JAMB Introduces 4th Choice, Scraps Awaiting Result

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has announced that students will no longer be able to secure admission into higher institutions while awaiting their O’level results.

jamb students.jpg

JAMB said this was part of its restructuring in preparation for the 2017 UTME higher institution examination.

This means candidates must sit and obtain the results of either West African Examination Council school examination, WAEC, or National Examination Council, NECO, before admission.

JAMB also introduced a fourth choice of school, but said candidates can apply to only one government-owned university.

In a statement by its spokesperson, JAMB also announced the introduction of fourth choice of higher institution during application by candidates.

The statement reads: “In the cause of conducting admission exercise, many institutions have admitted candidates on merit only for them to discover that such candidates do not have qualified O’levels results or the right combination for admission and had to delete and start the process all over again. With this, they would have denied other qualified candidates the opportunities for admissions.

“This we are addressing by ensuring that no candidate is henceforth recommended without his O’levels result being supplied. To achieve this, JAMB will insist that candidates supply their result on its website during registration or later, but before admissions commences for them to be considered for admissions. We believe this will allow only qualified candidates to be considered for admissions.

“Candidates and their parents are also to note that the Board has restructured the registration platform to allow for only one choice of Public University. The new registration platform will now be first choice, second choice, third choice and fourth choice and not most preferred, preferred etc as it was.

“Candidates’ first choice can be a College, University, Innovative Enterprises Institutions or Polytechnic/Monotechnic. However, if a candidate makes a Public University his first choice, he will not have any public University to choose for 2nd, 3rd and 4th choice. He will have on the remaining three choices, a College, a Polytechnic, Private University and IEI’S. However, candidates for the 2017 UTME can now select NCE (College) or ND (Polytechnic/Monotechnic) as their 1st choice up to 3rd choice and the 4th IEI. They can select the IEI (Innovative Enterprise Institution, ND) as their 1st choice up to the 4th choice, but can only pick a public university once.

“Again, we want to inform candidates that no cyber café will be registering candidates for our examination. On no account should any candidate patronize any cybercafé for our registration. It is important to note that the Board will not deploy the use of any scratch card for the 2017 UTME registration exercise.”

JAMB Explains Why Candidates Can No Longer Apply To Two Public Universities

The Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed why it restricted candidates from choosing two public universities during the 2017 online registration.

Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, told PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday that the choice of public universities was restricted to one but candidates can choose as many colleges of education and polytechnics as they want.

The new measure by the board means that candidates may select a public university and a private university, but not two public universities.

The new update was revealed by JAMB via its official twitter handle @JambHQ on Friday.

It reads: “candidates can select NCE as their choice up to three times I.e 1st choice, 2nd choice and 3rd choice.

“But they are not allowed to select two public universities as choices. If candidates select a public university as their degree awarding choices, they are allowed to select a private university as another choice.”

Mr. Benjamin told PREMIUM TIMES that the Board took the restrictions because candidates hardly get admissions into their second and third choice universities.

“Yes we restricted the choice to one but candidates can choose as many colleges or polytechnics,” he said.

“We discovered it was of no use choosing a university as second choice when in actual sense they can’t even accommodate their first choices,” the JAMB official said.

Candidates have however cried foul over this new information as they lamented that the board is indirectly enforcing the choice of private university on them.

The candidates also lamented due to the huge sum paid as school fees in private universities stating that they are not affordable by most Nigerian parents.

“The fees nko? Jamb go help the students pay the fees for the private universities? You can’t force somebody to attend private universities,” a Twitter user, Robinson said.

The President/Vice-Chancellor, Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Prof. Ademola Tayo, has said that no less than 100 open heart surgeries have been done in the school’s Tristate Cardiovascular Centre. He adds that the institution hoped to stem medical tourism with the feats.

Tayo said this on Monday during a briefing to announce the receipt of the 2016 Best Brand Award (Education Category), by the university during the World Branding Awards held in Kingston Palace, London.

The VC, who noted that the university received full accreditation for all the academic programmes presented to the National Universities Commission and the Adventist Accreditation Association, added that the Benjamin Carson Snr. College of Health and Medical Sciences got $20,000 from two members of the Adventist Accreditation Association.

He said, “Our success rate is very high because our staff subscribe to our core values of excellence and professionalism. All our doctors are resident here and we do not go on strike. Our medical students have international exposure and they are going to India for rotation. All our programmes are packaged with professional flavours. The aim is to stop medical tourism and showcase the best of our expertise.’’

