PATHETIC! Tale of okada rider-undergraduate asked to quit for owing school fees

His story is that of an average poor Nigerian youth, sired by humble parents who cannot afford quality education for their children, no thanks to the prevailing economic hardship, but whose children are determined to have education through self effort, doing odd jobs to survive.
Contending with poverty, Adegboye Oluwadare Adebare, 24, an indigene of Modakeke, Ife-East Local Government Area of Osun State, rides an Okada (commercial motorbike) to make a living. He also hopes to pay his way through the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State.
When Adebare was admitted into the institu­tion, his joy knew no bounds as it offered a chink of hope. He was a bright student, but the abiding penury of his family was a challenge to the realisation of his dream. He is supposed to be in part three in the Department of Theatre and Media Arts, but he is currently battling for reinstatement, having fallen a year behind be­cause he could not pay his fees on time at the 200 level. He told Daily Sun that he asked for withdrawal for a semester, because he could not pay the school fees.
Unfortunately, he has not only lost a whole session, but has now been asked by the school authority to withdraw for failing to pay school fees for that session. In the letter by the school’s Faculty Officer, Humanities and Social Sciences, the school said his inability to complete the 200 level and his failure to pay up the school fees, violated the school’s regula­tions and therefore nullified his studentship:
“The Faculty Board of Humanities and Social Sciences at its 13th meeting held on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, considered your application for temporary withdrawal and noted that you failed to register for 2013/2014 academic session.
“Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor on behalf of Senate has approved the recommen­dation of your Faculty Board that you have voluntarily withdrawn from the university. On this note, you are hereby advised to submit all university properties at your disposal (if any) to the Faculty Officer and vacate the university
Adebare contended that he did not miss a whole session of his second year: “I was offered admission to read Theatre and Media Arts by FUOYE during the 2010/2013 academic session. In 2004, I had difficulties paying my school fees for the 200 level ses­sion on time. I decided to ask for a temporary withdrawal from the school for the second semester of the session to enable me travel to Lagos and hustle for the fees. I submitted the letter to the school authority but was later told that the time I wrote the letter was late.
“Thereafter, I rushed to Lagos to hustle for money by riding the commercial motor­bike and eventually gathered the money. I promptly paid the school fees for that session into the school’s account in a bank in Lagos. The money was acknowledged by the school account’s unit and a receipt was issued to me online. So I thought that I would just have to resume for the new session and restart the 200 Level while my colleagues with whom I was admitted into the school resumed into the 300 Level.
“But just recently, I got a letter advising me to withdraw from the school for failing to show up for academic work and pay school fees for a whole session of the 200 Level. I promptly appealed to the school authorities, clarifying that I had only missed a semester in the 200 Level and not a session. I had attended lectures and sat for exams during the first semester of the said session.
“I also explained that according to the school regulations, a copy of which I have, I can only be asked to withdraw if I had missed a whole session. I added that prior to missing the second semester of the said session, I had written a letter to the authority, appealing for a deferment of the semester to enable me raise funds through self help for my school fees.
“I reminded the school authorities that I actually paid for the said session later and that my payment was even acknowledged by the school, only that my student portal later was shut. I pleaded with the school authorities to temper justice with mercy by reinstating me, considering my pitiable condition of lack of financial support from anyone. Up till the time I am talking to you, I haven’t got a reply to the letter of appeal from the school. And I have followed up the letter and even got to know  it. that the registrar and the Vice-chancellor have
“I am just appealing to the school authori­ties, relevant bodies and particularly, Mr. Presi­dent, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who graciously gave us this university, to kindly reinstate me. All I want is to get a degree that would enable me face the future more decisively. I don’t want to lose the opportunity to get a tertiary education. I really desire to be somebody in
life.
The fact that my humble parents could not afford the tertiary education for me has not dis­couraged me from struggling to get it on self-sponsorship. This admission is my only hope for this dream. I am begging that it should not be withdrawn from me.”
Dean of the school’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Rasaki-Ojo Bakare, told Daily Sun: “Where the ex-student missed it is that he didn’t apply for the defer­ment on time so that the Senate would give him a permission to be absent for the said ses­sion. It’s only when he gets permission from the Senate that he can go ahead and leave the school for a whole session. I know him, I am his Head of Department. He didn’t show up in the department for a whole session of 2013/2014, but he found his way to sit for the second semester exams somehow.
“He didn’t register and didn’t pay the school fees even till the late registration elapsed. He only paid it when a new session was about to start and that cannot work. The school authorities found out that he violated the school regulations by staying away without permission for a whole session. They wrote to him, advising him to withdraw because he has deliberately withdrawn himself from the school by his action.
“Appeal in this case cannot even work because he has already logged out of the school system. I advise him to go and re-take the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), examinations and start afresh in another university.”

9 New Private Universities Approved by Federal Government

The Federal Government during the Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, approved the establishment of nine new private universities for the country.
 
The new private universities includes;
1. Augustine University, Iloran, Lagos State.
2. Chrisland University, Owode, Ogun State.
3. Christopher University, Mowe, Ogun state.
4. Hallmark University Ijebu Itele, Ogun State.
5. Kings University, Odeogun, Osun State.
6. Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, Orode, Delta State.
7. Mountain Top University, Makogi Oba, Ogun State.
8 . Ritman University, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
9. Summit University, Ofah Kwara State.

