ‘at the top’ have lectured (or should I say bored you) on that already.

I am just here to fix your brain to fit into an examination environment. So what is self esteem? Mind you it is not about dressing like P-Square or Wiz-Kid, or looking prettier than Omotola. It is all about how you see your self (very important!).

It might amaze you that majority of people who think that they cannot pass an examination actually end up not passing that exam. If you stand in front of a mirror and tell your self that you are ugly, then JAMB paper will have the courage to tell you worse( believe
me). So from today, as you study for your up coming examinations, start whispering sweet things to your self, network with sound minded people who also share your goals and belief.

Number 2 : Never get intimidated by what other
are studying or reading. Very funny right? My first
experience as a JAMB candidate was very intimidating. I once entered a JAMB class thinking I have read enough only to discover that I was still a learner. The questions two girls were throwing at on another made me wonder if it was the same JAMB I was about to write. If not for God, I was already imagining the type of bike that would be very suitable for my new found okada
business in my imagination world.

In practice, be a master of the few you have studied, learn them very well and if you want to add to your
knowledge, feel free to join other study groups
you might find, be part of them and never feel
intimidated. After all you might discover that you
know more than them.

Number 3 : Do not think negative about others.
Girls this one mostly applies to you people. Just
like self esteem, what you think of others greatly
affects you directly or indirectly, sub-consciously
or even consciously. You might not know this,
but all the time you spend gossiping, jealousy
and holding grudges against your friend, makes
your friend even better than you. This state of
mind makes your studying process more difficult
and painful. So free up your mind before you pick
up a book today and most importantly do not
keep malice with friends.

Number 4 : Overcome Fear! Just like intimidation, fear has a way of getting back at us. No matter what you read, that fear in you will always tell you that you will fail. Let me break it down for you like this: F-False, E-Evidence, A-Appearing, R- Real. False Evidence Appearing Real. Overcoming examination fears can be achieved through
studying with more confident students for that
particular examination. Studying with close
friends may also help overcome fear over time.

Number 5 : Choose a strategy! A strategy is a
means you want to use and achieve your goals.
Since your goal is to pass JAMB and get
admission into a university or polytechnic, you
have to decide on a good strategy to adopt. If
you are a good listener, you might try listening
more often from your friends in group
discussions. Like-wise, if you are a slow learner,
you might as well try reading and attempting past
questions to allow it stick faster to your brains.
Choosing a strategy you are comfortable with will
not only make you pass exams, but it will boost
confidence and reduce fear in you. So which
examination strategy are adopting for you March
exams?

Number 6 : Bring in the God factor. If you have
read to this point and you do not have a place in
your heart for God, I rather suggest you walk
round your area and look for a hug-able
transformer, so that we will understand what M.I
meant in his song ‘beef’. So in essence, fear and
love God. Pray before you study and before your
exams, and every other success factor will be
easier for you to apply.

Stakeholders React to Minimum Teaching Qualification

Image result for nigeria teachers
Following the announcement of plans by federal government to make first degree the minimum teaching qualification in Nigeria, stakeholders in the education sector has reacted to the news with mixed feelings.
In his submission, the Deputy Director Academic, Distance Learning Centre, University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Oyesoji Aremu, said that if Nigeria wants to be at par with global challenges, then the country should raise the bar of teaching qualification entry.

Aremu, who based his argument on the premise that in most private primary schools in Nigeria, university degree holders are the ones teaching said, “Nigeria cannot pretend as if all is well with the education sector.”
Asked what the future holds for NCE holders, Prof. Aremu said that this is not the first time we are migrating from one academic teaching qualification to another.

Also, finding nothing wrong with making bachelor’s degree the minimum teaching qualification in the country is the Zonal Coordinator, Lagos Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Adesola Nasir, who said the quality of the end products is what matters.

Meanwhile, Professor Ladipo Adamolekun, an independent scholar and a professor of public administration is calling on the Federal Government to carry out an in-depth research and assessment of the Colleges of Education before such decision can be implemented.

He said that instead of making such announcement public, government should rather meet with the Provosts of Colleges of Education to know the challenges they face.
