JAMB Reopens Portal For UTME Registration For Just 48 Hours

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board has caved in to protests that it had prevented many candidates to register for the forthcoming 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), by shutting down its online registration portal.

Although the body had dismissed the protest as wrong-headed, in a statement today, it said it is giving a 48-hour extension for applicants to complete registration process.

JAMB will reopen its website between 12 midnight on Tuesday and 12 midnight on Thursday to allow applicants complete their registration process for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

But the fresh grace, the Board stated, will only be for applicants who were unable to complete the registration process as of Friday, 5 February, when the registration closed and not those who want to begin a fresh registration process.

The reopening of the portal, it said will enable applicants who have initiated the process of registration for the 2016 UTME but couldn’t upload and complete the process, noting that the grace would not cover applicants who want to start fresh registration process.

According to spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, “the directive doesn’t cover fresh registration but only those who had either done offline registration or visited our website but could not submit.”

“The Board wishes to state that all arrangements for the 2016 UTME has been completed and examination will commence as earlier stated,” the statement added, urging candidates to print their examination slips for the schedules of their date, venue, time allotted to them and other necessary information.

JAMB Reacts To Candidates’ Protest Over Closing Of Portal

The attention of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been drawn to protests by some alleged prospective candidates in Edo and Lagos states over the closure of the board’s registration portal in preparation to the UTME.

In a statement signed by the Head, Media and Information of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, the board stated;

“The board sincerely sympathises with the plight of these prospective candidates.

“It is indeed the wish of the board that the Nigerian youth desirous of tertiary education are given ample opportunity to register for its examination.

Professor Dibu Ojerinde JAMB Registrar

“This is why it began the sale of its application document in August 2015, which is about seven months ago.

“In the advertisement for the sale of the registration documents, the board clearly stated that the sales would close by January.

“But due to public appeal it extended the registration process to February,” the statement read in part.
The board further stated that it could not allow candidates to register perpetually, adding that it had a time table and it adheres strictly to it.

It noted that this was to allow tertiary institutions to begin admission processes early.
“We all must work to enshrine the culture of discipline in the system and ensure that tertiary institutions calendars are not truncated.

“It is most unfortunate that some candidates waited until our website was withdrawn before making attempts to register,” the board stated.

It noted that every aspiring candidate was expected to know the procedure as proper publicity involving the media was done. (NAN)

PHOTO: Meet The 26-Year-Old Nigerian PhD Holder From University Of Pretoria

At 26, Romola Adeola, a Nigerian, is the youngest PhD holder from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She talks to
MOTUNRAYO JOEL on her feats

Kindly introduce yourself.
My name is Romola Adeola. I was born in March 1989. I’m from Lagos State, Ikorodu local government precisely. I’m the only female child of my parents.

Where did you have your primary, secondary, and tertiary education?
Most of my formative education was in Lagos, Nigeria. For my tertiary education, I attended Lagos State University where I finished in 2009 and then proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in Abuja; I was called to the Bar in 2010.

Did you obtain your masters in Nigeria?
No, following my National Youth Service in 2011, I proceeded for my Masters in Law at the University of Pretoria in South Africa in 2012.

Why did you decide to travel to South Africa for your PhD?
I decided to do my PhD in law in South Africa due to the expertise of the research institution.

Is there any special reason why you choose the University of Pretoria and not any other university in Nigeria?
I chose the University of Pretoria because it has a research institute within the Faculty of Law that has both the reputation and expertise in the field of doctoral studies that I sought to pursue.

What is your area of specialisation?
My research was on development-induced displacement within the African regional context. The research was in the field of international law cutting across development studies, rights, investment and political economy.

Describe the whole experience studying for your PhD?
Studying for the PhD in law was interesting, challenging and worthwhile. It’s like embarking on a journey with a roadmap with several routes that you would need to learn to navigate as you proceed. But I must say that it’s a lot easier travelling on that journey with God’s guidance.

