Tension As LAUTECH Students Block Entrance To Osun Government House

Students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, have blocked the main entrance to Osun Government House, Oke-Fia, in continuation of their protest against non payment of their lecturers, the development that has paralysed academic activities in the school.
LAUTECH Students Protest At Govt House To Celebrate Aregbesola's Birthday
The protesters, who blocked some major roads within Osogbo, the state capital, in protest, on Wednesday, in defiance to high security presence, had laid siege on the entrance to Oke-Fia Govt House, in apparent move to stop Governor Aregbesola from attending an event organised to mark his birthday holding within the state capital Thursday morning.

The protesting students had halted vehicular movement on Osogbo/Ifon/Ogbomoso road, as many early travellers are trapped in the traffic gridlock.

Amiloaded correspondent gathered that heavily armed policemen manning the Armoured Personnel Carrier, are right at the scene of the protest.

The Deputy Governor Mrs Titi Laoye-Tomori’s efforts to address the students was earlier refuted, but was later made possible with the intervention of the commissioner of police in the state, Fimihan Adeoye, who prevailed on the students to allow her speak.

Mrs Laoye-Tomori while appealing to the students, assured them that efforts were being made to find a lasting solution to the lingering crisis between the two owner states of Oyo and Osun, and the striking lecturers.

She disclosed that a meeting will be held by house committees on educations of the two states and all concerns with a view to ending the strike.

UTME 2017: Why The Results Of Some Candidates Won't Be Released – Registrar

Examination body, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board on Thursday states that the results of candidates identified in footages of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) to have indulged in unwholesome practices during the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) won't be released.

Registar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede, who spoke on Channels Television Sunrise Daily said the agency had been busy in the past days reviewing recorded footages of the examination across the country, and that a number of candidates had been marked out for sanction.

upload_2017-5-25_14-20-2.png

Oloyede, was responding to a question by one of the anchors of the programme on why some candidates were yet to receive their results despite promises by JAMB to release outcomes within 24 hours.

The registrar said, “Those who have not received (their results) are qualified not to receive for now. In all cases where there were no problems, we released results of the examination within 24 hours.

“But those who have not (received their results), they may not be culpable but we are investigating. Where we have reason to doubt anything or where we have report of anything that is not acceptable to us, we have withheld the results.

“And we will keep on releasing them as we clear them. For instance, this morning, we released another 15,000 results. But among those who sat in that centre, we have reasons, concrete evidence to say about 300 of them, their results will not be released because we know they were not in the hall where the examination took place.

“We are comparing those who sat for the examination, how long they sat in the hall, and how some of them took excuses that they were going to the toilet only to go to what they called VIP…

“All this we are now able to track. And we want to say that we will not hesitate to sanction anybody no matter how highly placed.”

Mr. Oloyede said the CCTV cameras deployed at every Computer Based Test (CBT) centres across the country helped JAMB to detect and arrest unwholesome practices.

He said some centre operators however tried to sabotage his agency’s plan to make the examination fraud-free, citing the example of a centre in Kubwa, Abuja, where operators blinded the cameras with sacks to frustrate remote detection of malpractices that happened there.

The JAMB registrar appealed to credible organisations and individuals to come forward to partner JAMB in the establishment of reputable CBT centres across the country.

“Crooks are now establishing CBT centres, and meeting our requirements only to misuse the opportunities,” he said.

Over 10,000 Candidates Caught Cheating In Anambra - JAMB

The Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) says more than 10,000 candidates caught for examination malpractices in the on-going UTME in Anambra have been handed over to the appropriate authority.
Nigerian Army Opens Base In Daura, Buhari's Hometown
Mrs Lynda Nwachukwu, the Coordinator of the board in Anambra disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Saturday.

NAN reports that the all computer-based testing (CBT) mode 2017 UTME, which started on May 13 in 642 centres nationwide, ended on May 20.

Nwachukwu said that the examination, which took place in 28 centres in the state, was successful.

