4 Reasons Why You Should Not Offend Your Lecturers by Olsoo(m): 9:53am

As we all know it’s a common thing in Nigerian Universities –especially Public Universities- that students often offend Lecturers. While the lecturers sometimes are to be blamed, the silly behaviors some students exhibit cannot be exonerated as well. This article was concocted because the last time I checked, 99% of the time a lecturer has deemed that he has been offended, students bears the loss.

So Campus Dailies give to you, 4 reasons you shouldn’t infuriate your lecturer.

1) High Probability of Failing the Lecturer’s course
This, of course, needs little explanation. You offend a lecturer, you automatically become his/her enemy. He detests you and whatever can be associated to you; yourself as a person, your tests, assignments ,exams and even your colleagues. Yes! Your colleagues. So in case you’re reading this and you have that friend that has no other hobby than stepping on lecturers’ feet, you surely don’t need a priest to tell you what to do.

2) High probability of Failing the Lecturer’s colleagues courses
It is worthy of note that the support and love lecturers in the same department have and show themselves is out of this world. I equate it to the love a male toddler shows his toys and the love a female toddler has for her dolls. I remember vividly when a course mate offended Dr. X , only for Mr. Y to come to class the next day and say: “Dr. X has told me that you guys lack morals and home training. ‘We’ know what to do to you”. Did you notice the we in quotation? That explains it all.

3) Degraded Focus / Distraction
I’m very positive no one here would love to always be th topic of negative discussion by a lecturer; especially in class. He calls you to answer questions on topics that are in the 9th week on the scheme, when you’re just in the 4 weeks into resumption. He calls you names, publicly throws insults at you, awards you scores way below what you merit both in tests and assignments, the list goes on and on and on. Every right thinking student would agree that the aforementioned are step-brothers to Distraction.

4) Poor grades

You’re in school to study and obtain good grades, right? To make mama proud huh? Or is it to get that ‘Dream Job’? But how on earth is that possible when you’ve spent considerably large portion of the semester trying to get back on the good side of a lecturer? Prevention they say, is way better than cure!

There you have it people. We hope those who make a fun of offending lecturers would turn a new leaf.

NUC Cautions Nigerians Against Patronising Online Universities

NUC-Logo.jpgThe National Universities Commission, NUC, on Thursday called on Nigerians to stop patronising online universities and other degree awarding institutions operating online.

Speaking at a press conference, the NUC’s Public Relations officer, Ibrahim Yakasai, said that degrees obtained online are not accepted in the country.

“Nigeria will not recognize online degrees. Online degrees are not accepted in Nigeria at the moment,” he said.

Mr. Yakasai warned Nigerian students and parents against patronising Maryam Abacha American University in Niger Republic.

“We wish to restate that as the only quality assurance agency for universities in Nigeria, the NUC is maintaining its stand that degrees from Maryam Abacha University will not be accepted in Nigeria” he said

He noted that the Commission has been inundated with enquiries from some Nigerian students who had been offered admission to the university.

He said the concerned students were offered admissions on part-time basis with a graduation time of four semesters for programmes like Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health among others.

Mr.Yakasai explained that in Nigeria the duration for a fulltime degree programme is not less than three years for direct entry and at least six years for part-time.

He said professional programmes in Science, Engineering and Health Sciences including Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science and Public Health are not offered on part-time basis in Nigeria.
He added that all part- time cross border education in Nigeria are not allowed.

Mr. Yakasai said the Maryam Abacha University admits Nigerian students who do not have the basic requirements to gain admission into the nation’s tertiary institutions in addition to running courses such as Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science on part-time basis which, according to him, is not acceptable.

Mr. Yakasai said all countries are at liberty to accept any qualification they wish to.
Many Nigerians enroll annually in online schools based in the United States and the United Kingdom, and other countries.

Read JAMB’s New Policy On Admissions Into Institutions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) at its 2015 Combined Policy Meeting, held on July 14, 2015 in Abuja, announced the adoption of a policy whereby candidates of universities with surplus applicants for the Unified Matriculation Examinations (UTME) are reassigned to other universities with lower number of candidates than their capacities.

