OAU New VC, Ayobami Salami Writes To Students And Staff Of The Institution

Dear colleagues, students and other stakeholders in the Great Ife Project, it gives me great joy to welcome you to the dawn of a new era as I assume office today (24th June, 2016) as the new Vice Chancellor of this University. I am not unmindful of the humongous challenges of my new responsibility as the 11th Vice Chancellor of this great institution, especially within the context of our experience of the most recent past.

We cannot lose sight of the fact that it is a very trying period of our enviable history. Nonetheless, the work of moving our university to the next level must be done, as I pledged to do prior to my appointment. Let me make a clarion call on all stakeholders, including all staff, our alumni, friends, benefactors as well as all and sundry to join hands with this new administration which has pledged to be firm, just, equitable and independent in running the affairs of our institution. If there are groups or individuals with any concern, this administration is ever ready to engage such constructively in a round-table so as to amicably resolve matters, instead of resorting to any self-help that may lead to disruptions and disturbances to members of the community. Let us all remember that this is our common heritage and whatever we do to promote, nurture, sabotage or destroy it will be documented for posterity.

Our university, as an enviable citadel of learning thrives on hybridization and cross-fertilization of ideas. In Ife, there is always and always will be space to think, express our views both in words and enlightened actions or else, we are not worthy of our name as a university. OAU is therefore, a freedom land where intellectualism must drive our differences and harmonise our energies for the sole purpose of enriching our students- the only reason for the existence of this university community.

This is no doubt, a noble time of courage, discipline and daring vision. However, our community cannot sacrifice two dynamics of freedom and academic progress: truth and discipline. It was Plato who said to Aristotle, “You are my friend but truth is my greater friend.” In a time when tertiary institutions like ours are competing with the ever-increasing but much newer universities, we must as a community shun untruth and embrace our opportunities. On the other hand indiscipline is neither a friend of truth nor progress. This is the time we must celebrate our values, uphold our principles and stick to our laws.

I know the time has come for a constant dialogue between the leadership and the community about our common interest and I shall practice that. I wish to assure everyone that yesterday is gone, and a new dawn is here! This is a University with great potentials that we must all agree to properly harness for the good of all.

I once again pledge to work for the greater good of our great citadel of learning, and making the legitimate welfare of all stakeholders a priority. The time-tested committee system of the university shall be upheld and the administration shall adopt an open door policy where anyone with any valuable contribution shall be welcomed.

I hereby appeal to all and sundry to join hands with me in a bid to move this institution to higher grounds. I envision this administration as the bridge between our past that we cherish and the future that we admire. As encapsulated in my Vision Statement, I am aware that history beckons on me as the new Vice-Chancellor not only to be able to sustain the gains of the past, but to also be able to capacitize the system for innovative strides at the onset of a new ‘decade’ in the annals of the governance of the University. It is now my responsibility for the next 5 years to be a catalyst for change by demonstrating a genuine commitment to academic renaissance, re-invigorating the learning environment, staff and students’ welfare, networking and consensus building within the system.

I must hasten to add that all these laudable objectives can only be achievable if we all join hands together to move our beloved institution forward. It is my strong desire and hope that this new dawn will be remembered for progress, academic breakthroughs and our citizen’s great welfare. This requires that all hands must be on the deck and I, on my part, hereby extend my hand of friendship and reconciliation to everyone. I am determined to embrace this opportunity for service with singularity of purpose, majesty of the spirit and fidelity of intention. Individually we can make a difference but together we can make an impact.

Professor Ayobami Salami

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has approved the establishment of three new public primary schools in the state.

The schools are: Local Government Primary School, Oke-Ishagun/Ikola, Alimosho Local Government Education Authority (LGEA); Community Primary School, Abule-Eko, Ikorodu LGEA; and Tsangaya Primary School, Orofun, Ibeju-Lekki, LGEA.

According to the Executive Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LSUBEB), Dr Ganiyu Sopeyin, the establishment of the new schools is as a result of the government's commitment to expanding access to free and qualitative basic education.

Sopeyin warned public school teachers against collecting levies from pupils or their parents or violating any other rules or regulations to avoid facing disciplinary action.

With the new addition, Lagos now has 1,010 public primary schools.

Fountain University JUPEB Admission Form Out – 2016/2017

The Fountain University Osogbo Joint University Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB) admission form for the 2016/2017 academic session is out. Candidates who has just written WAEC and have not written JAMB should apply, also candidates who wrote JAMB, but scored below 180 should also apply for the one year foundation programme.

The requirement needed for the Fountain University JUPEB admission into the 2016/2017 academic session is five Credits including English and Mathematics in related subjects to the course of study.

