Russia Celebrates A Nigerian Who Graduated With 5.0 CGPA In Masters Degree

A Nigerian, Ifesinachi Nelson Ezeh, has won international acclaim for finishing his Master’s degree at Saint Petersburg Agrarian University in Russia with distinction and for his edge-cutting research in Agronomy. His feat earned him a Ph.D scholarship. HANNAH OJO writes on the exploits of the youngster whose aim is to tackle the food crisis in his fatherland.

Ifesinachi Nelson Ezeh, a 26-year-old Nigerian, has dazzled Russia with his brilliance. The Nsukka, Enugu State-born student finished his Master’s degree in Agronomy at Saint Petersburg State Agrarian University, graduating with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 – the highest Russia has ever recorded.

Ifesinachi’s feat was celebrated by Russians during the university’s graduation. Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture and the school leadership showered encomiums on him, praising his dedication to quality research and academic excellence.

His journey to success started from a newspaper in 2008, when he read about a scholarship scheme to study in Russia. Then, he had just enrolled at the Nigerian College of Aviation Studies in Zaria, Kaduna State. But, Ifesinachi forfeited the admission for the scholarship.

According to him, his father got the information about the scholarship and encouraged him to apply. The scholarship is a bilateral agreement between Nigeria and other countries, including Russia, Cuba, China and Libya.

He said: “I was among the top five students selected at the College of Aviation after the scholarship examination. This got my dad excited. I was waiting to resume at the college when I received a call from Abuja, inviting me to come for the scholarship interview. The urgency of the information gave me no room for preparation. But, I went for the interview and travelled to Russia for study.”

In November 2008, Ifesinachi arrived in Russia with 40 other students from Nigeria for his Bachelor’s degree. Since Russian language is a prerequisite for study in the country, he enrolled at Don State Technical University, where he learnt the language for one year. Afterwards, he was transferred to Saint Petersburg State Agrarian University to study Agronomy.

Ifesinachi’s brilliance was discovered in his sophomore year when he was assigned to Prof Lev Gennadievich Tyryshkin as his thesis supervisor. Also a researcher at the Russia Institute of Plant Industry, Prof Tyryshkin exposed Ifesinachi to academic and industrial research methodologies.

“That was when my journey in scientific research started,” Ifesinachi said, adding: “The professor is an atheist and for the time I spent with him in the laboratory, I literally became an atheist too, because my mind was preoccupied with research work.”
Ifesinachi’s research on species of Aegilops won him recognition from the Science Community in the Europe.

The research, he said, was to re-study six species of Aegilops (a wheat variety) and bread wheat that were said to have effective LR23 gene for resistance at juvenile stage. In the course of the study, Ifesinachi discovered inadequacies in the previous researches carried out by scholars in the field.

He said: “It was during the comparison of results of the DNA markers and phytopathological tests that I discovered there were possible errors in the previous studies. After that, we reset the conditions that were recommended nationally for phytopathological study. Our results were narrowed down to the large collection of specimens that have been approved for hybridisation with bread-wheat nationally from 15 specimens (six species of Aegilops) with effective LR23 gene for resistance at the juvenile stage.”
After his research, it was discovered that previous researchers falsified records and gave the Russian government wrong information about the Aegilops species. Ifesinachi’s results enabled the Russian government to update plant bank gene collections with effective genes.

The student said his closeness to Prof Tyryshkin contributed to his success, because he had access to Plant Bank Collection in Saint Petersburg, which he said houses several collections of genes and known species and varieties of plant.

It was not smoothsailing all the way. In 2012, his first research was rejected when it was published. Ifesinachi blamed it on his level of fluency in Russian language then. The rejection, he said, made him to develop more interest in research work.

He said: “In 2013, I got more results and I presented them to the university leadership. Two of us were selected to represent the university at a regional level. We presented our research results to the jury of the regional contest. We won and moved to the national level. My research was adjudged third best work at the national level and I am the only African student among the best student-researchers. I was recognised by the Russian Ministry of Agriculture. My university gave me an honorary degree in recognition of my feat.”

Ifesinachi’s feat improved the ratings of Saint Petersburg State Agrarian University and fetched him a scholarship for his Master’s degree. He completed his undergraduate degree with a CGPA of 4.92 and finished his Master’s degree with a CGPA of 5.0 – a distinction.

He got a scholarship for his doctoral degree during the university’s convocation.
While his academic feat was being celebrated by the Russians, he was unsung by his country
Ifesinachi said he did not get any commendation from the Nigerian Embassy in Moscow.