What was your thesis on?
My thesis titled, “Development-induced displacement in Africa: Striking a balance between the imperative of development and the rights of persons likely to be displaced,” was supervised by the Director of the Centre for Human Rights, Prof. Frans Viljoen.
In my thesis, I analysed the obligation in article 10 of the African Union Convention in relation to the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa. Her study, said to be one of the first on the African Union Convention, focused specifically on development-induced displacement which is one of the root causes of internal displacement in Africa.

What are your winning streaks?
I would attribute my success to God and my supportive parents who place a high premium on hard work and personal development. My parents were instrumental to my success in the programme through their consistent support and encouragement. Further, I must say that I have been privileged to have great teachers, mentors and relatives who were supportive.

You are currently the youngest PhD holder from the university; how do you feel?
I’m grateful to God for the opportunity.

Some ladies of your age have their minds focused on work, relationships and other things, why did you decide to study for a PhD?
Everyone is different. We all run the race of life differently and our priorities are set based on our needs at every given point in time. Following the conclusion of my Master’s programme, I felt a strong desire to further my studies and have a PhD. Since work and marriage were not key priorities, I had the luxury of time to engage in my pursuit.

How did your South African colleagues in the institution react to your achievement?
They were impressed, stunned and challenged. The reactions were diverse. On my part, I’m grateful to God.

What is your plan for society?
I plan on being of service to humanity by impacting knowledge and mentoring others who seek to achieve similar feat.

Would you be moving back to Nigeria any time soon?
That’s a good question. I’d always come home whenever the occasion demands.

Compare the education system in Nigeria with that of South Africa, what is different?
The education system in Nigeria teaches resilience and in many ways, it prepared me for the intensity of my postgraduate studies abroad. Yes, there are challenges with respect to infrastructure in our country, but I’m optimistic that the government and the education sector will fix these challenges.

What are your hobbies?
I love to play lawn tennis and read a good book. The book could be a fictional novel, an autobiography, a motivational book or a nice travelogue. There is always mental space for widening one’s horizon. Whenever I get the chance, I play scrabble and chess.

What other awards did you win at the University of Pretoria?
During my Masters, I was awarded a prize for the Best Dissertation in the LLM programme and Best performance in one of the core modules. I also received the Dean’s Prize for the Best Essay on the LLM journey.

Did you ever think you would emerge the youngest PhD student?
I really didn’t think of it initially. When I started the PhD, my priority was to complete the programme in time for graduation. However, towards the end of the programme, my age began to attract some attention with regards to a record being set. At first, I wasn’t conscious about it, but I’m grateful to God that it happened.

Did you have time for social activities?
I was guided by the saying that there is time for everything. There is time to study, there’s time to play and so on. The PhD programme was a time to study as such; I barely had time for social frivolities.

Where you social media-friendly during the programme?
Hardly and it was a personal decision. I guess there are people who can multi-task and be on social media sites while studying but I chose to reduce my activities on social media partly because I wanted to fully concentrate on my research. However, my advice to anyone thinking about it would be— do what works for you; know yourself and manage your time.

Did you have mentors at the institution?
Yes, I did. One of my mentors was my research supervisor, Professor Frans Viljoen. His penchant for hard-work and his sharp insights on issues relating to law, politics and development were critical to my research.

How many hours did you study for?
I did it full time and as such, it was my main pre-occupation.

How do your parents feel about your achievement?
They are grateful to God.

Do you have any regrets in life?
I don’t believe in harbouring regrets because I believe it’s like clicking on the rewind button of life which is ever moving forward. My advice to anyone harbouring regrets is, sink the past into oblivion and move on. It’s never too late to make something out of life, you only have to be determined enough to forget the past and move forward.

What would be your advice for anyone who wants to achieve similar feat?
My advice would be commit your plans to God, be diligent, stay focused and choose your companions wisely. With these few principles, combined with some others, one is bound to excel.

Dollar Scarcity: Parents Of Overseas Students Weep In Banks

As dollar scarcity worsens in Nigeria, parents who have children aken their frustrations to banks, with some of them weeping openly, as Saturday PUNCH observed.