The Ogun State-owned Dauda Adegbenro Polytechnic, Itori, has uncovered an illegal study centre operated by some fraudsters.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Alfred Fatade, made the disclosure on Thursday when the management of the institution paid a courtesy call on leadership of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council in Abeokuta.

He said the study centre was located in Benin City, the Edo State capital, and that the fraudsters had already rolled out admission opportunities for prospective applicants.

Mr. Fatade said the fraudsters were so audacious that they printed handbills and posters to deceive prospective applicants into seeking admission to the centre said to be with the approval of the Ogun State Government.

He explained that the discovery was made following number of requests within and outside Ogun State by confused applicants and parents, who got knowledge of the fake admission offers.

“We have just uncovered a fake study centre of Ogun State owned DS Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic. The illegal centre is located in Benin,Edo State Capital. The fraudsters also provided handbills and posters to deceive prospective candidates,” he said.

The rector said following the discovery, the management had to dispel the information and distanced itself from the fake centre, adding that a report had been made to the police.

While cautioning prospective candidates and their parents to steer clear of the centre, Mr. Fatade‎ said the polytechnic had no study centre in any part of the country or abroad.

He said, “I want to use this medium to tell the world that, the institution has no any study centre, and we do not operate outside the permanent site which is located in Itori town of Ewekoro local Government of Ogun State, along the old Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.”

Mr. Fatade also said the convocation of the 10-year old institution, named after a former Minister for Lands and Labour in the defunct Western Region, Dauda Adegbenro, would hold before the end of the year.

According to him, the convocation would be for all 8th sets of graduating students.

He said the institution had produced many competent graduates who were currently doing well in various disciplines across the globe.

2016 LASU Post-UTME Screening Issues: Latest Update By The Management

INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES THAT CHOSE LASU AS SECOND CHOICE (PREFERRED) INSTITUTION FOR 2016/2017 ADMISSION SCREENING EXERCISE.

It has been brought to the attention of the University that candidates who chose LASU as 2nd (preferred) choice of institution are facing some challenges in registering for the 2016/2017 admission screening exercise.

Please be informed that:

a)      Your Screening Exercise will commence after the receipt of the 2nd choice Omnibus list from JAMB after the conclusion of the 1st round of the screening exercise.

b)      Screening exercise for candidates who chose LASU as 2nd choice of institution will take place in August, 2016. However, information in relation to this second (2nd) round of screening will be placed on LASU website.

c)      You must constantly check LASU website for announcement on the time-table for the Screening Exercise for candidate in your category.

d)      Spaces have been reserved for second (2nd) choice candidates for the purpose of this exercise.

e)      Candidates that did not chose LASU are not QUALIFIED for screening. However; if such candidates apply, they will not only beDISQUALIFIED, but would also forfeitwhatever payment made, as it is NON-REFUNDABLE.

Taraba releases N600m teachers’ salary arrears

Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State

The Taraba State government has released the sum of N600 million for the payment of salary arrears of primary school teachers in the state.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Darius Ishaku, Mallam Hassan Mijinyawa, disclosed this to Daily Trust in an interview. He said the state government owed teachers three months’ salaries, leading to a strike action by teachers.

He said the strike ended after the money was released as agreed with the teachers.
Chairman of the State Primary Education Board, Mr. Yakubu Agwaizo, has confirmed release of the money and commended the government.

FUPRE Admission Screening 2016: Eligibility, Screening Date And Registration Details

Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) invites suitably qualified candidates for admission screening exercise for 2016/2017 session.

Eligibility
All candidates who scored 180 and above in the May 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and chose Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun as their choice.

Only candidates who have five (5) credits at one or two sittings (including English Language and Mathematics) are eligible to apply. Candidates awaiting results may, however, be considered for the 2016/2017 Admissions Exercise.

Method of Application and Procedure for Registration
1) Candidates are to pay a non-refundable fee of Two Thousand Naira (N2,000) only as screening fee and One Thousand Five Hundred Naira (N1,500) for past questions, plus processing/other charges.

OAU Embarks Indefinite Strike

The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have shut down the institution indefinitely over continuous protests by some of its workers.

The Registrar of the university, Dotun Awoyemo confirmed this to our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday.

According to him, the management has decided to shut down the university for the safety of students and staff.

He said, "We have shut down the university indefinitely pending the time that we will resolve issues with our workers - Non-academic Staff of University (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU).

"We have asked our newly admitted students to go home and postponed the resumption of old students indefinitely."

It was gathered that old students of the OAU were expected to resume next week after a two-month break.

Recall that ‎workers of the OAU under the aegis of NASU and SSANU have intensified their protest against non-payment of allowances and alleged imposition of a Vice-Chancellor despite the 'no work', 'no pay' threat by the university's authorities.