He said: “The only reward I got came from the Saint Petersburg State Agrarian University. I never got a call from the Nigerian Embassy in Moscow. I felt I should pass the information through the scholarship board, but it appeared nobody showed interest.”

On the challenges he faced while in Russia, Ifesinachi said the greatest was being alone in the midst of Russians speaking their language fluently. “I always felt lonely in their midst,” he said.

Ifesinachi suspended his doctoral programme and returned to Nigeria last month for the National Youth Service. Against the expectation of his supervisor, Ifesinachi said he decided to return home and serve Nigeria in field research before going back for his Ph.D.

“The Dean of my faculty was worried when I told him I would be in Nigeria for a year before resuming my Ph.D. I think it is justified to impart the knowledge I garnered in Russia to my countrymen. I was on scholarship for seven years. I also need to serve my country, which gave me the opportunity.”
Ifesinachi is also a budding writer. He has published a fiction work titled: Sister Kingdom. He said the motivation came from his family.

According to him, he wants to use his innovative research expertise to solve the country’s food crisis through plant breeding. This, he said, would enable him fulfil the purpose of his scholarship.

Bello, who gave the approval on Wednesday during the closing ceremony of the 2016 Batch A (Stream Two) Orientation Course at the NYSC orientation camp, at Paiko in Niger State, said that despite the dwindling resources of the country, the state government remained committed to the welfare of the corps members.

He therefore directed all the local government councils in the state to join in the welfare programme for the corps members, warning that no ministry should reject corps members posted to them for their primary assignment.

He said, “The corps members must be given the necessary support to enable them feel comfortable and contribute their quota to the development of the state. No matter how small the resources are, we will make their stay comfortable.”

ASUU Rejects FG's Scrapping Of Post-UTME

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Wednesday, kicked against the Federal Government’s directive for tertiary institutions to scrap the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, Post-UTME, for admission of candidates for the 2016/2017 academic session, saying the quality of tertiary education in the country could improve if the institutions are allowed to regulate their students admission process.

ASUU President, Comrade Biodun Ogunyemi, said such freedom would enhance the quality of education.

Recall that at a recent joint policy meeting to decide the cut off mark for students seeking admission into the universities, the government announced the scrapping of post-unified tertiary matriculation examination (UTME).

The Post UTME is the second stage of screening usually conducted by universities for the final selection of candidates qualified for admission for an academic session.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu had threatened to sanction any university or tertiary institution found conducting examinations under any guise to admit students.

He further directed tertiary institutions that had collected money from candidates for such purposes to immediately refund it or face appropriate sanctions.

The ASUU boss told NAN that such directive encroached on the autonomy of the institutions.

“I think government should give these institutions the chance to regulate themselves,” he said.

“They should decide for themselves, the process they dim fit to admit their students. The Senate of universities for example, should decide on the process they want to use in selecting candidates.

“We do not think it’s right for government to decide the method of screening of the candidates, indeed, we want to attain some level of sanity and quality in the system.”

The unionist added that government could only come into the process by putting in place the necessary guidelines as part of their oversight functions.

According to him, it may not also be easy for institutions that had already collected money for the conduct of the post-UTME or screening in whatever guise to refund such money.

He added that this was because such money could have been diverted to other purposes.

Ogunyemi noted that most universities were under-funded and therefore, might have used some of the money to attend to urgent needs of the institution.

“Some of the arguments raised in this entire episode is that universities or tertiary institutions were using the conduct of such examination to make money,” he said.

“But the truth is, these institutions are poorly funded. If universities for example are properly funded, will the vice-chancellors be looking for other means of making money?

“In the last seven months, university workers have been receiving incomplete salaries, that is, the disbursement of funds for payment of salaries has always been inadequate.

“When situations like this arise, the managements will not be left with any choice than to look inwards and seek means of meeting such needs.

“And one of such strategies is by conducting such examination.”

Ogunyemi noted that the state universities were worst hit for many of them had yet to receive subvention in the last one year.

“Actually we in ASUU frown at extortion of any type from students or candidates but the government too should be alive to its responsibilities by providing the enabling environment that will aid teaching, leaning and research.”

PHOTO: Corpers Bemoan Living Conditions In Camps

Following the close of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, camps yesterday across the nation, corps members spoke to Vanguard Learning, during the orientation, about the deplorable living conditions on camps, particularly temporary camps, and the lean food rations in both temporary and permanent camps. These camps accommodate, at each orientation, between 2,500 to 3,000 graduates.

