6 Ways To Be A Better Listener

Listening is not a concept and idea that is unique to everyone. Some people cannot just listen to you when you are talking to them. They simply lose concentration. This is why there are so many complaints about people finding it difficult to understand each other in a relationship because they do not listen. Well, if you are not a good listen, you are in luck! Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares tips on how to become a better listen.

Listen to learn

Certain individuals listen just because they want to be polite. They are not interested in whatever you have got to say. Hence, they are right there with you but their mind is somewhere else. At the end, when you ask about what you said, they are lost.

Put your phone away

Smartphone has always been a distraction when people are having a conversion. So, to become a better listener, get rid of your phone.

Wait until the speaker is done talking

Do not interrupt a conversation. You should give that person the opportunity to finish expressing his or her opinion before you respond. During the period he/she is talking, you will be able to process what they are saying and give a more concise and intelligent reply.

Make eye contact and smile

Oftentimes, when you make eye contact with whom you are speaking with, it shows that you are paying attention. This will prevent your mind from wandering off the conversation.

Do not make assumptions

Do not try to anticipate or predict what your friend or colleague wants to say, you may be wrong. So, wait for them to express their thought and you will be surprised that it is different from what you are thinking.

Give replies that show you are listening

Your replies and responses must tally with whatever you are listening to. You should do this if you do not want to speak out of point, you should listen.

Common Vocabulary Mistakes

As a Nigerian i can't help but notice how we tend to overlook nuances in our vocabulary.
Today i will be discussing the differences between Sight, Site and Cite. As you would have noticed, the aforementioned words are homophones.

1. Sight: This directly refers to the ability to a person to see as a verb (action) e.g tell me when you sight seun. As a noun, it means the power/ faculty of seeing e.g a snake's sight is poor in dim light.

2. Site: A site is a geographical location/ point of the earth e.g the proposed site of an airport.

3. Cite: to quote or mention a book/ journal/ document (especially an authority on a subject) to support an argument or a theory e.g he cited the work of Albert Einstein to support his claim

Bayelsa Primary School Teachers Strike Indefinitely Over 9 Months Unpaid Salary

Teachers in Bayelsa public primary schools have embarked on indefinite strike to press for the payment of the nine-and-a-half months’ salary owed by local governments in the state.

This was after they rejected the one month salary offered to them by the state government to avert the action.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the teachers had commenced an indefinite strike on Monday after a three-day warning strike.

The state wing of the Nigeria union of Teachers, NUT, said in a statement on Tuesday that it has directed the teachers to commence the action.

The Chairman of NUT, Kalama Toinpre, who signed the statement, said the action was meant to press for payment of outstanding salaries owed the teachers.

Toinpre, therefore, directed all primary school teachers to stay away from classrooms with effect from Monday

The chairman insisted that they should stay at home until government pays them at least three months salaries to cushion the effects of “biting economic hardship’’ they were facing.

He said the teachers also demanded that the state government should take over the management and funding of the primary school system or “carry out its augmenting role to the local government councils’’.
He noted that augmenting primary school funding was being practiced in other states of the federation to sustain primary education.

The chairman also called on the state Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Post Primary Schools Board to implement the recent promotion exercises, and commence fresh promotions for teachers who are due.

He also demanded that the deductions made from the primary school teachers for identity cards be stopped forthwith, while all monies so far deducted should be refunded to the teachers without delay.

Mr. Toinpre urged all teachers to embark on seven days of fasting and prayers, in the first week of the strike, to seek God’s intervention over the plight of primary school teachers in Bayelsa.

He said that after two weeks of the strike, if nothing was done, teachers in secondary schools would also embark on sympathy strike that would ground the education sub-sector.

It will be recalled that the warning strike called by the NUT over the unpaid salaries in primary schools ended on May 4.

The state Commissioner for Local Government Administration had on Friday announced the payment of April salary to persuade the teachers to shelve the planned strike which the teachers rejected.
Also in Bayelsa, Health workers at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Yenagoa, under the auspices of Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, on Tuesday suspended their five-day strike.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the workers embarked on the strike on May 4, over non-payment of March and April salary arrears, and backlog of salary shortfalls owed the workers.

The suspension of the strike followed a meeting between the workers’ representatives and the management of the hospital on Tuesday.

It was gathered that the March 2017 salary was paid on Monday while the strike was in force.
The parties agreed that the strike be suspended and workers return to their duty posts from May 10.
It was also agreed by both parties that the outstanding April of JOHESU 2017 salary be paid within 14 days, with effect from May 10, 2017.