Investigations by our correspondents revealed that the frustrations by some parents who cannot access forex to send to their children abroad have brought out their emotional sides, while affected students have been crying out for help in foreign lands.

When one of our correspondents visited some banks along Muritala Muhammed Way, Unity Road and Taiwo Road in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Wednesday and Thursday, some bank customers, who were there to buy dollars, expressed disappointments at the scarcity of the currency.

One of the customers, Alhaja Salamatu Ajibola, who practically broke down in tears, lamented that the education of her two children schooling in the United States had been threatened by the development.

She added that her children had been going without food due to her inability to send them money for their upkeep.

Ajibola said that it had been difficult for her to send her children dollars for their personal and educational needs. She said she had visited one of the banks several times, hoping to send dollars to her children, only to be told that the currency was insufficient to meet customers’ demands.

Another tearful parent, who spoke to Saturday PUNCH on the condition of anonymity, in a first generation bank in Bauchi State, said it had become impossible for him to meet the financial needs of his children schooling abroad.

She said she was seeking other ways of sending money abroad due to the difficulty she was facing in getting dollars to send to her children.

“Our children abroad are crying and we parents are also crying,” she said.

“They are confused and we are also confused because we can’t send money to them and they can’t receive. They are in misery, hunger and depression.

“They can’t even feed well because they can’t get money for their upkeep.”

She, therefore, called on the government to “create an escape route so that children will not continue to suffer.”

Also, Mr. Jimoh Abdulganiyu, whose son is studying medicine in Ukraine, said he could not get dollars, even at the black market, to send to him.

Abdulganiyu said his son was given a warning letter by the school authorities over delay in payment of accommodation fees and he risks being asked to vacate the dormitory soon.

He expressed fears of the possibility of buying fake dollars because of the pressure of getting dollars, which has been pushing parents to the parallel market.

He said, “Sometimes, I would get to the bank by 6.40am, before the official opening hour, to stand a good chance of getting dollars through the Western Union or Money Gram.

“And this does not mean that I would automatically get the dollars, I still have to lobby before I could get it. Even at that, there is a limit to the amount I can get.”

One of our correspondents, who visited two commercial banks in the Sabo, Yaba area of Lagos on Thursday, observed that there were no dollars for sale. Sabo is a black market hub for forex activities in Lagos.

There, a 65-year-old man, Mr. Obafemi Solomon, who also expressed frustration with the situation, struggled to fight back tears as he narrated his ordeal.

Solomon said he was indebted to some of his friends in the United States, where his daughter was schooling.

Solomon said his friends had had to bail him out of the financial problem because he felt it was unwise to exchange naira for dollars at the present exchange rate.

He said, “What I am doing right now is to beg my friends who are in the US to help me pay for my daughter’s tuition. It does not make any sense to change naira for dollars and send to her. There is even no dollar to buy.”

A pensioner, Mr. Olu Ajibade, who resides in Ekiti, also shared his plight, saying things had not been this tough in the past four years that his son had been in Middlesex University, London.

Calling for the liberalisation of the foreign exchange market, Ajibade said, “Now we rely on the black market and the forex rate is very high. If you don’t go to them then you are left to face the bank and they have so many rules you have to oblige to before you can get money from them.

“You will have to fill so many forms, get a letter from the school and go through so many rigorous processes. With that, it is not even guaranteed that you would get money from them. Honestly, it is not easy at all. Unfortunately, there are no other alternatives. The black market that could have been an alternative is not properly funded. The truth is that if you want to buy £3,000 in the black market, they tell you that they don’t have more than £800. For instance, we needed to pay school fees of about £10,000 but all we could do was pay half because of the scarcity of foreign currency.”

A Nigerian student studying in a US university, Adebayo Kabiru, told Saturday PUNCH that he would have gone bankrupt if not for the menial jobs he was doing.

In a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, Kabiru said, “My parents have not been able to send me money since January. At a point, I got frustrated, but I had to do something. So now, I do some menial jobs to pay for my upkeep.”