In his address, the Senior Vice President, Management Sciences, Prof. Sunday Owolabi, said no student of the university had dropped out for lack of funds. FUTO Senate Releases Official Statement, School To Resume On Monday

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON THE RECENT DEMONSTRATION ON FUTO CAMPUS

The Management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) wishes to make the following statement concerning the violent demonstration and wanton destruction of University property which occurred on Friday, February 17, 2017.

1) The University, like all Federal Universities in the country, does not charge tuition fees for undergraduate students. Only fees for municipal and other services are charged.

2) There was no increase in the service fees payable, except for seven thousand naira (N7,000.00) only upwards adjustment in the ICT fee for ongoing upgrade, which was done after mutual understanding between the University Management and the Students Union Government (SUG).

3) There is no approved fee for course registration and any staff found involved in collection of money for course registration will be liable for collection of illegal fees and will face appropriate disciplinary measures.

4) There is general apathy among Students of the University to paying fees for services. Less than twenty percent (20%) of returning (old) Students have paid their service fees twelve (12) weeks into the 2016/2017 Harmattan Semester.

5) There is very strong indication that the demonstration was planned and executed from outside the mainstream of the Students' body and without the perpetrators employing various legitimate avenues of drawing attention of the University authority to any perceived grievance.

6) To prevent further breach of peace and breakdown of law and order, the University Senate has directed that the Students should vacate the campus and proceed on a one week break.

"I Used Ropes As Belts, Drank Garri Daily" – UNN Best Graduating Student

Eke Ifeanyichukwu Emmanuel emerged the 2015/2016 best graduating student of University of Nigeria, with a CGPA of 4.83. In an interview with Vanguard, when asked about the challenges he passed through while in school, he said: "I had a whole lot of challenges. .

One of them was financial challenge. I am from a very humble background. We reside in Aba. I remember in my first and second years, I used to drink garri (cassava flakes) and eat Fibre active biscuit. It was a daily ration to me. I also used ropes as belts as a student. .

I remember then, I had few clothes. No shoes to where, only slippers. Having money to pay my fees was an issue. I stayed in the hostel from first year till I graduated. In my first year, I was having an eye challenge. Then, I would be seated in front of the classroom. .

Yet, I would not see what was written on the board. No money to go to the hospital for check up talk less of getting glasses. I had a D in a three unit load first year course. It was a motivational factor that spurred me into reading more."

UNILORIN Disqualifies 711 Candidates For Submitting Fake Results

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, has disclosed why 711 candidates were dismissed after being offered admission.

unilorin main gate.jpg

He said the rejected students uploaded excellent results, which was later discovered during admission screening to be fake.

The management’s decision irked outrage from students who alleged that the university collected money from many candidates and rejected them.

Professor Ambali, while speaking with reporters said: “The issue of people trying to say we collected their money and refused to offer them admission is uncalled for.

“They wasted our time. In any civilized society those people should be prosecuted. That is examinations malpractice.

“If those people are using fraudulent means to come in, you can imagine what they will do when they become our students fully.

The Vice chancellor stressed that their admission was forfeited just to teach them a lesson, adding that the outrage is aimed at denting the positive image of the university.

“But we thought they were young people, we say they should learn by losing the opportunity.

“They can reapply. We thought they had to be taught a lesson and that was why we kept quiet.

“They are just trying to portray the university negatively.

“You know the university has come a long way.

“For the last three years, we have been the most patronized university with over 100,000 applicants wanting to come and join us.”

Alleged Fraud: FUTA Senate, ASUU Disagree Over VC’s Removal

THE senate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA and it’s Academic Staff Union of the Universities, ASUU, weekend disagreed over the removal of the embattled Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, who is standing trial over alleged fraud and misappropriation of funds.

ASUU dissociated itself from the position of the senate which despite being arraigned in court on a nine-count charge of fraud still wants the Vice Chancellor to continue in office.

The union’s position was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman, Dr. Bola Oniya. who said the position of the institutions Senate should not be misconstrued as ASUU’s position.

The FUTA Senate had resolved at its meeting last Wednesday, that no machinery or process should be put in place under any guise to remove the vice chancellor from office or compel him to proceed on leave.