According to the agreement, signed by Denis Alagoa, Medical Director, FMC, and Save Nubani, Acting Coordinator of the union, no member of staff would be victimised for taking part in the strike.

Bedbugs Invade OAU Hostels

upload_2017-5-11_11-37-14.pngThe pitying state of dormitories in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State have made the students cry out over what they call 'bed bug invasion'

The university's Students Union president, claimed that the school management has failed to live up to expectations and have left students at the mercy of the bed bugs – who suck blood out of them

In an open letter signed by the Union President, Oyekan Ibukun Edward, the students threatened to showdown if the issue is not taken care by the varsity management.

The letter reads in part, “It is no longer news how the management of various varsities across the nation maltreat students by harbouring and accommodating them on filthy and “Kirikiri-like” prisons called halls of residence/hostels.”

The students further alleged that the university management has refused to fumigate hostels even after resumption of freshmen.

“To avoid the envisaged embarrassing situation, we wrote to the management through her Division of Students’ Affairs to ensure that the Halls of Residence are fumigated before resumption, that is, Sunday 30th April, 2017 to avoid the barbaric “Military coup” of bedbugs we have even been facing severely before the last session ended (2015/2016 session) and to ensure that our fresh students are not affected with this dangerous bedbugs as the need for them to live happily in their halls can never be flinched and flung.

Bedbugs should be extincted from our halls of residence. We say no to their parades in our rooms, they are not our roommates.”

The students also raised an alarm that bushes have began to overtake their hostels thereby leaving them open to scorpions, snakes and other dangerous animals.

Checks on halls of residence revealed that some students have abandoned their rooms to sleep in reading rooms due to the presence of bed bugs in their rooms and on their bunks.

A freshman who spoke under anonymity said “I have taken my bed to another place, the bedbugs are rampant in my room.”

Reacting, Prof. Anthony Elujoba -- Vice Chancellor of the University who has just been replaced with Prof Ogunbodede, however, said the university administration is doing much to see to the welfare of Students. He also alleged that students stalled fumigation of hostels.

“When we asked them to leave the halls they did not and there was little we could have done in that case, hostels like Angola, Mozambique were fumigated,” he said.

7 Reference Mistakes That Can Cost You The Job

In the course of job hunting, many of us stress over every detail like interview questions,
handshakes, outfits but we forget to pay an equal amount of attention to people who will
vouch for our professional accomplishments. However, there are several reference mistakes
that could easily be avoided.

Not telling your references to expect a call/email:

It's professional courtesy to ask for permission before using people as references.
If professional references are not informed to expect a call, they might react with confusion
and surprise when the hiring managers contact them for a recommendation.
This could be taken to mean that the candidate is an unprofessional and disorganised individual.

Making it hard to contact your references:

It is important to make it easy for employers to contact your references.
You have to list different contact details, email addresses, personal phone numbers (with the reference's permission of course).

Give a reference who might not have nice things to say about you:

This goes without saying, only give references you are sure will have
nothing but glowing recommendations for you. You don't want to list a former employer
with whom you didn't part ways on good terms.

Giving references that have little or no relevance:

While it was mentioned above that you should only give references
who will highlight your skill set and strengths. However, this does
not mean that you should list your family and friends.
What questions do you want a potential employer to ask your mother?
Your potential employer does not want biased feedback from a reference who appears to be a close friend.

Not giving your references enough information:

Update your references on new skills you have acquired.
Basically, give your references your resume to study before your potential employer contacts them.
It is important to have your references know a little about the position you've applied
for so they can discuss your most relevant skills and provide you with the strongest possible recommendation.

Your references can't speak about your job experience:

If you are a fresh graduate, please resist the urge to list your parents and
family friends as references. Instead, get university professors, supervisors,
mentors to give you a favourable recommendation. Your best bet for references
should always be your most recent employers or colleagues.

You didn't bring your references to the interview:

It's better to be safe than sorry, it's just paper it's not heavy,
take several copies of your references with you to every interview.
Hiring managers might not request for it right away but if they do,
you score extra points for adequate preparation.

Top 6 Employability Skills In Shortage Among Nigerian Graduates

Our educational system is tailored to produce more certificate holders than solution providers. As a student in Nigeria, you spend over 70% of your schooling years learning theories, this may be a hypothesis but it’s not far from the truth. Quite a number of courses offered in our higher institutions are focused on solving abstract problems and not real life problems. As a result we have too many people with certificates but jobless or underemployed.

Certificate don’t make people outstanding, skill does. The more skills you have, the better your options in the labour market. The level of skills you have will greatly affect your career pace and your earning potential.