Minister of Aviation, Mr. Osita Chidoka, announced the new universities at a post-FEC press briefing in Abuja.

University of Ibadan DLC Matriculation Ceremony Date Announced

 
The 2015 matriculation ceremony of the University of Ibadan (UI) Distance Learning Centre has been scheduled to hold on Monday, 2nd March, 2015 while the orientation programme holds on Tuesday, 3rd and Wednesday, 4th March, 2015.

According to the University’s Director of Public Communication, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo, the events will hold in the International Conference Centre of the University as from 9: 00am each day.

Oladejo stated that about 6,000 fresh students admitted to various courses offered by the Centre are expected to matriculate this year.

LAUTECH Updated Academic Calendar for 2014/2015 Session

The authorities of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso on Monday, 23 February, 2015 resumed for the 2014/2015 academic session.

A statement with reference number R/AA/SEN/25 dated February 19, 2015 said fresh students were expected to resume on Monday, 23 February, 2015 and start registration without penalty with immediate effect.

According to the statement, stalites would resume on Monday, 2 March, 2015 and start registration without penalty with immediate effect while lectures for fresh students commence on this day.
The statement said further that stalites would commence lectures on Monday, 9 March, 2015 while registration with penalty for all students begins on Sunday 19 April, 2015.

“Orientation for Fresh Students has been fixed for Friday, 24 April, 2015 and Matriculation Ceremony for Fresh Students holds on Thursday, 31 April, 2015 while registration with penalty for all students ends on Sunday, 10 May, 2015.

Any unregistered student at 12.00 midnight by this date loses his or her studentship for the semester”. The statement said.

The statement added that, Harmattan semester examination begins on Monday, 22 June, 2015.

Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Registration Deadline Announced

Following the resumption of students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, for the first semester 2014/2015 academic session, the Institution’s Management has announced Friday, 27th February, 2015 as deadline for registration for all categories of students.

The 27th February registration deadline affects all newly admitted and returning students. Furthermore, with effect from Friday, 27th February till Saturday, 7th March, 2015, any student, who registers within the period, shall be made to pay a penalty fee of Five Thousand Naira Only (N5,000), after which registration for the session closes.

Meanwhile, the Management, having earlier approved the ratio 60:40% part-payment of school fees for the session, wishes to stress further that there shall be no extension to the deadline of Friday, 27th February, 2015.

Official: FUTO Postgraduate Admission List 2014/15 is Out

The Postgraduate School of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has released the first batch admission list of Postgraduate candidates for the 2014/2015 Academic Session.

How To Check 2014/15 FUTO POSTGRADUATE ADMISSION LIST:

1. Visit the FUTO PG admission portal via pgapply.futo.edu.ng 
2. Click on Check Admission Status tab
3. Enter Email Address/Form Number in the space provided and Click on NEXT button to check your admission status.
INSTRUCTIONS TO ADMITTED CANDIDATES
Short listed candidates should go to any of the collecting banks and pay a non-refundable acceptance fee of Forty Thousand Naira (N40,000.00), excluding bank charges. The collecting banks are as follows:
(a) First Bank Nigeria Plc – Ikenegbu Branch
(b) Diamond Bank Plc – FUTO Branch
(c) EcoBank – Obinze Branch
(d) FUTO Micro-Finance Bank Limited
The detailed procedure is as follows:
STEP 1: Go to any of the collecting banks and pay a non-refundable fee of Forty Thousand Naira (N40,000.00) PG Acceptance fee, excluding bank charges. You will be given an E-Tranzact receipt which should contain a Confirmation pin and Receipt number. (Ensure that you do NOT lose this information!). STEP 2: Visit pgapply.futo.edu.ng and Click on “Check Admission Status” link by the side bar.
STEP 3: Enter your email address or Form number.
STEP 4: Then click “Next”. You can either view your details or continue with your payment
STEP 5: To view your details, kindly click the “View details” link. To make payment, click on “Proceed to Payment”
STEP 6: To continue with your payment, kindly enter your confirmation order and Receipt number on the E-tranzact slip you got from the bank.
STEP 7: Click on “Continue”.
STEP 8: Then click on “Print Acceptance Receipt” to print your receipt.
STEP 9: Print the provisional Admission Letter, and proceed to postgraduate school with your (i) etranzact slip, (ii) acceptance fees receipt and (iii) online provisional admission letter, to collect confirmation of admission.
STEP 10: Thereafter, proceed to the department for clearance. You will be given username and password to FUTO Eduportal. With your username and password you will log on to the portal to generate your school fees invoice which you will use to pay your school fees at any of the collecting banks.

Lecturers in ABSU Begin Work-to-rule Action

The Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Tuesday, began an indefinite work-to-rule action to protest non-remittance of their nine months check off dues by the university management.

ABSU-ASUU chairman, Dr. David Chikezie, explained that the strike was in protest against the insensitive attitude of university authorities over their plight.

He said the lecturers would be reporting to duty but would not teach until their January and February salaries were paid and nine months check-off deduction remitted to the union’s purse.

However, the state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Monica Philips, when contacted, said she was not aware of the work-to-rule by the lecturers because she would have been informed by the Registrar if anything is going on.
