Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Friday launched the Rivers State School farm/Agri-Business Initiative Project aimed kick-starting student interest in commercial farming across the state.

Governor Wike also announced that his administration will in the coming weeks appoint principals in secondary schools without substantive principals and also promote deserving teachers.

Launching the pilot scheme of the project at the Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta in Obio/Akpor LGA, Governor Wike said the project will help in enhancing food security in Rivers State.

According to him, exposing students to the tenets of practical farming, will encourage them to embrace commercial agriculture in the future.

He directed the State Commissioner, Mrs Onimim Jacks to provide the necessary support to all the school authorities involved in the school farming project.

Governor Wike said: "It is important to introduce school farms in different schools in the state. We want to encourage our students to embrace practical agriculture."

The governor charged the management of Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta to ensure that all intruders are kept out of the institution.

He assured that his administration will develop boarding schools in all the three Senatorial Districts of the state.

In her address, the Rivers State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs Onimim Jacks said that the state government will revive previously abandoned demonstration farms and seed multiplication centres in different local government areas.

She said in the next phase of the project, the State Government will promote pilot farms in selected schools.