So many graduates know a lot about the courses they studied but only a handful know how to create value with the knowledge and make money off it. This is because our schools don’t teach us how to apply our knowledge to real life situations. We can only learn this crucial lesson through self education.

Most powerful economies are run by people with skills (with or without certificates). To make significant contributions to our country and enjoy the dividends of Nigerian economy you need to level up your skills level. Make skills acquisition a lifetime goal.

Here’s six necessary skills every graduate should learn:

1. Digital Literacy

Digital literacy is the set of competencies required for full participation in a knowledge society. It includes knowledge, skills, and behaviors involving the effective use of digital devices such as smartphones ,
tablets , laptops and desktop PCs for purposes of communication, expression, collaboration and advocacy. While digital literacy initially focused on digital skills and stand-alone computers, the focus has shifted from stand-alone to network devices including the Internet and social media.

This is number one on the list simply because the acquisition of other skills is significantly dependent on it. We are in a digital age, and for most organizations – computer literacy is not optional but necessary. Without this skills your chances of getting a good job is limited.

2. Research Skills

Your ability to assess a situation, seek multiple perspectives, gather more information if necessary, and identify key issues that need to be addressed are critically important.

Since every potential employer, regardless of the profession, is seeking employees who can help them to solve problems the more that you can showcase your abilities in this area will certainly catch their attention.

3. Leadership Skills

Leadership skills are not only required at executive levels, they are critical for success at all levels. Leadership skills include strategic thinking, ability to make thoughtful decisions about organization’s objectives, effective communication, etc.

According to MindTools Leaders help themselves and others to do the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to “win” as a team or an organization; and it is dynamic, exciting, and inspiring.

4. Communication Skills

Communication is an inevitable skill required for success in all walks of life. This is the ability to effectively and efficiently express your ideas or views to another person. With clear communication you can get your message to a prospective employer impressively. Here’s an article on
Improving Communication Skills in Your Work and Personal Relationships (link is click able on the article). See full article link below.

5. Salesmanship

Salesmanship is defined as the level of skill you have in convincing people to buy or in persuading people to do something. Starting from your resume down to interview, this skill is important. You have to sell yourself well at each stage of the recruitment exercise to get any prominent job.

Poly Student Allegedly Falls Off Stairs And Dies

A student of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Auwal Shehu, has been found dead in front of one of the school’s hostel.

bauchi poly.jpg

A student of the polytechnic, who spoke to Punch on condition of anonymity on Thursday, said the students woke up on Tuesday to find the victim lying lifeless in front of the boys’ hostel.

“We were confused to find the student’s dead body in front of the hostel. We did not know what killed him, but we reported the incident to the management,” he said.

Details of the cause of the student’s death appeared sketchy, but a source said the victim fell off the second floor of the hostel while reading in the night.

Another source, however, said the student slumped and died while returning to the hostel from one of the lecture rooms.

The Deputy Rector of the institution, Sanusi Gumau, confirmed the incident to Punch correspondent, but dispelled the report that the student fell off the second floor.

According to him, preliminary investigation showed no sign that the deceased fell off “a high-rise building”.

“I got a call from one of the school cadets at about 5.30am on Tuesday informing me that a student was found dead in front of the boys’ hostel.

“Our medical unit did a physical check on the student and confirmed that he had indeed died. There is no truth in the report that the student slumped and died while returning from class in the night. He also did not fall off any high-rise building. Physical check showed no sign of injury; nothing,” he said.

Gumau said the chief security officer of the school reported the incident at the Yelwa Police Division.

“The police took the corpse away to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, for an autopsy,” he added.

Rivers State To Close 5000 Unapproved Secondary Schools

The Rivers State government says it has concluded plans to ban all unapproved schools operating in the state with effect from September this year.

State Commissioner for Education,
Prof. Kaniye Ebeku disclosed this when he led members of the Rivers state House of Assembly Committee on Education on an inspection of ongoing rehabilitation work at Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta in company of officials of the state Ministry of Education.

Prof. Ebeku said about five thousand illegal private schools are operating in the state.

He said that publications will be done in both National and local papers in the coming days with the full names of the affected schools.

According to Ebeku, “We found that there are so many unapproved quacks schools operating in the state and this is not acceptable for many reasons. They deliver poor quality education and because they are operating underground they are
not paying required taxes as legitimate approved organizations.

“We would not want this to continue anymore which is why we want them seize operations.”

Chairman of Rivers State House of

JAMB To Save N5bn From CBT; Holds Mock Exam On Saturday

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB has said that the Computer-Based Test adopted in the forthcoming Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would save the examination body about N5 billion.

Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede stated this Tuesday at a press briefing on the training of its examination officials in Abuja.

Oloyede noted that under his watch, JAMB would deploy cost-effective measures to deliver on its statutory mandate.

“We have tried our best as much as we can, taking efficiency as the watchword as far as the conduct of examination is concerned because we believe this country deserve the best.

All we have been trying to do is to do things that will not make Nigeria inferior in the comity of examination bodies. All we’ve been trying to do is to find the most efficient way to conduct our examinations,” Oloyede said.

“Instead of spending billions on our examinations, we can spend millions and achieve better results. That is all I have been struggling to do, to make sure that instead of collecting N7 billion and spending N6.8 billion in the conduct of examination, we should be able to save at least N5 billion,” he stressed.

While noting that there are skepticism on the part of some Nigerians about the workings of new innovations, the Registrar said he is optimistic of taking JAMB to the next level, regardless of challenges.

“Yes, some people argue that in Nigeria, there are many variables that you cannot determine. I have strong faith in this country and I believe that whatever works in normal places will work in Nigeria,” he added.

On the 2017 UTME slated to begin on May 13, Oloyede said his team is prepared to conduct a hitch-free examination across all centres of the country. “I and my colleagues in JAMB management have tried our best and have prepared as much as we can. We also believe in our partners, MTN and Airtel which are our two service providers in the conduct of this examination and I want to appeal to them to see this as a national assignment.”

On the antics of fifth columnists bent on pulling him down, Oloyede said he’s fully aware of their mission, noting that only recently; they accused the Board of ‘poor planning and incompetence.’ But for us, what we are out to do is to give the best of our services to this great nation of ours. I need not be the Registrar of JAMB if there would be no change positively.”

He added that the CBT which was adopted a few years ago was actually his initiative while holding sway as Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin. “CBT started at the University of Ilorin in 2007 and by the grace of God, I was the Vice Chancellor who started it. When JAMB was to start the CBT, it was my Deputy Vice Chancellor who was invited to deliver a lecture on ‘The Roadmap to CBT: The University of Ilorin Example.’”

Meanwhile, the mock test earlier shelved by JAMB is set to hold this Saturday 29th April, 2017 and Oloyede said he’s optimistic the challenges which scuttled the initial exercise would be taken care of this time.

Tension as Covenant University Suspends 200 Students for Ignoring Easter Service to Read
According to Punch the students were placed on compulsory suspension for not being part of the retreat.

“We were going for the services in the morning and night and people were getting tired of it because we were also preparing for exams. So, the Vice- Chancellor got angry and ordered that those who missed the services be sanctioned," a 400 Level student said.

“Some were suspended for four weeks and those who had missed eight services for the four days got a year.”

A 300-level student added that some of them have been prevented from sitting for exams and they had no means of protesting the sanctions, which he said was ‘unfair.

“The mood in school is really tensed. Though students are not protesting but they are angry because you are preparing for an exam you’re not sure you will sit for, until the paper starts.

“They stopped me from sitting for a paper last week because I did not go for a service and I don’t know if I will be allowed in today either.”

The school management is yet to address the issue.

2017 UTME: How To Confirm Your JAMB UTME 2017 Registration

Here is a post which is going to give you an easy step by step guide on how to confirm your 2017 JAMB registration. This post is to help those who want to be sure they have completed the registration process.

As we all know, the JAMB 2017 registration process is set to come to an end on the 5th of May, 2017. It is very important for candidates to be sure that they have been fully registered before this date, and also confirm there is no problem with their registration details.

The best way to confirm if you have fully registered for the 2017 JAMB UTME examinations is via an Email from the JAMB portal. Though, for so many reason you might not want to depend on this mail, and in truth not everyone gets this confirmation mail, as sometimes emails fail to be delivered.

When is the JAMB UTME 2017 re-printing of slips going to begin

Many candidates have been in search of this information, and it is no surprise. The re-printing was originally scheduled to begin on the 25th of April 2017, but that date is not realistic any longer. Since registration is set to continue till the 5th of May, 2017, one should expect the re-printing process to begin after. This is most likely to be on the 8th of May, 2017. Though this is only an assumption and not the official date, we are going to be updating once the information is officially released.

Step by step guide to Confirm your JAMB 2017 Registration

Follow the procedures below….

1. Visit the official JAMB UTME portal at
www.jamb.org.ng .

2. Login with your email address and password.

3. Click on “My Usage”

4. Check the column that says “RESOURCE” to see if a role for “2017 Registration” or something close to that is written there.

5. You can also check to see if a JAMB Registration number has been assigned to you.

Thats all.