“There was no disruption of the exercise in any of the examination centres,’’ she said.

The coordinator said that the candidates adhered strictly to the requirements of the examination, adding that JAMB provided all the materials required for the examination.

NAN correspondent, who monitored the last batch of the examination, reports that some parents complained of system failure in some CBT centres in the state.

Mrs Eucharia Okonkwo, a parent, said her daughter, who wrote the examination at the St Mary’s High School Ifite-Dunu centre, could not complete the examination due to the faulty computer and network failure at the centre.

According to her daughter, many candidates could not complete the questions in record time because of the faulty system.

Okonkwo advised JAMB to plan well for examination in subsequent years to avoid the technical hitches that could give the candidates psychological trauma.

Dr. Mose Mojekeh, Head, Department of Marketing at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, told NAN on a telephone, that such system failure in UTME was not acceptable.

According to him, the hiccups could potentially deny young people from Anambra State, university admission.

Mojekeh advised JAMB to urgently collate the number of candidates affected and set another examination for them.

He also decried the practice whereby JAMB sends officials from one state to supervise examinations in another state.

“Experience has shown that such officials do not care much about the candidates when problems arise, as they leave them to their fate,’’ the lecturer said.

He called on the management of schools, whose candidates experienced the computer failure, to take their complaints to the State Ministry of Education to present their cases.

NAN reports that the JAMB concluded its CBT on May 20. (NAN)

SS2 Student Expelled For Sleeping With Classmate's Dad And Teacher's Husband

A secondary school student, in one of the secondary schools in Delta State, have been expelled for allegedly sleeping with her classmate's dad for N500, alongside her friend. It was gathered that the girl, who once accused a corp member of rape, was caught with the man by the town's people when he came to pick her up before school was over.
Nigeria: Today's Newspaper Headlines [21 May, 2017]
Here's what a Facebook user, who pleaded anonymity wrote;

"An ss2 student was expelled from my ppa this morning. What was her offence? She was sleeping with her teacher's husband, they were both caught by the town's people when he came to pick her up before school was over.

This student was the same one that accused a corper of rape and getting her pregnant just to get money from him, the man she's having an affair with is a grandfather and she's also class mates with his last child I think. She and her friend slept with the man for a fee of #500, I kid you not. I thought they said if you want to eat frog, eat a big one, probably she's not heard that before. Secondary school students are something else now.

Ever since my stay here in January, I begin to see some girls in a new light, some babes are sex freaks and have seen first hand the extent they can go for it. Is it buying of gifts, giving of money to the male corpers here all in a bid for them to have sex?."

2017 UTME: JAMB Reacts To Rumours of Mark Deduction

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has denied that marks are being deducted from candidates of this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

jamb students.jpg

In a statement released in Abuja on Friday by JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, the body said the rumour was “devilish”.

“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has urged all candidates who participated in the 2017 to disregard any information being circulated by mischief makers on the deduction of marks by the board.

“This rumour is false, devilish and intended to cause disaffection among the candidates.

“The board has not deducted any marks from any candidate and is not contemplating doing that as it is not a condition for sanction in any of the provisions of the law against malpractice.

“Again, we call on all candidates to be mindful of fraudulent characters who will send misleading informations to create panic and take advantage of the situation to defraud candidates,” he said.

The board also advised candidates to disregard rumours, that some people could not check their results because they owe JAMB.

“The board has also noted that some candidates who could not check their results are being told that their results are not out because they are owing JAMB some money.

“This is a lie and candidates are advised not to pay any money to anybody as their results are send to their mails and also on our website:www.jamb.org.ng.

“Candidates are to login with their registration number or email address to print.

“The board will be concluding the 2017 examination on Saturday, May 20.

“Any candidate with any challenge should not hesitate to contact the board or check our website for information and numbers.”

FUTA Registrar Bites Clerical Officer in Fight Over Office Memo

There was drama on Thursday at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), as the school's Registrar, Dr. Modupe Ajayi, rained blows on Mr. Isaac Adams, the clerical officer in her office over a memo.

