Not a science enthusiast? You first question can be, for what? But real intelligence lies in diversity, it is only expedient for you to know a bit of everything. Much more reasons why this is included in the list of Top 5 books you should read before turning 25 is the great knowledge the book offers in science and the existence of our universe.
Wikipedia describe it as thus A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes is a 1988 popular-science book by British physicist Stephen Hawking. It became a bestseller and sold more than 10 million copies in 20 years. It was also on the London Sunday Times bestseller list for more than four years and was translated into 35 languages by 2001

-Stephen Hawking attempts to explain a range of subjects in cosmology, including the Big Bangblack holes and light cones, to the nonspecialist reader. His main goal is to give an overview of the subject, but he also attempts to explain some complex mathematics. In the 1996 edition of the book and subsequent editions, Hawking discusses the possibility of time travel and wormholes and explores the possibility of having a universe without a quantum singularity at the beginning of time.

Corpers Get CBN Loan Worth N3million Each

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in partnership with Heritage Bank Plc has disbursed a total of N93 million to 310 young entrepreneurs in the country under the Youth Entrepreneurship Development Programme (YEDP) of the apex bank.
The disbursement of funds worth N3 million each to serving and ex-Corps members, was carried out in collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), at a ceremony which took place on Thursday in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, represented by the Deputy Governor (Corporate Services}, Alhaji Sulieman Barau, said that the programme was to ensure that the creative energies of the over 64 million Nigerian youths are harnessed to stimulate growth, address restiveness and promote economic development.

He said that the programme was open to 18 to 35 years-old serving corps members, graduates or artisans.

The Managing Director of Heritage Bank, Mr Ifie Sekibo, urged the CBN to expand the programme to accommodate more qualified youth entrepreneurs.

Quoting from the National Bureau of Statistics, Sekibo, who was represented by the bank’s Executive Director, Corporate Banking, Mrs Mary Akpobome, said there were about 64 million unemployed youths in the country.

Sekibo said the bank currently has over 7,000 business proposals, thus it will require additional funding to cater for the needs of Nigerians.

He added that about N3 billion has been set aside at the initial stage for the programme which is why each participant is getting N3 million each, as the pilot programme is for a thousand people.

In his reaction, the NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Sulaiman Kazaure, thanked the CBN for supporting efforts to empower the youths.

Kazaure noted that the launch of the YEDP would, among other things, create room for increasing the number of beneficiaries of the entrepreneurship training and venture prize competition to make meaningful impact.

The DG urged the beneficiaries of the programme to remain focused and ensure that the loans are paid back to enable other Corps members benefit from the facility.

University Of Lagos Expels 125, Rusticates 198 Students

Authorities of the University of Lagos have expelled 125 students and rusticated 198 others for various offences, including examination malpractices during last academic session.
The lists of the affected students were published on the university’s website on Sunday.

The institution’s Deputy Registrar (Information), Mr Toyin Adebule, confirmed the expulsion and estimation to newsmen in Lagos on Sunday,
Adebule said that the university “will soon publish and display the names and photographs of the students in the media’’.

He said that the action was in line with the university’s zero tolerance on malpractices and other vices in campus.

“Yes we have published some names on our website and these students will be punished in various degrees, depending on the severity.

“Last session, a number of students were caught in various forms of malpractices during their examinations.

“Some were found cheating during the examination with “micro sheets” while others were hired as surrogates to write papers for others.

“Others were caught smoking weeds (Marijuana) right in their halls of residence by their colleagues and reported to the university authorities.

“For those who were caught impersonating, writing examinations for others, they will face outright expulsion,’’ Adebule said.

Adebule said the other categories of students, such as those caught with micro sheets and the smokers, would face suspension ranging from two to four semesters.

“In other to get the desired effect of their various punishments, we are planning to publish all their names as well as display their photographs all over the campus in the next one week.

“We shall carry out this measure in all the departments and faculties in the institution.

“This is to help the university ensure that the affected students will have nowhere to hibernate on campus.

“By doing this, the affected students would know that the university want to ensure total compliance to the sanction and would not want to be seen anywhere around the campus,’’ he said.

Adebule said that before every examination, the university normally make available the rules and regulations for the students to abide by.

He said that such rules and regulations were usually accompanied by various sanctions for defaulters.

According to him, the university will continue to do all it can to sustain set standards and best practices as obtained in other top universities around the world.

Adebule, however, clarified that the development had nothing to do with those involved in the recent students’ riot.

House of Reps to Interfere in NYSC's Quota For Mobilisation

The House of Representatives on Tuesday directed its Committee on Youth Development to look into the reduction of batches of students to be mobilised annually by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), noting that the development would cause hardship for graduated students.

The NYSC had reportedly issued a circular to mobilising tertiary institutions to reduce their quota by 70 per cent. It also noted that two batches would be mobilised annually instead of three.

The House gave the directive following a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Raphael Igbokwe (Imo PDP) who warned that the development might lead to major crises in the tertiary education sector.

nysc1.JPG

The House noted that the 2016 budget made provision for call up of corps members with a shortfall of about 50,000 students.

“Cognisant that the NYSC made request to the presidency for funding of the shortfall which was approved and released through the Ministry of Finance…2016 budget life runs till May 2017,” the lawmaker said.

“This would amount to untold hardship on the part of the graduated students in participating in the NYSC on one hand, and on the other hand, thrown into the excruciating labour marker with no jobs in place,” he added.