JAMB 2015 UTME
According to the Registrar/CEO of JAMB, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, the policy has two benefits:
  1. It will be beneficial to “needy Universities” that is universities with lower number of candidates than their capacities, as this will ensure that these universities will have more candidates to admit.
  2. Candidates will have better chances for admission in the universities they are re-assigned to, contrary to situations where they would await admission in the universities of their first choices until the admission exercise closes and they forfeit admission in that session.
This policy has been implemented with immediate effect. Consequently, the eligibility for Post-UTME screening in the University of Lagos like other universities in Nigeria has been determined by JAMB.

Candidates Decry New JAMB Admissions Policy, Threatens Court Action

Candidates of the Joint Admission And Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination trooped to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) campus on Tuesday afternoon to protest against the management of the institution and the registrar of JAMB, Professor Dibu Ojerinde.

JAMB 2015 UTME

The students, who were already preparing to sit for post-JAMB tests in UNILAG expressed shock at discovering their institutions of choice had been arbitrarily changed in their candidate records without their consent, and they called for the matter to be probed, and Professor Ojerinde removed.

The protesters explained that JAMB’s action has randomly distributed them to schools they did not choose, and is forcing them into random schools against their individual wishes.
The protesters included the affected candidates, who said their records of choice schools have been arbitrarily altered by JAMB, some parents and legal practitioners, who have threatened to bring legal action against the Board.

They also criticized the University of Lagos, which raised the cut-off score for qualifying to take its post-JAMB test, accusing the institution of arbitrarily changing JAMB’s cut-off score to dictate its own.

“JAMB said it is 180,” one of the affected candidates explained. “Even if UNILAG said it wants 200, it might be understandable, but what is 250?”

One of the parents who came to the protest pointed out that his had repeated the JAMB test for the third year because he only wants to attend UNILAG.

“He rejected an offer from another institution in the last year’s season. How then can JAMB suddenly change his choice institution when he’s about to take post-JAMB test again in UNILAG?” he asked.

Asked another parent, “How can JAMB by its own decision change my daughter’s school to Maiduguri where [Boko Haram leader] Shekau will probably be the VC?”

An activist who led the students in the protest, Dr. Kayode Owolabi, threatened to sue JAMB over the action. He accused the Board of deceiving and defrauding the students over sales of “Change of Institution and Course forms” only to later disregard their choices and distribute them randomly into schools they did not choose.

“I opened my record online and found a notice that my institution of choice has been changed by, single-handedly by JAMB,” one of the candidates explained.

Wesley University Shuts Down Over Unpaid Workers’ Salaries

The authorities of the Wesley University of Science and Technology, Ondo State, have sent students of the institution on a forced holiday following a strike embarked upon by lecturers of the school.
wesley
The university founded by the Methodist Church of Nigeria reportedly owes the lecturers 21 months salaries.

It was gathered that the lecturers’ strike had forced the university to postpone its second semester examinations.

Meanwhile, the authorities had directed the students to proceed on vacation on July 10, 2015.
A source in the university said the authorities took the decision to avoid the students’ demonstration.

The authorities, it was learnt, conveyed the news of the closure of the school to parents via text messages reportedly sent by the acting registrar of the school.

It read, “Our esteemed parents, we have some challenges with salaries and lecturers said they could not conduct exam until they were paid. Since it is dragging, we resolved that students should go home for safety. They’d be called back close to resumption for next semester to write the exam. Please, bear with us.”

However, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Samuel Akindele, who denied that the lecturers were on strike, admitted that the authorities owed the workers some salaries.
Akindele added that the students were on a two-week mid-semester break to enable the authorities to resolve the matter with the lecturers amicably.

He stated, “Lecturers are being owed for some months and the management has yet to release the money for their payment.

“The lecturers said without the payment, the exam could not hold and in order not to delay the students, especially those going for the Industrial Attachment, the authorities decided to give them the mid-semester break.”