Also, a student studying in Russia, who spoke with Saturday PUNCH, said she was about to be deported because her visa had expired and her parents could not send her money to renew it.

She said, “My father has been trying to send me money for the past two weeks for me to settle my visa problem and other things, but has been unable to do so. I am about to be deported and when that happens, I will lose the opportunity of rounding off my last session here in Russia.”

Simon Uwem, a student studying for his Master’s degree at a university in Indiana, US, revealed that Nigerian students abroad have been having rough times.

He said, “I have been able to survive because I have a research position in school and I get paid very well. I was hired by the school for the job. The truth is that if you are intelligent, you will survive.

“But it has been so tough for some students here. Asking your parents for $1,000 means they need to look for N400,000. Some students don’t even get to hear from their parents any longer. They have resorted to doing menial jobs or marrying Akata (American citizens) here.

“A professor recently spoke to me about getting more foreign students from Africa and I told him that finance had become a challenge even if such students get scholarships. A textbook here costs up to $200. It has been quite tough.”

Today's Quote And Fact

Today's Quote

“I advise you to stop sharing your dreams with people who try to hold you back, even if they're your parents. Because, if you're the kind of person who senses there's something out there for you beyond whatever it is you're expected to do - if you want to be EXTRA-ordinary- you will not get there by hanging around a bunch of people who tell you you're not extraordinary. Instead, you will probably
become as ordinary as they expect you to be.”

UNILAG Students To Sue School Authority For Changing Their Courses

Some medical students of the University of Lagos, Akoka,
who were given courses contrary to their choices, have threatened to take the institution to court if it fails to reverse its decision within seven days, starting from Wednesday, February 17.

They said they had petitioned the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahman Bello, the Federal Ministry of Education, the Senate Committee on Education, the National Universities Commission, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, among others, on the development, saying they wanted
favourable response before the ultimatum elapsed.

The students had reportedly met the pass mark set by UNILAG for them to move to 200 level, but most of them
were not admitted into the College of Medicine in Idi-Araba on the grounds that the quota given to the school was not sufficient.

Some of the students and their parents on Thursday protested against the development at PUNCH Place on the
Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, displaying placards, some of which read, “JAMB, NUC, please save our future, save our career, save our destiny, come to our aid,” “This scam must stop, we want our courses at the college of medicine”, “Prof. Rahman Bello, you are a Pharaoh, allow our children to cross to the promised college.”

The petition, which was signed by the principal solicitor for the aggrieved students, Jiti Ogunye, read in part, “We are solicitors to the students of the Faculty of Sciences in the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos State.

“By their performances in their first year course work and examinations, they met the requirements by having a
Cumulative Grade Point Average or cumulative score average of 50 in the groupings of courses for the Medicine
and Surgery, Medical Laboratory, Nursing, and Physiotherapy departments; and a 2.00 CGPA for students in Pharmacology, Physiology and Radiography departments to advance to 200 level and first year in the UNILAG College of Medicine.”

The petition stated further that the school had raised the requirements from 50 per cent and 2.0 CGPA to between 2.5 and 4.11 CGPA after the students had met the initial standards.

“We demand that the university rescind its decision by allowing our clients to register for the various medical programmes in the College of Medicine and commence attendance of classes. If the university fails or refuses to accede to our demand within seven days of the delivery of
this letter, we shall not hesitate to initiate a legal action against the University of Lagos in the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, for the judicial review of the administrative action.”

One of the students, Emmanuel Adebiyi, who wanted to study medicine, said he could not settle for pharmacology, which he was given by the school. He said, “I got 56, 58 and 72 in the three required courses, but I could not advance to 200 level to further my education as a medical student. We are being denied our rights. We appealed to the President to look into this. I was given Pharmacology, which I did not bargain for.”

A Medical Laboratory student, Samuel Sodipe, said he was eventually offered Botany, “which I don’t like.”

Evelyn Ajisafe said the decision of the school had caused “disorientation” of the affected students, adding that they
could not study what they did not apply for.