This was contained in a circular signed by the registrar and secretary of the Senate, Dr (Mrs) Modupe Ajayi.

Ajaji said that since the allegations levelled against him are already before a court of competent jurisdiction and he has been able to keep the system running in spite of the current situation, he should not be removed or compelled to proceed on leave.

But Oniya, in a statement said “This is to inform the general public that the attention of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) FUTA Branch has been drawn to the widely published resolution of the Senate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure stating inter alia: “No machinery or process should be put in place under any guise to remove the Vice-Chancellor from office or compel him to proceed on leave”

“ASUU, FUTA Branch, in line with the Union’s principle, has maintained neutrality since the commencement of this crisis and still remains so.

“The union therefore wishes to state emphatically that the above position of Senate is not the position of the union and should not be misconstrued as such.”

Prof Daramola and the institution Bursar, Emmanuel Oresegun were last week dragged before an High Court sitting in Akure by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) over a nine count charge.

Why Females Prefer Colleges Of Education, Polytechnics – Stakeholders

The desire to acquire tertiary education before marriage had made most females in Borno to prefer enrolling in Polytechnics and Colleges of Education instead of universities, some education stakeholders in the state have observed.

They said on Thursday that Polytechnics and Colleges were more convenient for females because of the shorter years of studies, thereby enabling them to complete their A-Level education before getting married.

Some of them said that it was easier for applicants to secure admissions into such institutions than Universities.

The Borno state Focal Person of N-Power, Alhaji Babazannah Abdulkarim said Colleges of Education had higher numbers of females enrollment.

He said, The girl-child has limited time. Most girls, especially in Northern Nigeria find it more convenient to go to colleges than universities because they always get married before 18 years.

“Most men do not like their women to work and women also do not like to stress themselves going to the University.”

The Borno Director of National Orientation Agency in Borno, Alhaji Yahya Imam said the orientation of women in Borno and Northern Nigeria in general with regards to pursuing higher education was not encouraging, as such they preferred the short-cut offered by polytechnics and colleges of education.

The Chairman of Borno State Joint Tertiary Education Board, Muhammad Askira said the girl-child education had not been given the attention it deserved at both the local and national levels.

Askira said some ideologists even believed it was an abomination for girls to go to school.

He said, “Some men believe that women who went to Colleges or Universities always have the self-fulfilling ego to do things for themselves without depending on their spouse.”

A student of Ramat Polytechnic, Zainab Madu said it was hard to gain admission into the university and therefore preferred college of education.

She said, “Before you gain admission into the university, you have to sit for UTME and post UME, which are difficult for some of us.

“Our parents usually ask us to produce husbands immediately after secondary school; some of us will always want to hop into any available school for fear of being forced to get married.”

The Registrar, Muhammad Goni College of Legal Islamic Studies Maiduguri, Alhaji Ahmadu Abdulfattah, said most of those seeking admission into the college right from its inception were women.

“Most women feel comfortable with NCE programme. Here we teach civil and sharia law and we still have a high number of women,” he said.

Differences Between A Short Story, Novelette, Novella, And A Novel

When I first started writing professionally, there were a lot of basic questions in my mind, one of which was, What are the major differences between a short story, novelette, novella, and a novel?

Novellas and novelettes might not be very common, but we often see short stories and novels. Knowing the differences, however, is still important. Although they are all works of fiction, each type has its own purpose. In this article, I will try to put light on some of the major differences between flash fiction, short story, novelette, novella, and a novel.

Beginners will find this very helpful in their writing journey. Apart from some of the basic differences in terms of word count, you will also learn a few technical points that differentiate these works of fiction.

Flash Fiction: 53 - 1,000 words
Short Stories: 3,500 - 7,500
Novellettes: 7,500 - 17,000
Novellas: 17,000 - 40,000
Novels: 40,000 + words

What Is Flash Fiction?

53 - 1,000 Words

Flash fiction (also known as short, short stories, micro fiction, or postcard fiction) are stories that take pride in their extreme brevity: some works of flash fiction have only 53 words, while others have 1,000. These works used to be referred to as "short short stories" until around the turn of the century (the year 2000), when the term "flash fiction" became the norm.

What Is a Short Story?

3,500 - 7,500 Words

The most important difference between a short story, novelette, novella, and a novel is the word count. An average short story usually has at least 3,500 words and no more than 7,500. Traditionally, short stories were meant to be read in a single sitting. They are usually published individually in magazines and then collected and published in anthologies.