They vowed to stop the newly appointed VC from resuming office on Friday.

Our correspondent gathered that the protest intensified when the University's Governing Council announced Prof. Ayobami Salam as the new VC.

Though the counsel to the university denied the appointment of a new VC at the Osogbo Federal High Court hearing last Friday afternoon, the Governing Council on Saturday officially announced Salami.

UNILORIN VC Blames CAN For Osun Hijab Crisis

The Vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali has blamed the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Osun state chapter, for the recent religious crisis in the state.

According to him, a court h=judgement had allowed Muslim students to wear Hijab to school; CAN should have appealed the judgement in court instead of resulting to self-help.
Speaking on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the conference on Law and Religion held in the university auditorium, he warned that it was unacceptable to use antics of religion to violate the law.
“‎Rather than appeal the judgement and use the law, the Christian Association of Nigeria (Osun state chapter) resorted to self help saying Muslim girls cannot wear hijab in public/christian schools. CAN directed pupils to go to school in their choir gowns and thereby violate the approved school uniforms.”

“There was tension that has now simmered as harmonious co-existence and healthy ‎development became threatened by the antics of using Religion to violate law when law was seen to be consistent with religion.
“However, when religion appears to be a tool in the hands of lawless men,harmonious co-existence is undermined and development is compromised,” he stressed.
Professor Ambali, therefore, urged Nigerians to stay away from religious crisis in any form because it compromises development.

Ministry Of Education Convenes Meeting To Workout Modalities For Admission Screening

The Federal Ministry of Education will be convening a meeting which will have Vice-chancellors, admission officers and other stakeholders in attendance to discuss processes for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, who equally stated that the meeting would hold next week.

According to the Permanent Secretary, the minister of education Mallam Admu Adamu has made pronouncement concerning the conduct of Post-UTME which should be complied with.

However, she stated that responsibility is now on the ministry to give institutions guidelines and modalities on how to go about what the honourable minister has said; hence the need for a meeting of all stake holders to work out modalities.

The Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, Prof. Samuel Bandele, Speaking at a media conference for the 21st convocation ceremony of the institution, disclosed his approval of the FG's Decision to ban Post-UTME, also that he has banned public smoking within the campus.

During his speech, he also mentioned that he has ordered students of opposite s*x living together, popularly called “couple life” to stop such forthwith.

Bankole made another announcement which revealed that 18,685 candidates were to receive degrees, diplomas and post-graduate diplomas during the convocation slated to take place on Friday, June 24.

Of the figure, 3,054 were full-time students, 392 were for Sandwich,10,613 for Affilliate colleges and 3,937 were part-time students.

78 will get their PhD degrees, 366 for Masters, 127 for professional Masters and 118 for Post-Graduate Diploma.

A total of 24 students will receive First Class honours degree, even as some Nigerians, including the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, are to be conferred with honorary Doctoral degrees.

Lagos State University Rewards Its Top Students With N4m

The Lagos State University have reportedly gifted 160 students of the institution with a total of N4 million. The students were rewarded for making 4.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average and above during the 2015/2016 academic session.‎

The Vice Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, presented the cheques to them on behalf of the school management on Friday, June 17, at the Ojo Campus.

While presenting N25,000 to each student, the VC congratulated them and urged them not to relent their efforts.

He said:-

“We are proud of you, but you must work harder to sustain the grade. Do not relent in your efforts because you were celebrated today.”

The Vice-Chancellor also urged the other students to work harder “to join the success train ‎so that they will also be rewarded.”

Comfort Ekaette Inyang, BABCOCK Best Student: I Never Had A Boyfriend On Campus

Miss Comfort Ekaette Inyang, the best graduating student of Babcock University, Ilishan, Ogun State, is a wise virgin. The 21- year -old Computer Science graduate topped the 2015/2016 session, finishing in First Class division with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.96.

Inyang said she set the goal to become the best student right from her first day in the university and was never distracted by frivolities. “I was very focused, never had a boyfriend on campus but had close friends who supported me. I was actively involved in school activities. I had a timetable and I adhered strictly to it”.

For falling in love with her books, she smiled home with four academic awards, including the Vice Chancellor’s prize for the best graduating student. She said the university had shaped her life positively, paving her successful career path.

“Babcock University not only taught me but also showed me that it is possible to excel in every aspect of my life without compromising my dream and aspirations. Universities And Polytechnics Adopt Fresh Measures For Post-UTME

With the scrapping of the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, some universities in the country have created fresh measures to screen their candidates for the 2016/2017 academic session, findings by our correspondents have revealed.