“At the end of my 100 level, I had 3.9 CGPA, which is above the 2.00 required by the school. I had already bought some materials for the college of medicine. But when the list came out, 19 out of 49 students were selected. I was among those that met the requirements, but not shortlisted. The university said there was a specific quota which we were not told about from the beginning. I want the school authorities to give us our normal courses. We are psychologically disturbed.”

One of the parents, who gave his name simply as Otunba Afolabi, said the claim by the VC that the affected students failed “is a blatant lie.”

“I have been having sleepless nights since this issue started. The school is trying to destroy the destiny of these children. I wanted my daughter to study Agriculture, but she insisted
that she wanted nursing. She tried her best and met the criteria – she had 60, 53 and 58. She had been receiving
lectures when the list came out and her name was not there,” he added.

The UNILAG spokesperson, Toyin Adebule, could not be reached for comment as his line rang out. A text message sent to his mobile phone had yet to be replied to as of time of filing this report.

'Students, Not My In-Law Attacked ABUAD' – Afe Babalola

The authorities of the Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti have debunked claims by a parent that a cult group recruited from a polytechnic by a sister-in-law to the ABUAD Founder and Chancellor, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), carried out the February 7 riot in the institution.

The authorities said the claim by the parent was “false, malicious, deliberate and intended to damage the world reputation the university has built in its six years of existence.”

In a statement made available to The PUNCH, the legal luminary expressed surprise at the claims despite its earlier information made available on the riot.

He said, “The information supplied by the parent ran contrary to the position of the university as well as that of the parents that the February 7, 2016 riot by about 200 students out of a population of over 6,000 students was caused and orchestrated by students with poor academic performance.

“It is apposite to say that the university has a name and reputation which it has built over the years to protect and we will not allow anyone, under whatever guise ,to tarnish that name and reputation, both of which are so dear to us and millions of our admirers nationally and internationally.”

Babalola added that the unnamed parent’s claim was “full of lies and blatant falsehood.”

He argued that if the parent had his fact, he should name “my so-called sister-in-law,” adding that he did not have any destructive relation.

He argued that if the attackers were to be from another institution some of them would have been among the 200 students arrested by the police.

The Head, Corporate Affairs, Tunde Olofintila, told our correspondent that “all the students arrested were from the university.”

He added that there was no foreign student among them.

Meanwhile, a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday adjourned hearing in the criminal case filed by the police against 31 students of the university till Friday (tomorrow).

The Chief Magistrate, Adesoji Adegboye, adjourned the matter following a request by the police prosecutor, Caleb Leramo, for the advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He moved the application after the court resumed from a short stand down while waiting for the legal advice.

He said, “There is no legal advice yet. I will therefore request for a short adjournment, hoping the advice would have arrived by then.”

Earlier, the defence lawyer, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Abegunde, had requested for a short stand down of the matter.

She said, “The court can’t work at their pace, whatever they want to do, they better hurry up.”

Leramo hinted that there were peace moves between the parents and the authorities of ABUAD.

In a related development, the Parents/Teachers’ Consultative Forum of ABUAD has commended Babalola and the authorities of ABUAD for not closing down the institution following last week Sunday riot.

Speaking during a meeting with the management of the university in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, the PTCF’s Vice-President, Prof. Olusegun Oladimeji, argued that closing down the university after the riot would have led to a disruption in the university’s academic calendar.

Oladimeji added that it was the unwarranted closure of many public universities that caused what ABUAD went through last Sunday because many students had spent between seven and eight years to run a four-year programme.

He urged other institutions of higher education to take a cue from Babalola’s “uncommon maturity and understanding” by not closing down their institutions at the slightest provocation.

Earlier, Babalola had told Oladimeji that he had made up his mind not to impose financial sanctions on all the students, thereby unjustifiably making the innocent to pay for the sin of the guilty.

“I have made up my mind not to impose financial sanctions on all the students as it is the practice in some other institutions where issues like this had taken place in the past.

“It has to be appreciated that those behind the Sunday night disturbances were less than 200 out of a total student population of well over 6,000. It will therefore be unfair, unjust and inequitable for me and/or the university authorities to ask every student to pay for the sin and misconduct of just a few of them.