A short story is one of the most common forms of writing. It is often used to describe a single event, a single episode, or a tale of one particular character. A short story does not usually involve major twists and conflicts, and involvement of various sub-plots and multiple characters is not common. A short story is basically fictional prose, written in a narrative style. However, the narrative style may either be first person or third, or whichever the author chooses.

What Is a Novelette?

7,500 - 17,000 Words

A novelette is also a narrative fictional prose. Back in the day, the term "novelette" referred to a story that was romantic or sentimental in character. To be honest, in modern times, the term is rarely used, and novelettes are rarely published singly.

A novelette is longer than a short story, but shorter than a novella. The word count is usually between 7,500 words to 17,500 words.

What Is a Novella?

17,000 - 40,000 Words

Novellas were first introduced in the early Renaissance (1300s), but their genre did not become firmly established until the late 18th and early 19th century. A novella is longer than a novelette and is sometimes called a long short story or a short novel. Although in the past, novellas were commonly written and published, and some to great acclaim ( A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess and The Metamorphosis by Kafka, for example), these days it is considered to be an awkward length and it may be more difficult to get a novella published.

It can involve multiple sub-plots, twists, and characters. Its length constraints mean you'll find fewer conflicts in a novella than you will in a novel, but there will also be more nuance and complication than you'll find in a short story. Novellas are more often focused on one character's personal and emotional development rather than with large-scale issues. In the past, the novella was often written with a satirical, moral, or educational purpose in mind. Therefore, it usually depicts the tale or story of a single character, but as I mentioned, it can involve multiple characters. Unlike novels, novellas are usually not divided into chapters, and like short stories, they are often meant to be read in one sitting.

What Is a Novel?

40,000+ Words

The novel is one of the more common works of fiction that we encounter. A novel often involves multiple major characters, sub-plots, conflicts, points of view, and twists. Due to its considerable length, a novel is meant to be read over a period of days. The plot moves forward through many characters, actions, thoughts, time periods, and situations. The reader often feels that the story deviates and is affected by the involvement of different sub-stories and sub-plots, by the passage of time, or by the involvement of new important characters– this is considered the real beauty of a novel.

The word count of a novel is really debatable. This is because different genres have different requirements. However, a novel is usually no shorter than 40,000 words. For modern publication, editors often consider a novel one which is spread over 80,000 – 120,000 words. Romance novels, however, can be shorter than that. On the other hand, a fantasy, horror, and science fiction usually see works of greater lengths.

The word count for fantasy novels often touch the 240,000 mark. Some famous books, like the Lord of the Rings series, are famous for containing so many words. The Harry Potter series has 1,084,170 words; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix itself has 257,045 words.

According to him, actual dates will be announced soon. He also advised candidates to beware of false dates and fraudsters.

“2017 UTME is scheduled to hold in May 2017. Actual dates will be announced soon. Beware of false dates and fraudsters,” he said.

Meanwhile, JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede has explained why an unusual delay has preceded the sales of application forms.

He said the ongoing switch-over in the major thrust of the sale of form which is the scratch card to direct payment into the Treasury Single Account (TSA) was responsible for the delay.

PHOTO: Auchi Polytechnic Students In Peaceful Protest

Students of Auchi Polytechnic marched out in their hundreds in a peaceful protest to express their dissatisfaction about the persistent strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) over a number of issues such as unpaid salaries, undue demotion, sack and suspension of some lecturers alleged to be corrupt, and other issues which are yet to be addressed by the government and the polytechnic’s management.

Academic activities in the school have been in perpetual undulation due to the serial strike actions by the union. This has cause a setback for the students who until this moment still have their fate hanged on a limbo.

The academic and administrative atmosphere in the institution is very tense at the moment. Efforts by the Students Union Government (SUG) to bring the lecturers and management to a round table to reach a compromise have proved abortive as the lecturers are more agitated than ever.

Students, in demonstration of their frustrations took to the street in a peaceful demonstration to raise the consciousness of the government to their challenges and frustrations. They carried boards and placards with several inscriptions that signaled to the government their plight. However, their protest caused the blockage of a federal road, shutting down movement for two hours.