According to reports she bit Adams' head during the brawl which happened around 9:30 am at the school's senate building.

Mrs-Ajayi-FUTA.jpg

Trouble started when Dr. Ajayi was told that a memo was printed out on her office printer behind her back.

“On Thursday morning, Mr. Adams was in the office and trying to download a memo written by the university’s Legal Director to the acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tunde Arayela, in respect of the court order issued to the university concerning the payment of staff salaries. The memo was posted on our union’s Whatsapp platform but was not easily readable on the phone. This made Mr. Adams use the office printer to print out the memo so that he could conveniently read it,” a source explained.

Clerk-FUTA.jpg

However, another staff in the office, who is loyal to the Registrar informed her. This enraged Dr. Ajayi, and she stormed out of her office spewing insults at Mr. Adams and tried to forcefully retrieve the memo from him. Mr. Adams resisted the Registrar, who then decided to use physical assault to get it off him.

“Before we knew what was happening, the Registrar went berserk and bit Mr. Adams on the side of his head and repeatedly assaulted him,” the source narrated.

He also disclosed that the matter has been reported to the leadership of the institution’s chapter of NASU and to the acting Vice-Chancellor.

Another source also informed that the incident has been reported at the Okuta Elerin’la Police Station in Akure.

PHOTOS: NDDC Abandons 2016 Scholars Abroad

OPEN LETTER TO THE NDDC MANAGING DIRECTOR

On behalf of the 2016 NDDC Scholars, we write to express our displeasure, disappointment and pathetic predicament at the hands of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

On the 4th of October 2016 at the Pre-Departure Briefing of the successful 2016 NDDC Scholars at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt, we were presented with an award letter which clearly provides for the payment of our Scholarship Fund. The award letter stipulates in Paragraph 2, Clause N that;

“Your tuition fee shall be disbursed directly to your University from your scholarship fund, while the balance, if any will be paid into your account for your accommodation and upkeep.”

Furthermore in accordance with the tradition of NDDC we were promised mobilisation fee to ameliorate the cost of our travel expenses, to wit; air ticket and visa application fees.

While we were assured of the payment of the said Scholarship Fund and Mobilisation Fee almost immediately by the former managing director, 8 months after, not even a dime has been paid to the 168 awardees of the 2016 Scholarship scheme. We are indeed very weary of the long wait and dejected by the embarrassment this has caused us in our various universities abroad. The said scholarship funds were provided for in the 2016 budget, however, 5 months into 2017 we still have not been paid. One can only imagine that the delay is deliberate to enrich the pockets of those causing the needless delays.

On the 5th of December, 2016, we paid a visit to the commission seeking to get an update on the delay of our funds. We were told that the funds were being processed and promised that it shall be disbursed soonest. Till date, we are still desperately waiting for the payment.

On the 20th of April 2017, due to the massive outcry and suicide attempts by some of the 2016 scholars, the commission reluctantly paid 32 scholars out of the 200 awardees, leaving the remaining 168 to wallow in want, dejection and despair. Since the commencement of our studies abroad, the quality of our lives have substantially declined due to the failure and reckless negligence of the commission to pay our upkeep funds. It beats our imagination how a country, through NDDC, can abandon its nationals in a foreign land for 8 months with impunity and immeasurable disdain, without providing any means of survival for them as provided for in our scholarship award letters.

Sadly, some of our colleagues were denied admission because of the non-reliance of the NDDC award letters by their institutions, because the commission is notorious abroad for its reckless and unnecessary delay in honouring its financial obligations to the institutions and scholars alike. Majority of the awardees are still in Nigeria because they could not afford the travel expense because NDDC has neglected to fund the travel expense as promised.