“If I do it, God will punish me. But I know for sure that the Almighty God that provided the resources for me to establish the university is still very much on the throne. He will provide the money to replace and/or repair the facilities the rampaging students damaged.

“I established this university for a purpose: to make a difference, to show how a university should be run and to make the students better than I am. But what a negligible few of the students have done will not and cannot shift over focus, neither will it discourage us. We have put our hands on the plough of quality and functional education, we will not look back.”

Ooni Of Ife Appointed As UNN Chancellor: Becomes The Youngest Chancellor In Nigeria

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi has emerged as the youngest chancellor in Nigeria with the appointment of the monarch as the chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka by President Mohammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued by Yera Moses Olafare, the director of media, Ooni’s palace, copies of which were obtained by newsmen in Ibadan Thursday, President Mohammadu Buhari was commended for recognising Ooni’s efforts to promote unity among Nigerians.

The statement said ” Ile Oodua is thankful to the people’s President Mohammadu Buhari of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria for the appointment of Ooni, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, as the chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN” , saying the development would further enable the monarch to build more bridges of friendship especially across the Niger.

The statement further noted that Oba Ogunwusi was ready to bring to bear, his influence and connections to promote unity and harmonious working relationships in the university.

The palace also admonished Nigerians to promote only issues that can foster unity to ensure speedy development rather than playing up their differences.

The statements reads: “It is incontrovertible today that Ooni Ogunwusi is a bridge builder and being the youngest chancellor appointed for the only university bearing “Nigeria” is worth the celebration.

“His appointment as chancellor, University Of Nigeria, Nsuka is considered as a positive sign that can further enhance peaceful coexistence of our dear nation as it was clearly stated in the letter of appointment written
and signed by Honorable Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu on behalf of Mr President that Kabiyesi’ appointment is based on his wealth of experience and his capacity to manage men and resources which he has demonstrated in the administration of his Kingdom in the last three months.”

Protest Over VCs Sack: Police Tear Gas NANS, Arrest President

A team of policemen on Thursday dispersed protesting members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at the Ministry of Education, Federal Secretariat, Abuja . The policemen manhandled a camera man working for the African Independent Television (AIT), and smashed his camera. NANS President, Mr Tijani Shehu, and no fewer than five other students, were arrested.

The students had gathered at the entrance of the ministry, protesting the recent sack of vice-chancellors of 13 Federal Universities. The students carried placards with inscriptions: “ASUU Break the Silence Against this Injustice’’, “Sack of VCs, an Attempt to Cripple our Citadels’’, “Say No to Injustice’’, among others. They argued that the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, erred in the appointment of new vice-chancellors, which they said was a usurpation of the duties of universities governing councils.

“On February 12, 2016, the Federal Government, without due recourse to the governing councils of 12 Federal Universities and the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), removed their vice-chancellors without any clear statement as to what their offences might have been. “What is the reason for the sacking of the four vice-chancellors of Federal Universities and that of NOUN before the expiration of their tenures?

“We request that the Federal Government, should in the interest of due process, reverse its decision and reinstate the illegally sacked vice-chancellors,’’ Shehu said. The NANS president said that the association duly notified all relevant agencies including the Minister of Education of its protest and wondered why the minister could not come to address them. He accused the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Students (ASUU) of complicity in the sack of the vice-chancellors as it had been silent on the issue.

However, trouble started brewing when the students smashed the windscreen of a sports utility vehicle with registration number FG 23 A31, belonging the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs as it drove by. The students chanted angrily, threatening to force their way into the ministry, if Adamu did not come out and address them. All entreaties by the policemen for the students to retreat, were resisted, resulting in the firing of tear gas at them.

At this point, journalists, bystanders and the protesting students scampered for safety while the policemen made arrests. Adamu recently announced the appointment of new vice-chancellors for 12 Federal Universities and NOUN. When contacted for comments on the development, the Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command, said he had yet to be briefed on the issue.