The SUG pleads with the government to come to the aid of the students and academic staffs alike because as the saying goes, “when two elephants fight, it is the grasses that suffers”. Students are at the receiving end of the struggle between the lecturers and management.
Also, The constant encroachment of the previous year’s academic calendar into this year, non-mobilisation of students for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the giddy flow of academic activities (to mention a few) in the institution is one too many. The government should intervene with swiftness before the situation degenerates to a barbaric and bestial stage.

UTME 2017: 8 Latest Updates Candidates Should Know

We hereby announce eight  latest updates from JAMB regarding the forthcoming UTME 2017 for all candidates wishing to sit for this years Unified Tertiary Examination Examination for admission into Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in Nigeria.

While many are gearing up to complete registration for UTME 2017 and prepare academically for the examinations, here are some vital updates they must keep in mind:

1. Registration has not started
It is vital that we begin with this, because many have put up posts that the registration has begun. However, in his latest discussion with the press, the JAMB registrar stated clearly that registration has not commenced , but will commence soon. UTME 2017.

Therefore, ignore any other news to the contrary as we will be breaking the news, when registration commences.

2. 1.7 million candidates are expected
In 2016, the number of candidates that registered for the exam was: 1,561,443, this year about 200,000 more people are expected.

The registrar of JAMB, Prof Ishaq Oloyede himself gave the figure while speaking with students and other bodies . This means that you need to ensure you begin registration as early as possible to get a good centre and avoid been caught in last minute rush.

3. Mock UTME to be conducted
This is also good news for those who are taking the exam for the first time as it will help them have a feel of what it is like, before the pressure of the real thing.

Plans are in place for a mock UTME and this might explain the delay in beginning the sales of the examination forms. So if you are preparing, start your preparations now, so you can do well in both the mock and the real deal.

4. CBT Centres
As the number of expected candidates has increased the board also has plans in the works for more Computer Based Testing (CBT) Centres in order to the make examination exercise far better.

Since there is only one week to satisfy, 1.7 million students, it is totally understandable that more centres will be brought into play.

5. There Will Be CCTV
Another key feature of the 2017 UTME that students need to keep in mind is that cheating and any other form of examination malpractice is really frowned upon.

To ensure this is enforced, the guideline for CBT centres include: The adoption of CCTV cameras for all of them. This means one thing, the exams will be closely monitored.

6. Technology Will Be Deployed
Also, technology will play a big role in this year’s exam. This is the type of hall to expect as a UTME 2017 candidate:

A single hall containing 250 functional desktop or laptop computer systems with extra 25 as backups.

The computers must be minimum 15 inch screens and must be connected to robust computer server with capacity to carry a minimum of 250 systems concurrently.

7. Validity Duration
Another wonderful news for students is that unlike previous years, the result they get from this year’s exam will now be valid for 3 years and not one year as it was previously. The Nigerian Senate passed the extended validity period into law on Thursday, October 13, 2016.

8. Harmony of timetables
Lastly, the organizers of the major examinations, including JAMB met to avoid a clash in schedules and in order to have a harmonized timetable. An agreement was reached at the national headquarters of the Board in Abuja on Tuesday, January 24 , after a meeting with National Examination Council (NECO), West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Business and Technical Examination (NABTEB) to harmonize the timetable.

PHOTOS: UNIOSUN Students' Protest N10,000 Late Registration Fee

There was pandemonium as students of the Osun State University, today marched to the streets to protest N10,000 late registration fee imposed by the management of the school.

The Student Joint Campus Committee, Osun State University, Osogbo urge the vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Labode Popoola to remove the N10,000 charge for late registration by students.

According to the students “The management of the institution closed the school portal and reopened it after much pleading but the management added a sum of N10,000 as a penalty for the late registration.

The students pleaded that the management of the institution should consider the country's present economic condition and reverse its decision. “The economy of this nation is biting harder on our parents. The school management should consider the students.”

“The staggering figure in the wake of this new development is that the students (almost everybody) are yet to complete their course registrations before the sudden closure of the portal in December, 2016”.

“There are fresh students who had barely settled down before the portal was closed in the same month, leaving them unaware of the school system. The entire students found it difficult to believe that the management would take such decision as it was alien to us. We thereby seek the cooperation of the VC to spare N10,000 late registration penalty”.

The students also wrote a letter to the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr Najeem Salawu in which they urged him to intercede for them.

Meanwhile, the VC had earlier expressed worry that the students were in the habit of not paying school fees at the appropriate time and that some of them were indebted to the university to the tune of N2billion.