Temporary camps refer to secondary schools that are used by NYSC as camp in the absence of an NYSC- owned compound for orientation purposes. Whenever orientation is to hold, the students of the school, always boarding schools, vacate the premises and squat in a nearby school. While this in itself is a questionable practice, because all sorts of ills can befall the students during this migration and squatting period, it would be tackled squarely on a latter date.

One would therefore wonder; NYSC was established in 1973, how long could it possibly take to establish permanent sites in the 36 states of the federation?

A corps member currently on camp in Anambra State, Ijeoma Philip, shared her experience in one of these temporary camps. “Anambra doesn’t have a permanent site yet. They use Progressive Secondary School in Umuinya-Oyi, LGA.

Agreement with the school

The school isn’t on holiday. I heard that when there is orientation, NYSC which has an agreement with the school, moves the students to a catholic school nearby. The conditions aren’t so bad though, it’s just a matter of management.

“The toilet area is sadly water-logged, as a result, people don’t like to go inside. The result is that the place is messier than should be. The toilet is pit latrine but we make do. The first two days, the water supply was bad but they eventually had the pumping machine fixed. They probably underestimated the number of persons that would come. The mattresses are old but are not bed bug-infested.”

Deplorable Conditions: A former corps member, Titi Bada, recounted her ordeal thus; “I served in Sokoto in 2013. The conditions there were horrible. They do not have a camp there, they use Government Technical College, Farfaru. When we first got there, I vehemently argued with my fellow corps members that the school was not inhabited by students before we got there. I took my stand based on the conditions we met there.

“The ceiling boards were all broken. There was no bunk in my block, we had to look for stones to suspend our mattresses on planks and other surfaces we could find. Two girls managed to get the semblance of a bunk, one was on top and the other at the bottom.

“Eventually, the top bunk collapsed on the lady at the bottom in the middle of the night. There was no bathroom. The entire dormitory area had just 4 pit toilets. If I was told, I wouldn’t have believed such conditions exist in modern day Nigeria. There was no water. The big reservoir had dirty water in it. Eventually, NYSC had to bring tanks that were filled once a day by tankers from outside the school.”

Permanent Camps: On the other hand, corps members in permanent camps have a fairer tale to tell. Taiye Odunuga, a Batch A Stream 2 corps member currently in orientation camp in Osun state, which has a permanent site, says life in camp is fine, save for the long queue at the tap for water. “I would rate the hostel average. The only problem is the long queue for water which is caused by poor water supply and a below service capacity water tank.”

Standard of hostels

Nearby Oyo State, Dare Sopade, also a Batch A stream 2 corps member, has nothing but wonderful tales. “Oyo State has its permanent site at Isehin, Ibadan, they just relocated here in 2014 I guess. Generally, everything is fine.

“The living condition here is one of the best in Nigeria, if I am not mistaken. The accommodation here meets the standard of hostels in federal universities. The rooms are spacious, well ventilated, we have a standby generator. However, for safety reasons, to avoid fire outbreaks, they removed all the sockets in the rooms; you know how boys can be. I believe this camp is the best in all the western states.”

Okolo Okus, also just leaving camp, curtly said; “I am currently in Benue State. It is a permanent camp situated in Tarka LGA. The hostels are above average because it is a new place. The hostels are not painted but you know Nigeria, they start things and they don’t finish.”

Stomach Infrastructure: As regards food rations, Okolo continued; “The food is above average, it is three square meals but the rations are small. They said the government gave them N500 to feed each corps member daily. So, N500 divided by three meals, that’s approximately N167 per meal, you can envisage the kind of meal you will get. That also means the quality is paltry like the amount.”

Meanwhile, Ijeoma Philip in Anambra said; “Sometimes the food is fine, other times it isn’t. It is the usual thing when cooking for so many people. I heard that the kitchen staff say food stuffs are in short supply, so the rations are small. The soups are surprisingly tasty, but that is characteristic with eastern Nigeria. The beef isn’t bigger than a finger though.”

Taiye Odunuga, lamenting the poor quality of food in Osun camp, said; “The standard of food and the quantity has made me and several of my colleagues rely on food joints in Mammy Market, a sales and service area within the camp, for feeding. The food is not impressive. I hardly go to the kitchen because it feels like a waste of time.”