In light of the aforestated, we humbly request a detailed update on the true situation of things and prompt payment of the Scholarship and Mobilization funds. Sadly, we are almost at the verge of losing academic focus because of lack of funds. Our daily sad but inevitable distractions in school includes but are not limited to: hunger and starvation, constant embarrassment from the University authorities who threaten to unregister our studentship and report us to immigration service for non-payment of fees, embarrassment from our landlord's with the threat of eviction and lack of funds to buy basic clothing.

On this basis we do appeal to the office of the Ag. President, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, the senior special assistant to the President on Foreign matters and diaspora, the Governors of the Niger Delta States and the Managing Director of NDDC for a quick intervention on this issue.

Nothwithstanding all the challenges we face, we are proud to be associated with NDDC and are appealing that the aforementioned issues be speedily addressed, as our academic performance depends to a large extent on a balanced psychological state.

He said: “As at today, 1,648, 429 are taking our examination and we have released the result of 1,048,914. That is the result we have released up till yesterday.

“On the first day, we released the results of Sunday because anything you call CBT, the results are ready, but for environmental reasons, we do not release the results immediately.

“That is to ensure we go through the CCTV camera to see whether there are report of malpractice and prevent the situation whereby those who do not pass become agitated at the CBT centres.

Oloyede who disclosed during this during his visit to one of the CBT Centres in Lagos said that in 2018, fingers print may no longer be required.

He explained: We have now been able to catch those people who registered two people with the same names. The impersonator and the one being impersonated went in collaboration with the CBT centres after screening them.”

He said: “Both the impersonator and one being impersonated used each fingers.

While, the impersonator used two thumb fingers, the impersonated used eight fingers to register.

Thus, we have ten registered fingers and the ten fingers were not from one person.

“In some centres, when we tested all their fingers, we discovered that they were impersonator who had used two of their fingers thumbs in both hands.

“By next year, we may not use finger print, there are other technologies whereby with the technology, everything about the candidate is captured. We need to move in that direction.”

Trouble, according to reports, started during the handing over of the newly elected executives of the Student Union body on May 8, 2017.

The newly elected President of the Student Union, Ojo Aderemi during the ceremony had stated that all females should start using "hotplates" in the kitchenettes and if any body should harass them, they should report to the Union. He said this while the Vuce Chancellor was seated. The Vice Chancellor in return said if students should go on strike, lecturers would still collect salaries.

On Friday May 12, 2017 which is today, the management of the University of Ibadan banned the use of hotplates in every hostel (both male and female). In a statement released, any student caught using it would have to face the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).

During the Adewole administration, the use of hotplates was banned only in the female hostels but now it has been banned in both hostels.

The Kingston Dome went around asking students how they feel about the latest development.

Seun (real name withheld) said "this is injustice to all students"

Another student who pleaded anonymity said "I only pray that the Student Union does not embark on a strike that would affect me".

6 Ways To Be A Better Listener

Listening is not a concept and idea that is unique to everyone. Some people cannot just listen to you when you are talking to them. They simply lose concentration. This is why there are so many complaints about people finding it difficult to understand each other in a relationship because they do not listen. Well, if you are not a good listen, you are in luck! Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares tips on how to become a better listen.

Listen to learn

Certain individuals listen just because they want to be polite. They are not interested in whatever you have got to say. Hence, they are right there with you but their mind is somewhere else. At the end, when you ask about what you said, they are lost.

Put your phone away

Smartphone has always been a distraction when people are having a conversion. So, to become a better listener, get rid of your phone.

Wait until the speaker is done talking

Do not interrupt a conversation. You should give that person the opportunity to finish expressing his or her opinion before you respond. During the period he/she is talking, you will be able to process what they are saying and give a more concise and intelligent reply.

Make eye contact and smile

Oftentimes, when you make eye contact with whom you are speaking with, it shows that you are paying attention. This will prevent your mind from wandering off the conversation.

Do not make assumptions

Do not try to anticipate or predict what your friend or colleague wants to say, you may be wrong. So, wait for them to express their thought and you will be surprised that it is different from what you are thinking.

Give replies that show you are listening