Secondary School Student Found Dead in Abandoned Hostel

Daily Trust gathered that the student left class to urinate behind the abandoned structure around 9:00am, but he was found dead later.

A teacher in the school, who doesn't want to be named, said the innocent student might have been forcefully dragged into building and murdered.

He said that some students claimed that they saw a man suspected to be the killer, who managed to scale the school fence and ran into nearby houses at Garin Maina after he was chased by students.

"The students gave him a hot chase but lost him at Garin Maina. Those who saw him at a close range said he resembled an ex-student, but we also learnt that the Army have arrested him,” he said.

YABATECH Short Paying Salary By 25 Percent

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Yaba College of Technology chapter, has accused the management of the institution of short paying staff salary by 25 percent.

ASUP Chairman in the college, Mr. Adeyemi Aromolaran, on Thursday, insisted that the workers would not call off their strike until the full salary is been paid.

The union had on February 10 begun an indefinite strike over non-payment of the balance of January salary by the college management.

Aromolaran said this was not the right time for the management of the institution to deny workers their full salary when the economy was biting hard.

According to him, for about 10 years now, workers’ salary is being paid by both Federal Government and the institution on 75 per cent and 25 per cent ratio, respectively.

He said, “The Federal Government had in January paid 75 percent of the salary while the school management is expected to pay the balance of 25 per cent.

“The balance, which represents various allowances, is yet to be paid by the management.”

He said the allowances were supposed to be paid from the Internally Generated Revenue of the college.

Aromolaran said that the payment of the salary on the ratio of 75:25 by the government and school management had been on for more than eight years.

According to him, the fractional payment policy has been on since the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He also alleged that for more than 10 years, staff salaries and allowances have not been reviewed.

He said, “This is not the right time to deny workers full payment of their salary. The economy is biting harder on the workers, particularly in Lagos State.

“We will not call off the strike until the management pays us our money, all academic activities will remain suspended.”

He recalled that the union had a similar experience in August 2016, but that after a protest, the Minister of Education intervened by directing that the allowance is paid.

“This time around, we will remain on strike until our full salary is paid. The management is trying to play pranks with the union.’’

He said that if it warrants waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to return from vacation, the union would not suspend the strike.

Governor Ajimobi's Aide Arrests Students During School Hours

Governor Ajimobi's Aide Arrests Students During School HoursA patrol team led by Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Community Relations, Abidemi Siyanbade has arrested eight students of secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo state. The students were arrested on Tuesday, for roaming the streets during official school hours.

The students include students of Methodist Grammar School, Bodija; Bishop Onabanjo Memorial Grammar School, Bodija and St Luke Grammar School, Molete.

Siyanbade who stated that the clampdown on students who wandered during school hours would be more regular, listed Community Grammar School, Osungbade and Ibadan Grammar School among schools whose students were notorious for truancy.

The eight students were subsequently taken to Oyo State Social Development Centre, Samonda for counselling.

He added that the parents and principals of the arrested students had also been invited to the Social Development Centre for appropriate counselling.

He also pointed out that the just inaugurated School Governing Boards (SGBs) would also help the resolve to stem acts that constituted indiscipline among students.

“Imagine our students being tagged ‘Olu-Igbo’ because they are always in the bush when others are in class. We are acting on the directive of Governor Abiola Ajimobi to clampdown on truancy in the state,” Siyanbade said.

1.7 Million Candidates Expected To Sit For 2017 UTME — JAMB Registrar

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board , Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has said 1.7 million candidates are expected to sit for 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in April.

He said this on Tuesday in Abeokuta at the sideline of the examination body’s Information and Communication Technology retreat involving civil society groups, students and other major stakeholders.

The two -day retreat held within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex in Abeokuta.

He said the JAMB also aimed at increasing the capacities of its Computer Based Test Centres in order to make the April examination seamless.

He said , “We are expecting 1.7 million candidates to sit for the UTME this year and we want to make sure we satisfy these candidates within a week or thereabout.

“That is why we are increasing the capacity of the Computer-Based Test Centres to be able to examine more candidates within a given date.”

Oloyede who said the body would not promise a hitch-free examination, noted that there were changes and innovations ongoing which would send some illegal operators who had defrauded candidates in the past, out of business.

The JAMB boss, however, said the examination body would not be deterred in its mission to serve its candidates better.