In Oyo State’s camp, Dare Sopade complained; “Swallows are not really bad, but once the food they prepare has anything to do with tomatoes, the rations will be small. Jollof is also generally okay because it is prepared with tin tomatoes. Beef is reasonable because they seem not to lack beef in these parts. The fish is always very small. It is not for satisfaction, it is just to have something in the stomach. After the meal you can top up with one of the N50 sausage rolls.”

When in Sokoto, Titi Bada recalled; “The food rations were very small till we started cooking for ourselves, platoon by platoon. We were promised cows by dignitaries but it did not report in the food, we were still given pieces of meat that were no bigger than seasoning cubes. Food stuffs then weren’t so expensive but they were still not generous with the food rations. When we began to cook for ourselves, platoon by platoon, the rations improved.”

NYSC responds: Faulting the allegations of corps members, Director, Public Relations, NYSC, Mrs. Bose Aderibigbe, said the Director General, NYSC, Brigadier General Sule Kazaure, goes to the kitchen to see what corps members eat. “I don’t think they are telling you the truth, the new DG of NYSC is on orientation tour. He has been to almost 23 states, he goes to the kitchen and there is no complain whatsoever.

Tasting the food

Because he is fasting he cannot taste the food. In the stream one, he was tasting the food. I have been tasting the food too, because I have been on his entourage.

‘’The Federal Government gives us N500 to feed them per day. You know the cost of living today. There has been no increase in their feeding allowance. They take chicken and egg, what else do they want?

‘’The DG checks their toilet, in male and female hostels, to see how clean they are. He goes to the clinic to check if there are corps members who are sick, whether they are being treated correctly or being given the right drugs.’

“We were in Plateau State yesterday (Monday), we were in Bauchi on Sunday, on Saturday we were in Jigawa. On Thursday we were in Kastina. The other time, we were in Sokoto. We have been to Akwa Ibom, Cross river , Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Ondo, Ekiti, Kogi and Osun states; the claims are not true.”

Kogi State Teachers Can No Longer Guarantee Quality Teaching

Teachers in public primary and junior secondary schools in Kogi State has stated that they could no longer guarantee quality teaching in the state due to the poor welfare condition of the teaching staff.

Speaking in a media conference on Tuesday, the Chairman of the state chapter of Basic Education Staff Association of Nigeria (BESAN), Mr Ohino Baiye, explained that government had refused to pay members the minimum wage of N18,000 which other workers in the state had been enjoying since 2011.
He also rejected the ongoing 60 percent payment of teachers salary from the bailout funds, saying they must be treated equally with other workers by being paid 100 per cent.

The chairman also opposed the sudden increase in PAYE deductions from the payment of the outstanding March, April and May salaries of teachers, saying that this must be reversed immediately.
He further appealed to the government to ensure the payment of leave allowance as well as effect promotion and annual incremental steps which had been outstanding in the last six years.

Baiye expressed BESAN’s support for the recent screening of workers in the state, demanding, however, that the report of the exercise be made public as quickly as possible.

But the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy , Alhaji Abdulkarim Abdulmalik, said the 60 per cent wage being paid to teachers was based on the agreement reached with the Nigeria Union of Teachers.

Abdulmalik pleaded with the teachers to exercise patience as the government was already taking steps to pay them the balance of 40 per cent.

On their outstanding allowances, the adviser said that the issues would be addressed only after the payment of outstanding salary arrears from the bailout funds.

He said that education remains a top priority of the administration, adding that teachers’ welfare and rehabilitation of infrastructural facilities in public schools were at the centre of the reform to be carried out in the education sector . (NAN)

NYSC Allowances In 26 States Across Nigeria

In Nigeria, every year fresh graduates travel across the nation to different states in a scheme called National Youth Service Corps popularly called NYSC.

The NYSC scheme was an initiative of the Yakubu Gowon military regime in 1973 to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war.

While many Nigerians have called on successive governments to scrap the scheme as they say it has outlived its usefulness, many others have asked that the scheme should be retained.

Maritime University To Commence Academic Activities Soon – Naval Chief

The Nigerian Navy said on Tuesday that the naval Maritime University in Ibuza, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta, would soon commence academic work.

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice-Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, made the disclosure when he visited the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta in Warri.

Ibas said that the process of obtaining the required approval for already constructed institution was being concluded.

The naval chief said the proposed university was initially conceived as a Navy College.

Ibas explained that the university was established in order to close academic gap which had necessitated the Nigerian Navy sending its personnel abroad to acquire some special skills.

”The moment the Federal Executive Council (FEC) grants the approval to commence operations, the university will start academic activities.