While some have merely tagged the new measures as “screening of certificates”, others insist that their candidates must sit for other written examinations.

This comes as some others have yet to roll out the modalities in place of the post-UTME.
The Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu, while declaring open a Combined Policy Meeting on admission to universities, polytechnics and other higher institutions, in Abuja, two weeks ago, announced the scrapping of the post-UTME.

He described subjecting candidates to another round of examination after the UTME conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board as unnecessary.
At the Lagos State University, Ojo, where the authorities said they would respect the Federal Government’s directive, its Head, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations, Mr. Martin Adekoya, said the university had initiated a fresh screening measure.

Adekoya said, “For now, I may not totally rule out any further examination but the university has inaugurated a screening method.”
Finding by one of our correspondents show that the university is allegedly demanding N5,000 for this year’s post-UTME registration. The school, it was also gathered, had scheduled the registration for between June 9 and 24.

For the University of Benin, which has already fixed between June 27 and July 9 for the what it called “Computer-based screening” at its Ugbowo campus, the candidates would pay an application fee of N2,000 that excludes other charges such as those for past questions as well as Interswitch and Portal Services.

But while some schools are still rolling out the modalities, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, one of our correspondents gathered, has already conducted the post-UTME.
Justifying the examination, the Head, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Tunde Olofintila, said, “We ran our post-UTME on Saturday. In the past, people came in with jumbo marks they could not defend. So, the post-UTME is a way of checking this.”

The founder of the university, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), had earlier faulted the scrapping of the post-UTME.
Meanwhile, the University of Ibadan said its Senate had yet to release modalities for the screening of candidates to the ivory tower.

Its Director of Communications, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo, who confirmed this to one of our correspondents on Monday, however, said that the university was aware that scammers were trying to defraud some candidates seeking admission to the school.
He said, “The university has not taken a decision on modalities for admission but we will let members of the public know as soon as possible. The screening criteria will be peculiar to the standard set by the institution.

“We are aware of admission scammers who have been luring parents and candidates into believing that they could influence their admission into the school. They reportedly collect N40,000 from each candidate but we are using this opportunity to warn parents and candidates to beware of such scammers. They do not represent the admission office of the school or its management. So far, the school has not released its 2016 admission guideline.”

Also, the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere, Abeokuta, Ogun State, through its Public Relations Officer, Sulaiman Adebiyi, said the institution was considering a number of options to replace the post-UTME.
The polytechnic, he said, would insist on the candidates’ UTME as well as the West African Senior School Certification Examination results.
Adebiyi said, “The institution has not arrived at any option yet but we are considering a number of options.

Definitely, any student seeking admission into MAPOLY must meet the cut off mark by the JAMB and he or she must have good grades in his or her ‘O’ level results.
“As I told you, we have yet to take any final decision on that. But soon, the modalities will be worked out.”

Similarly, the Head, Directorate of Public Relations, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Mrs. Emi Alawode, said the Governing Council and the Senate of the institution were still consulting with relevant stakeholders on the most appropriate substitute for the scrapped post-UTME.
She said, “As soon as the conclusion is reached, we will make it public.”

For the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo, said the school would wait for further directive from the Federal Ministry of Education.
Adebanjo said, “What we are trying to do in our pre-admission screening is to ensure that we take appropriate guidance from the Federal Ministry of Education. What we are going to do will be in the ambit of the directive of the ministry. “

One of the private universities in the state, the Achiever’s University, Owo, said it adopted simple traditional mode of screening the students by checking their results and interviewing them to assess their level of intelligence quotient.

The Head, Public Relations of the institution, Mr. Adebayo Olagunju, who said admission process had commenced in the university, noted that its potential students were currently passing through the screening in line with the style of the school.

He said, “We have commenced the screening now for our new students. What we normally do is to invite them and we check their results and interview them to know their characters. So, anybody found to be deficient will be screened out. “

In a related development, the Vice-Chancellor of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Prof. Samuel Bandele, has backed the scrapping of the post-UTME, describing it as “unnecessary duplication.”
Bandele, who spoke at a briefing in Ado Ekiti, said, “The scrapping of post-UTME is a good one, but this cannot stop the universities from screening prospective students because that has been the tradition even before the advent of JAMB.”

Also, the VC of the Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, Prof. Debo Adeyewa, said the university would not conduct another examination for candidates.
Adeyewa, who said universities in other climes had their ways of screening students for admission, noted that the idea of centralised university admission did not support university autonomy.

He said, “The post-UTME is one component of screening. We still have other ways of screening the students to know if their credentials are genuine and to know their background.
“We screen to know more about the character of the students. We do not conduct another examination but we will screen their credentials.”