“It is true that the Navy is in the process of obtaining the necessary clearance to have it converted to a university that will serve the navy as well as members of the public.

“You will recall that the Navy undertakes a lot of its courses abroad in some civil institutions.

”So what the Navy has done is to go into partnership with some foreign partners who will assist us in establishing a school that will cater for the needs of the Navy in some areas we are currently deficient.

“The process of getting the university licence is still on-going, we are contacting all the relevant agencies of government for approval,” he said.

Ibas also attributed the relative peace in the Niger Delta region in respect of insurgency to the dialogue approach adopted by various organs of the government.

”You will recall that different organs of government have been dialoguing with the militants concerned, while the military maintains its posture of ensuring that militant activities are curtailed.

”For us as the Navy, in peace and war times, our duty is to ensure we police the general maritime areas and ensure that legitimate business thrives,” he said. (NAN)

BREAKING NEWS: Minister of Education Orders Refund Of Post-UTME Fees

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu
Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has directed all tertiary institutions that have conducted post-UTME examination to immediately refund money taken from candidates.

The minister has also declared that post-UTME examinations already taken are null and void; threatening that any institution caught still conducting the examination under any guise would be sanctioned.

The minister made this position known yesterday, in a press statement issued by Deputy Director Press and Public Relations, Ben Bem Goong. The strong-worded statement reiterated the Ministry’s position that post-UTME examinations have been cancelled with immediate effect and no institution should conduct such examinations. The minister warned that once the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has certified a candidate worthy of admission into any of the tertiary institutions, that candidate must be deemed fit by the institution.

According to the statement, students who have already been offered admission by JAMB may be screened by the institutions but this must not involve the conduct of any other entry examination. The candidates can be screened by verifying their certificates but not through the conduct of examinations. The minister stated that it is unnecessary to subject students to further examinations when they have been offered examinations by JAMB since they will still have to go through between eight or 12-semester examinations throughout their four to six years study in the institutions.

The minister, therefore, directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) and appropriate departments in the Ministry to communicate the directive to relevant agencies and institutions to ensure strict compliance.

“Those who have already advertised for the conduct of the Post-UTME under any guise should stop the exercise immediately as any university caught conducting Post-UTMNE will face appropriate sanctions. If any tertiary Institution has already conducted Post-UTME, such an exercise stands annulled and money taken from such candidates must be refunded immediately”, the Minister said.

The directive to stop the post-UTME examinations was given by the minister nearly a month ago. The minister said through the statement that it was important to emphasise the directive in order to ensure that no stakeholder is left in doubt as to government’s position on the matter.

He affirmed that the responsibility for admission into public tertiary institutions lies solely with JAMB and under no circumstance whatsoever, should anybody or institution take over that responsibility by proxy.

“The ban is with immediate effect, and under no circumstance should any institution violate the directive”.

“Any educational institution after secondary education is regarded as a tertiary institution. Therefore all tertiary institutions, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, Universities or by whatever name it is called after secondary education must be subjected to admission through the JAMB. At the end of probationary admission by JAMB, the candidates can be cleared (screened) for final admission. For any institution with a shortfall in admission, such institution can revert to JAMB for supplementary admission”.

“Clearing in this case (screening) entails only the verification of certificates of the candidates, JAMB scores, and any other physical examination to ensure that such candidates are not cultists. After this, the candidates are qualified for matriculation. Such screening should be at no cost to the parents or students and should be done upon resumption in order to avoid unnecessary travels in search of admission”, the minister said.

For secondary school leavers who are seeking admission into the tertiary institutions, Malam Adamu said that subjecting them to too many examinations all in one year, is traumatic, exploitative and absolutely unnecessary. This is besides the cost of travelling, hotel accommodation and examination fees that parents have to incur in their bid to secure admission for their wards.

A 100 level student of Federal university of Technology Minna, Niger state was attacked by thieves yesterday who tried to rob him by using cutlass on him. .. almost the same thing happened when two 100level students were coming back from school yesterday night around 11pm when one of them almost got stabbed but luckily for the student the operation wasn't successful.

These thieves have been robbing students of Futminna right from time especially those in Bosso campus living off campus but it's getting worse now.. these guys ain't joking anymore... is either they come inside the lodge when everyone is asleep or they stop you on the road and they'll make sure you drop whatever gadgets you have with you or else you'll be injured seriously.

I hope the management of Federal university of Technology Minna, Niger State and the Niger state government takes necessary action. This is unbearable .
